Prevalence of prediabetes in US youth and young adults 2005-2016 by Race/Ethnicity.
“The American Diabetes Association has defined prediabetes as the presence of impaired fasting glucose (IFG; fasting plasma glucose [FPG] concentration between 100 mg/dL to <126 mg/dL; to convert to millimoles per liter, multiply by 0.0555), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT; a 2-hour plasma glucose [2hrPG] concentration after a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test of 140 mg/dL to 199 mg/dL), or glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels between 5.7% and 6.4% (to convert to proportion of total hemoglobin, multiply by 0.01).”

“Prevalence of metabolic health in American adults is alarmingly low, even in normal weight individuals.”
In the US population as a whole, 12.2% are in optimal metabolic health (approx 27.3 million American adults).
These numbers are even smaller in an employed population (greater than age 20 years), and are small even in individuals who are normal weight.
It must therefore be assumed in employed settings that the overwhelming majority of people are metabolically unhealthy.
Definition of metabolic health:
Waist circumference < 102 (men) / 88 (women) cm
Blood pressure < 120/80
Blood glucose < 100 mg/dl
HbA1c < 5.7 %
TG = 40 (men) / 50 (women) mg/dl
No meds for glucose, BP, cholesterol

Hungary to punish diabetics if they don't stick to diet
AFP - Hungarian diabetics who fail to stick to their diet will be deprived of more modern treatments from July, under a government decree published Monday aimed at cutting health spending.
Diabetics undergo a blood test on average every three months and those who score high levels of glycemia more than twice a year could be turned away from treatments with analog insulin -- more efficient but also more expensive -- and left with the less efficient human insulin, under the new rules.
Currently, all diabetes treatments are subsidised by the state, which hopes to reduce health spending with the new rules.
The decree does not however apply to children under 18 and those in a life-threatening condition.

In Hungary, Punishing Diabetes Patients with Poor HbA1cs to Save Money
by ELIZABETH SNOUFFER on 04/24/2012
Disturbing news from Hungary yesterday as the Hungarian government has decreed the punishment of diabetes patients who do not meet the European medical standard for HbA1c or satisfactory blood glucose control by denying modern treatment. Currently, an HbA1c less than 6.5% is the recommended European standard. It’s unclear what types of goals will determine the penalization. Read France/24s original article here.
Starting in July 2012, Hungarian patients who fail to live up to their doctor’s recommended HbA1c test twice in one year might be limited to using human insulin and less of it, instead of the more modern analog insulin such as Lantus, Levemir, Novolog or Humalog. The Hungarian government subsidizes healthcare under a national system.
The new decree does not apply to children under 18 or those with a “life-threatening condition.” Diabetes medicines for the Eastern European country ‘s 500,000 patients currently cost the National Healthcare system over 100 million euros per year.
The decree also stated:
“Taxpayers’ money should not be spent on patients who don’t cooperate with their doctor.”
This Orwellian mandate reminds me of the year 2006 when Mayor Bloomberg tried to enforce a similar kind of decree when he suggested all New York City doctors should report substandard HbA1c records for patient cases (with citizen’s names) directly to the NYC Health Department. His approach was rejected as it was and still would be a violation of patient confidentiality and even a violation of the US Constitution.
It wouldn’t be surprising, given the current economic environment and status of US healthcare reform, if US insurance providers decided diabetes patients with chronic poor HbA1c results were not deserving of special diabetes medicines or tools, including more efficacious insulin. I guess the BIG question is how this can possibly be thought of as a motivational tool for patients to change behaviors? Fed up with non-compliant patients, is Hungary wanting to help push their citizens with uncontrolled diabetes off the proverbial diabetes plank more quickly? Ironically, in this case, Hungary may want to rethink their new decree when thousands of diabetes patients – without proper care – cost the system much more when diabetes becomes expensively life-threatening, instead of just chronic.
The diabetes political roulette game is a wicked wheel.
An HbA1c blood test measures your average blood sugar (glucose) levels over the past two to three months. It is used to diagnose, monitor, and manage diabetes, and does not require any special preparation. The test involves a simple blood draw from a vein in your arm, with results typically available within a few days to a week.

