Another one from spring series .
Dahlia is a genus of bushy, tuberous, perennial plants native to Mexico, Central America, and Colombia. There are at least 36 species of Dahlia. Dahlia hybrids are commonly grown as garden plants. The Aztecs gathered and cultivated the dahlia for food, ceremony, as well as decorative purposes,[1] and the long woody stem of one variety was used for small pipes.
1872 a box of Dahlia roots were sent from Mexico to the Netherlands. Only one plant survived the trip, but produced spectacular red flowers with pointed petals. Nurserymen in Europe bred from this plant, which was named Dahlia juarezii with parents of Dahlias discovered earlier and these are the progenitors of all modern Dahlia hybrids. Ever since, plant breeders have been breeding Dahlias to produce thousands of cultivars, usually chosen for their stunning and brightly coloured flowers. Dahlia plants range in height from as low as 12" (30 cm) to as tall as 6-8 feet (180-240 cm). The flowers can be as small as 2" (5 cm) in diameter or up to a foot (30 cm) "dinner plate". The great variety results from Dahlias being octoploids (they have eight sets of homologous chromosomes, whereas most plants have only two).
Dahlias are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including Angle Shades, Common Swift, Ghost Moth and Large Yellow Underwing.
The dahlia is named after Swedish 18th-century botanist Anders Dahl [2]. In Germany they were known as georgines until recently. They were named by the botanist Carl Ludwig Willdenow after the naturalist Johann Gottlieb Georgi of St. Petersburg, Russia.
India comprises of an estimated 1 million nomads who still continue to live their traditional art, craft and hereditary avocations. Most nomad groups face social discrimination and marginalization as society evolved into land / pastoral farming and urbanization and the other mainstream populations practiced it with great success.
This group of nomads were at the tail end of a larger group moving on a desultory grey day in Haryana borderig New Delhi even as cars whizzed by on the tarmac.
These are peripatetic nomads that provide service and are artisans in general. These appear to be Banjara/Lambadi/Goduliya Lohars travelling with cots and cattle.

The nomads continue to exist and survive in India with their flocks of sheep and goats, walking vast distances everyday braving the sun, dust and the contempt of the motorists all over the country.
New roads have sprung up in place of the old ancient trails and pathways. Blocks of concrete encased in shiny glass and steel flank the roads. Electric poles and pylons carrying power lines criss cross the horizon. it is an ugly sight and an uglier situation. It is an urban ghetto caught in the middle of a development phase that is totally unfavorable to the old ways.
Haryana compared to other places is perhaps the worst offender for polluting the skyline with uglyness beyond compare.
Nomads such as these will continue to survive and exist raising up a cloud of dust in the dry scrubby roadsides and fields of India while the world motors on.

Also known as Slavonian Grebe ( Podiceps auritus) this migratory bird is not a common visitor to India. Last Winter a handful of them were spotted in the village pond in Dighal, Haryana. Two of they stayed for nearly a month.
