Happy Macro Monday!
The story opens with a poor soldier returning home from war. He meets a witch, who asks him to climb into a hollow tree to retrieve a magic tinderbox. The witch gives the man permission to take anything he finds inside the chambers, but he must return the tinderbox. In the tree, he finds three chambers filled with precious coins guarded by three monstrous dogs, "one with eyes the size of teacups", who guards a vault filled with pennies, one with "eyes the size of water wheels", who guards a vault filled with silver, and one with eyes "the size of Round Tower", who guards a vault filled with gold. He fills his pockets with money, finds the tinderbox, and returns to the witch. When she demands the tinderbox without giving a reason, the soldier lops off her head with his sword.
In the following scene, the soldier enters a large city and buys himself splendid clothing and lives in a magnificent apartment. He makes many friends, He learns of a princess kept in a tower after a prophecy foretold her marriage to a common soldier; his interest is piqued and he wants to see her but realizes his whim cannot be satisfied. Eventually, the soldier's money is depleted and he is forced to live in a dark attic. He strikes the tinderbox to light the room, and one of the dogs appears before him. The soldier then discovers he can summon all three dogs and order them to bring him money from their subterranean dwelling. Again, he lives splendidly.
One night, he recalls the story of the princess in the locked tower, and desires to see her. He strikes the tinderbox and sends the dog with eyes the size of teacups to bring her to his apartment. The soldier is overwhelmed with her beauty, kisses her and orders the dog to return her to the tower. The following morning, the princess tells her parents she has had a strange dream and relates the night's adventure. The royal couple then watch her closely. When the princess is carried away again, they unsuccessfully use a trail of flour and chalk marks on neighborhood doors to find where she spends her nights. Eventually, her whereabouts are discovered and the soldier is clapped in prison and sentenced to death. The tinderbox got left behind, so he cannot summon its help.
On the day of execution, the soldier sends a boy for his tinderbox, and, at the scaffold, asks to have a last smoke. He then strikes the tinderbox and the three monstrous dogs appear. They toss the judge and the councillors, the King and Queen into the air. All are dashed to pieces when they fall to earth. The soldier and the princess are united, and the dogs join the wedding feast.

A Fairytale - A Ballet at the Royal Theatre & an Art Lover give birth to the Symbol of Copenhagen
The sculpture was inspired by ballerina Ellen Price, who in 1909 danced the lead role in the ballet " The Little Mermaid" at the Royal Theatre.
Carl Jacobsen, son of the founder of Carlsberg brewery, was enthralled by both the fairy tale and the performance of Prima Ballerina Ellen Price and commissioned sculptor Edvard Eriksen to create the statue of the mermaid. It was finally unveiled on 23 August 1913 and "She" has been posing for the cameras ever since.
Every morning and evening she swims to the surface from the bottom of the sea and perches on her rock. She stares longingly towards the shore hoping to catch a glimpse of her lost love,a young, handsome prince whom she saved from drowning and fell in love with him ...
There was an expression of ineffable sadness on her face ...
If melancholy had a face,it would be hers ... The sparkling lights at Tivoli Gardens were alluring,I wanted to break loose ...

One of Copenhagen's widest and busiest boulevards, skirting Copenhagen City Hall Square at the corner of which Andersen's larger-than-life bronze statue sits, is named ”H. C. Andersens Boulevard”.
Hans Christian Andersen is one of the world's most popular storytellers, and his fairy tales are among the best-loved works of literature. Among them are Thumbelina, The Little Match Girl, The Princess and the Pea, The Red Shoes, The Wild Swans and his fantasy masterpiece, The Snow-Queen.
Hans Christian Andersen, 2 April 1805 – 4 August 1875, in Denmark usually called H.C. Andersen, was a Danish author. Although a prolific writer of plays, travelogues, novels, and poems, he is best remembered for his fairy tales.
Andersen's fairy tales, consisting of 156 stories across nine volumes[1] and translated into more than 125 languages, have become culturally embedded in the West's collective consciousness, readily accessible to children, but presenting lessons of virtue and resilience in the face of adversity for mature readers as well. His most famous fairy tales include "The Emperor's New Clothes," "The Little Mermaid," "The Nightingale," "The Steadfast Tin Soldier", "The Red Shoes", "The Princess and the Pea," "The Snow Queen," "The Ugly Duckling," "The Little Match Girl," and "Thumbelina." His stories have inspired ballets, plays, and animated and live-action films. ."