When it comes to drinking coffee, its various health benefits are often overlooked. After all, it is a delicious beverage, that gives you a boost to start your morning off the right way, isn’t that enough? It sure is a great way to begin your day, but what if you discovered that coffee can help reduce your risk for type 2 diabetes? Surely, it would become a daily inclusion in your beverage consumption, right? Let’s take a look at how coffee can help possibly prevent type 2 diabetes development.
Type 2 diabetes is at epidemic levels in the United States because of high carb diets filled with processed foods and unhealthy sugars filled with junk. This has caused staggering obesity rates, with 1/3 of US adults being obese.
How Can Coffee Prevent Type 2 Diabetes?
Coffee may reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes in several different ways. What is paradoxically strange, however, is the fact that coffee may temporarily raise your blood sugar levels, even though overall it reduces diabetes risk factors.
One explanation for this strange phenomenon is the fact that caffeine raises adrenaline levels, which among other effects leads to increased blood sugar levels. Regardless, there are likely reasons why coffee may reduce diabetes risk.
Coffee Raises Adiponectin
Adiponectin is a protein found in the blood that helps to signal and regulate our blood sugar when levels are high and act to regulate it. However, in diabetic individuals, adiponectin levels are lower than normal, resulting in higher blood sugar values.
However, there is a positive to this, as findings published in the Journal of clinical and diagnostic research (Bhakta et al.) found that people who consumed coffee had higher levels of adiponectin, as well as lower fasting blood sugar values and HbA1c, a protein indicative of blood sugar control over a long period of time.
Coffee Can Help Preserve Liver Function And Prevent Fatty Liver Disease
Fatty liver is usually associated with alcoholics, but can also occur in overweight individuals without a history of alcohol abuse. Fatty liver disease is associated with an increased propensity for insulin resistance and the onset of type 2 diabetes.
Combined with the fact that coffee can help speed up metabolism and fat utilization for fuel and energy, fatty liver can be easily overcome with some effort!
Coffee Increases SHBG
Although the immediate relationship between diabetes and SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin) may not be readily apparent, it is interesting to know that insulin and SHBG have an inverse relationship. What this means is that when one increases, the other will decrease. Since coffee increases SHBG, it is able to bring insulin levels down. While this news is hopeful, the one issue that has been discovered is this is not predictable in all populations since this occurs mostly in post-menopausal women, and not in any statistically significant segment of male subjects.
Decaffeinated Coffee Is An Attractive Alternative
As outlined, the caffeine content found in coffee can cause spikes in blood glucose levels, although it does not occur in everyone. However, if you are particularly sensitive, it may be a better option to consume decaffeinated varieties, as these contain little to no caffeine and would not result in the undesirable surge in blood sugar levels. Yet, many of the benefits of reducing type 2 diabetes risk still exist.
Conclusion
A review of studies conducted between the periods of 2001-2011 and published in Current Diabetes Review-Journal, which encompassed 13 studies. The conclusions drawn across the board were that coffee drinkers had a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The amount of coffee one needs to drink in order to observe measurable benefit was shown to be a minimum of 4 cups per day, while those that consumed 2 or less daily did not observe significant benefits.
The results are clear- regular coffee consumption is good for reducing your risk of type 2 diabetes.

Üç aylık şeker kavramını duymayan şeker hastası yok gibidir. Peki, bu kavramla anlatılmak istenen nedir ? Şekerin son üç aylık seyrinin ortalaması mıdır? Hayır, cevap o kadar basit değil.
HbA1c

I bought a FitBit. I've not bought one before because I really don't do enough exercise to justify it. But now I have bought one because I don't do enough exercise.
Last week, a doctor at my medical centre suggested that I may have had a heart attack. I hadn't. I'd had a reaction to some antibiotics. My heart is fine. She also says I am 'pre diabetic' and need make dietary changes (what, more?) and to exercise more. I checked the levels on my lab reports. I am only just in the 'pre-diabetic' (more accurately, at risk if I don't do something about it). The HbA1c level to be fine is 41 mmol/mol or lower. Mine is 42.
So now I'm making sure I get my steps in and I walk down all the stairs at work at least once a day. I made sure I got a model which measures my heart rate.

