Hawthorn (Crataegus) is a genus of the rose family (Rosaceae). The genus is also known as hawthorn or stone thorn. They are shrubs that occur naturally in Europe, North America, Asia and North Africa. Some species also occur as trees. Because of the thorns on the branches, the hawthorn was often used in hedges as a partition for cattle. The wood is hard and fine in structure.
Lichen covers a flower budding twig. It does no harm. Lichen are a symbiotic combination of fungus and algae/cyanobacteria.