Fairytale Perfume Awakening Long-forgotten Childhood Memories at the pier of Langelinje close to Copenhagen Harbour ... Once upon a Time ... a Long Time ago ...
Hans Christian Andersen was sitting there giving life to the bronze statue as he started relating the moving story of "The Little Mermaid" who lived in an Underwater Kingdom with beautiful gardens but she longed to experience the world of human beings ...
Please say no more, dear Christian ... It’s a long sad story,it'll make me cry again, you'll scratch all the etched wounds in my soul.
Can't bear it,enough the sufferings of the world,I had better have fun in Tivoli Gardens ...
Hans Christian Andersen believed that his life was a real fairytale. Many of his cautionary tales became immortal and they immortalised him as they would live happily forever after.
His philosophy and favourite phrase was “To travel is to live”.
He travelled all over Europe where he met many fellow writers, celebrities and royalties. Many of his journeys were financed by public funds. He found the experience of travelling so fascinating that he also wrote a number of travel books.
“To move, to breath, to fly, to float,
To gain all while you give, to roam the roads of lands remote.
To Travel is to Live.” H. C. Andersen
Allured by the sparkling lights in Tivoli Gardens,I left Christian and the Little Mermaid on her rock gazing across the shore looking for her lost love ... There was an expression of ineffable sadness on her face ... If melancholy had a face,it would be hers ...
Paying tribute to Children's Literature & to Childhood Memories & Dreams ...
Determine the moral for yourselves or encapsulate it in a maxim,If you know the plot of the tale ... my Flickr friends ♥

The oldest habour in Copenhagen on a beautiful september afternoon.
Nyhavn was constructed by King Christian V from 1670 to 1675, dug by Swedish prisoners of war from the Dano-Swedish War 1658–1660. It is a gateway from the sea to the old inner city at Kongens Nytorv (King's Square), where ships handled cargo and fishermens' catch. It was notorious for beer, sailors, and prostitution. Danish author Hans Christian Andersen lived at Nyhavn for some 18 years.
The first bridge across Nyhavn opened on 1874. It was a temporary wooden footbridge. It was replaced by the current bridge in 1912.[1]
As ocean-going ships grew larger, Nyhavn was taken over by internal Danish small vessel freight traffic. After World War II land transport took over this role and small vessel traffic disappeared from the Port of Copenhagen, leaving Nyhavn largely deserted of ships.
In the mid-1960s, the Nyhavn Society (Danish: Nyhavnsforeningen) was founded with the aim of revitalising the area. In 1977, Nyhavn was inaugurated as a veteran ship and museum harbour by Copenhagen's Lord Mayor Egon Weidekamp. In 1980 Nyhavn quay was pedestrianised; it had been used as a parking area in the previous years which had coincided with a dwindling of harbour activities.
The northern side of Nyhavn is lined by brightly coloured townhouses built with wood, bricks, and plaster. The oldest house, at No. 9, dates from 1681.
Between 1845 and 1864, Hans Christian Andersen lived at No. 67.

Finally I started working in this ledger. This is a small, 21 x 17 cm, old photo-album which I found in a thrift store.
In this ledger I challenge myself to build a bridge between the skills from the days gone by and my skills.

In August 2023 I got Betty Mouridsen's embroidery pieces and different drawings and patterns. Some of you might remember the embellished nightgown.
Today the focus is on the drawings and patterning. All is tucked away again in a pocket but you can see the drawings in the collage.
The sculpture “The Wild Swans” can be found in Munke Mose,Odense and is made of bronze. The sculpture is a work of Carl Hugo Liisberg and it was unveiled in 1955.
“The Wild Swans” (1838) is inspired by the fairy tale of the same name. The tale is written by Hans Christian Andersen and is about perseverance, courage and sacrifice.
"Go out into the world and get your own living," said the queen. "Fly like great birds, who have no voice." But she could not make them ugly as she wished, for they were turned into eleven beautiful wild swans. Then, with a strange cry, they flew through the windows of the palace, over the park, to the forest beyond.

….”I am ready,” said the emperor. “Does not my suit fit me marvellously?” Then he turned once more to the looking-glass, that people should think he admired his garments.
The chamberlains, who were to carry the train, stretched their hands to the ground as if they lifted up a train, and pretended to hold something in their hands; they did not like people to know that they could not see anything.
The emperor marched in the procession under the beautiful canopy, and all who saw him in the street and out of the windows exclaimed: “Indeed, the emperor’s new suit is incomparable! What a long train he has! How well it fits him!” Nobody wished to let others know he saw nothing, for then he would have been unfit for his office or too stupid. Never emperor’s clothes were more admired.
“But he has nothing on at all,” said a little child at last. “Good heavens! listen to the voice of an innocent child,” said the father, and one whispered to the other what the child had said. “But he has nothing on at all,” cried at last the whole people. That made a deep impression upon the emperor, for it seemed to him that they were right; but he thought to himself, “Now I must bear up to the end.” And the chamberlains walked with still greater dignity, as if they carried the train which did not exist.
