My new experiment - a hybrid #harshbeautifulheadshot of the brilliant Charlotte Mooney @charlottemooneystoryteller - co-artistic-director of Ockham’s Razor @ockhamsrazoruk. One of the most inspiring circus arts companies in the UK, currently devising a new interpretation of Tess of the d’Urbervilles - can’t wait to see it. Charlotte is a regular director and teacher at the National Centre for Circus Arts @nationalcircus.
This was achieved with:
3 medium sized beauty dishes gridded - 1 above camera and 1 oblique each side.
1 very large beauty dish gridded - positioned high behind the sitter to catch their silhouette.
Wireless trigger on camera.
My official Harshbeautiful portrait of hugely talented designer, art director, artist and friend @keithslote. I couldn’t resist this impish shot!

Brilliant to finally reconnect with the handsome funny fabulously brainy Vic Roberts on a recent return to London from North Carolina USA. Vic was one of the first women mechanics to work for London Transport (she’s in the Transport Museum!) and one of the few women bus drivers too. She also worked at The Scala Cinema in the 1980s - which was my second home!

My #psychedelicportrait of very handsome and extremely beautiful actor Gareth Kennerley. IG: @garethkennerley and @gklifemodel
T: @garethkennerley
He is currently in rehearsal for Othello at the National Theatre, London, opening in November.
Get in touch if you need an acting coach or life model, he’s brilliant.
It’s so exciting to be developing this new #psychedelicportrait series - expressive faces blasted with colour. And yes, all of the colours are pretty much as they came out of the camera!
My #harshbeautiful portrait of brilliantly talented artist, actor and director Ivan Cartwright who I first saw in the 1980s when he appeared in Neil Bartlett’s haunting Vision of Love Revealed in Sleep, then with alt-drag company Bloolips. He is long-standing compere of Prince Charles Cinema’s Singalonga Sound of Music (and many other musicals)!
My #harshbeautiful portrait of Emmy-winning Canadian war correspondent and foreign correspondent Jeff Kofman, trying to capture his granite-like strength presence! Fascinating hearing about his time as correspondent for CBS News, Anchor for CBC TV, and Middle East War Correspondent for ABC News covering Iraq and Libya.
After reporting on the declining morale of U.S. troops in the region he was the target of a fierce homophobic smear campaign from the Bush White House.
Jeff was also familiar to me as a regular global affairs commentator speaking wise words on BBC’s Dateline London.
My new #psychedelicportrait of wonderful friend David Marquardt, on a recent visit to London from the USA. Check out his beautiful intriguing artwork on IG: @davren7

My #harshbeautiful portrait of delightful choreographer & director Stephen Mear CBE @stephen.mear. Stephen normally has a brilliant beamish smile etched on his face but I grabbed a more moody shot for this series!!
Stephen received two @olivierawards and a @thetonyawards nomination for @marypoppinsmusical (with Sir Matthew Bourne @matthewbourne13), an Olivier for Hello Dolly, and a whole raft of Olivier nominations for the likes of Gypsy, Kiss Me Kate, Crazy For You, Sweet Charity, Sinatra, Singing in the Rain, and Soul Train!!
Stephen’s choreography for the Mary Poppins song #Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious is based on #britishsignlanguage, inspired by his partner choreographer and director Mark Smith who is deaf. @marksmithchoreographer @deafmendancing

My #harshbeautiful portrait of wonderfully passionate humanitarian and philanthropy leader Dr Balwant Singh celebrating his sixtieth!
SO EXCITED to introduce my new #psychedelicportrait series - celebrating expressive faces blasted with joyous colour. A major change of mood compared with my #harshbeautiful series.
HUGE thanks to handsome Jérôme Donny (A USA Listing Rules Consultant) for getting into the spirit of the shoot, and for being so patient with me while I wrestled with the tech. Must admit I’m thrilled with the results.
And yes, all of the colours are exactly as they came out of the camera!
My #harshbeautiful portrait of wonderful, handsome, inspiring @davidahbtaylor - art historian, curator and writer- from a brilliant shoot last month. So good to be back in the studio full-tilt now that restrictions are lifting.

From a wonderful #Harshbeautiful shoot with remarkable Jamie Manton - currently directing the Old Vic/Broadway production of A Christmas Carol in San Francisco. I normally only share one definitive version of a portrait, but I’m really drawn to these alternative colour #harshbeautifulheadshots of the brilliant Charlotte Mooney and Alex Harvey - co-artistic-directors of @ockhamsrazoruk. One of the most inventive circus arts companies in the UK, closely involved with the National Centre for Circus Arts @nationalcircus where I’ve attend classes for over 20 years.

Wonderful #harshbeautiful portrait shoot and profound conversation with Emma Dixon - ultra-brainy barrister specialising in public law, human rights, and environmental law. Extraordinary courageous vulnerability in front of the camera produced great shots.

Another beautiful catch up with my phenomenal opera director friend John Cox. This time we revisited his #harshbeautiful portrait from our shoot 10 years ago. His groundbreaking productions of The Magic Flute and The Rake’s Progress with sets by David Hockney continue to be performed half a century since they were first created. (The Rake’s Progress returns to Glyndebourne in August.)
My #harshbeautiful portrait of utterly wonderful Nicholas Roberts @nickrobertsplanning, Senior Producer at the ENO. This is a big change from my usual “rule” that the sitter shouldn’t be smiling, cause I always associate Nick with a huge beamish smile!

My official #harshbeautiful portrait of dazzling and delightfully easygoing orchestra conductor @davidcharlesabell www.davidcharlesabell.com - on a flying visit to London with his husband, producer Seann Alderking, to record music from classic 20th-Century Fox movies with the BBC Concert Orchestra.
This portrait of David is intended to sit alongside Seann’s portrait, shot 2 years ago, which features in my Harshbeautiful book. jamesmbarrett.com/limited-edition-book/
Utterly brilliant Harshbeautiful shoot with amazing Gareth Valentine - composer, arranger, conductor and musical director - who has been involved with every West End musical I’ve ever seen. The Requiem he composed is breathtakingly beautiful and highly recommended! I really wanted to capture his piercing eyes, flash a bit of his phenomenal tattoos, and convey his wicked impish sense of humour.
My #harshbeautiful portrait of wonderful Marian Ilie. It was an amazing shoot with so many beautiful expressions it was tough to pick out a final choice. Fascinating conversation about the UK and growing up in Romania.

David Reid 2020 - responsible for groundbreaking HIV related work) - who originally sat for me in 2011 as one of the earliest portraits in this series.

My new #harshbeautiful portrait of Stuart Lorimer - psychiatrist specialising in gender identity. He and husband David Gray were the very first to commission their portraits almost a decade ago now. This new double portrait marks a special anniversary!
Brilliant #harshbeautiful portrait shoot with delightful artist and architect Karl Renner. I really hope this captures his quizzical, cheeky, thoughtful, quirky expression!! Thanks so much to Paul Prentiss for making this happen.

Finally I got to meet this delightful man in person!! My official #harshbeautiful portrait of John Mercer, Professor of Gender and Sexuality at Birmingham City University. John wrote a beautiful essay for my Harshbeautiful book, about my “practice of care” in the way I relate to my sitters. John has published profoundly important books about objectification, and about gay pornography. Highly recommended.
