I brought in the New Year by watching The Hateful Eight in glorious 70mm at the Hollywood theater in Portland.

I was lucky to quickly grab this half decent pano as the stage lights went on right before the film started as the manager briefly went on stage talking about Quentin Tarrantino's visit.

YES! Quentin Tarrantino himself was standing on that very stage the night before, in a surprise appearance at Hollywood theater promoting his film Hateful Eight as part of his 70mm roadshow promotion.

The format was tremendous. I had never seen a film projected in 70mm before and I was blown away. This presentation had an opening overture and a unique retro version of the Weinstein logo that was a complete homage to the unique MGM logo in 2001 Space Odyssey. There was even an intermission. It was a phenomenal screening.

And not only is this the one single theater in the state that has a 70mm projector but it is in fact the largest 70mm projected screen in the entire nation. Quentin Tarrantino himself even told the crowd that he was so impressed by the theater that he wished everyone could see his new film at our Hollywood theater. True story.

So I was honored to watch my first 70mm film at this amazing Portland theater.

FUN FACT: the young girl towards the back with the red hat was actually knitting as she waited for the film to start. So yeah, a girl knitting during the Hateful Eight. As Portland as Portland gets.

We got to see Hateful Eight today! It screened at NorthPark AMC in 70mm. REAL LIFE 70mm! As I understand it, this was the first film to be shot in 60mm since the â60s, and they used the same lenses that shot Ben Hur. Itâs a pretty cool deal. They had these programs on a table as we walked into the theater, they played an Overture before the film started, and there was a 15 minute Intermission about two hours into the flick. The whole experience was about three hours long, and it was a blast!

Chase Whale was in the same movie as us too. I hadnât seen that dude in ages, and I guess we technically still didnât talk to him. Emily saw that heâd posted a pic of the theater on Instagram and asked if he was there too. We ended up chatting with him via text after the movie. Now we might be having lunch sometime soon. Itâll be cool to reconnect with that dude. Feels like I never quite got to know him as well as I was supposed to.

After the movie we met up with Amanda in Fort Worth, just as she was getting off work at Stir Crazy. Emily and I ate some sweets and then walked with Amanda to Spice down the street for dinner. It was really fun! Solid day.
