We found this witch hazel aka hamamelis coming into flower in the winter garden at Sir Harold Hillier Gardens.

Its strange flowers with small centres and long stringy petals always fascinate me. When full out, their scent is pervasive.

This variety: hamamelis intermedia robert

Even in winter you can recognize the hazel from a thousand. Its 'catkins' gracefully dangle from its branches, waiting for fertilization by the wind. Both male and female catkins appear on one multi-stemmed plant, but this winter bloomer still fails to 'pair' with itself.

Monoecious: This is what plants are called that are both male and female. To ensure strong offspring, they must invent a strategy that prevents them from self-pollinating. That is why the hazel already starts producing male 'catkins' or flowers in autumn. Only when they have finished flowering do smaller female catkins appear on the scene Because they do not flower at the same time, the pollen from the green 'hazelcats' cannot end up on the red 'hazelcats' of the same plant.

Hellebores grow in profusion in our garden near to the hazel trees bordering the stream. Because they hang their heads, it's impossible to photograph them in situ.

I sometimes take a few indoors to float them face upwards in a shallow dish of water. I discovered the pale pink speckled one this year.

Hazel is Romeo's big sister.

HAZEL:

Shall we play together with Lego Romeo?

ROMEO:

Da...da....Daddd...Dadddy...Daddy

HAZEL:

Daddy is Dadsie and Mummy is Mumsy.

ROMEO: (cries)

Dad..da...Daddy!!!

HAZEL:

Dadsie....not Daddy

ROMEO: (cries louder)

Dadddddyyyyyy!!!!!

HAZEL:

Which Daddy do you mean Romeo?

I never met that Daddy

ROMEO:

HAZEL: (sigh)

Is there a Daddy who knows Romeo??

I'd like to meet him

Hazel, an eight week old 'Flat Coated Retriever' pup, a new addition to our family. Becky my twelve year old 'Cocker Spaniel' is not at all impressed.

the last days of a purple double tulip

I wondered why Ray had planted yellow crocuses in straight lines in the lawn.

It transpired he had planted the initials H in yellow and R in purple crocuses. The birds are eating the yellow and the purple are late blooming.

A romantic gesture!

Hazel is wind-pollinated and not reliant on insects so most of the pollen produced is blown away and doesn’t find it’s target. The target for the pollen is the female flower.

The Hazel tree is monoecious, meaning that each tree has both male and female flowers.

Hazel catkins (male flowers) are an inflorescence of small flowers that form in the autumn and are with us all winter, they can begin to open in January if the weather is mild. Each catkin is a flower head, comprised of about 240 small flowers. Each flower is covered by a triangular downy bract, beneath the bract are four stamens and each stamen has two yellow anthers (the pollen producing male part of a flower).A single anther will produce around nine thousand grains of pollen and one catkin, nearly nine million. A Hazel tree produces a lot of pollen.

The female flowers grow in clusters from small buds above the catkins. Only the red petals of the flowers protrude from the buds and the female inflorescence typically measures 2-4 mm across, It is a very small flower. Each female flower has two red styles (The pollen receiving female part of a flower). Each bud contains a cluster of between four and fourteen female flowers.

Once pollinated the female flowers produce the fruit, hazel nuts in July.

How much hazelnuts I will collect in July depends on who is faster, the squirrels or me 😊

Hazel is growing up fast. She was six months old on the 24th Decemeber. Here she is posing for me on New Year's Eve. Her great talent is weedling her way into your heart.

Not too many flowers blooming in the garden now. These Japanese anemones are all cut down and it feels really like autumn.

He often passes through our back garden en route from somewhere to somewhere.

This morning, when he came, I was already out with my camera among the flowers. So we had a little photoshoot.

He sat, investigated, preened, looked at me, looked away - and was then off somewhere.

This is my favourite shot.

A shot from the only frosty day this year when I went for an early morning walk. I always love the subtle colours of hazel leaves, and a. very light frost shows them off perfectly. Falling slowly is a. beautiful duet by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, a. bit of calm after my recent excitements.

It's early bloomer time again, joy and sorrow of an allergy sufferer like me...

Corylus avellana, the common hazel, is a species of flowering plant in the birch family Betulaceae. It is native to Europe and western Asia. It is an important component of the hedgerows that were the traditional field boundaries in lowland England. The wood was traditionally grown as coppice, the poles cut being used for wattle-and-daub building and agricultural fencing.

Common hazel is cultivated for its nuts. The name hazelnut applies to the nuts of any species in the genus Corylus, but in commercial settings a hazelnut is usually that of C. avellana. This hazelnut or cob nut, the kernel of the seed, is edible and used raw or roasted, or ground into a paste. The cob is round, compared with the longer filbert nut. (Wikipedia) Montenaken, Belgium.