Community Ambulance
It was an early start for me this morning as I had an appointment at the local hospital. I don't qualify to be collected and dropped off by this community ambulance, although it seems lots of people do as they all piled out as I arrived. My appointment was for my 6 monthly Diabetes check up, which had somehow slid to 8 months this time around! The good news is my hba1c (blood glucose) results are the best they have been in - forever. The bad news is my blood tests show I have an infection brewing... So more blood tests this morning and now I've got to try and get an appointment with my GP to get some antibiotics... Wish me luck!

Blood Sugar Support offers high-quality herbs, minerals and vitamins to help you support your blood sugar levels within the healthy normal range. It also provides a range of botanical extracts such as guggul and banaba leaf. The included ingredients have been chosen specifically for their support potential. Also it provides trace minerals such as chromium, manganese and vanadium.
Blood Sugar improves the glucose homeostasis system. Biotin, a B-vitamin, plays an integral role to support the balance of glucose in your system. The chromium works synergistically with biotin, and several studies have suggested this combination is beneficial.
Banaba (Lagerstroemia speciosa L.) has been used traditionally for many years in Southeast Asia. Its support is thought to be because of the naturally present corosolic acid and ellagitannins. There is growing evidence for the nourishing properties of Banaba leaf for the glucose homeostasis system.
Guggul is a type of tree sap that has been used in India for thousands of years. Preclinical studies have shown that guggul can support blood sugar levels already within the normal range.
Bitter melon is a popular vegetable in Asia and Africa. It has been shown in a randomized, placebo-controlled, single-blinded clinical trial to support blood sugar levels within the normal range.
In trials, cinnamon has been linked to support of healthy levels of HbA1c in the blood, as well as support for healthy, normal-range blood sugar levels after meals (postprandial glucose). Most trials have used a much higher dose of cinnamon, but the coumarin in cinnamon means high doses are inadvisable.
HbA1c is a kind of blood protein that is stuck to a sugar molecule, and higher levels of HbA1c are associated with higher blood sugar. Some of the ingredients can support healthy HbA1c levels.
Supplementing with Gymnema sylvestre has been associated with support for both after-meal and fasting blood sugar levels.
Vanadium, a trace metal probably best known for its engineering applications, is yet another nutritional supplement for the support of blood sugar levels within the normal range..
This is my last HBA1c .
I'm quite pleased with it.
I went down by 0.5% since the last one done 3 months ago.
And yes I eat cakes and macaroons.
They are allowed thanks to the new treatments available now.

I think the word 'yay!' accurately sums up my sentiments toward that percentage. :) My cholesterol levels are fine, and my weight is down 17.6lbs. In two months! My next big challenge is managing my diabetes with a job which requires rather irregular working hours and some degree of office work. I'll take my battles as they come and rejoice in little victories like these, then. :)

La vida es bella. 6.0% de A1c post vacaciones está muy bien. Sobre todo considerando las circunstancias pues los últimos 45 días fueron de paseo por Europa, Roma y sus pastas incluidas ;)
Predictable and unpredictable.
Unpredictable
After 8175 pictures, my Canon Powershot A95 is done. It had some nice features (the LCD screen was on a hinge to protect it from scratches when not in use), but it was definitely past it's prime.
See that fuzzy spot under 'glo', that thing drives me nuts and would not go away despite the best cleaning. And the LCD display was starting to act up and have static. Videos were filled with static too.
R.I.P. A95
Predictable
Same A1c two draws in a row. Meaning about 6 months at 5.8!
