The social harm I am documenting is drinking.
The effects of this social harm are not only felt in this particular area but it is a worldwide thing. Alcohol abuse is very serious and dangerous. This area in particular does not have a history, but alcohol does have a history. In the United States during the 1920's the government made alcohol illegal because they believed that it would improve the society. in today's society, alcohol is much more accessible and it has been socially accepted. It is now used in social interactions or as leisure activity.
UNCEDED COAST SALISH TERRITORIES: On Tuesday May 7, a dozen people from the Social Housing Coalition BC went to Vancouver Island for a day of action for social housing.
The group joined and supported a larger rally against poverty held at the Ministry of Social Development office in downtown Victoria and had speakers and held banners with the group. Also in Victoria we met with the Society of Living Injection Drug Users (SOLID) and Transform Homelessness Advocacy Watch (THAW), both low-income member driven groups.
Our group then left the rest of the anti-poverty demonstrators behind and travelled up-island for stands for social housing in Duncan and Nanaimo.
In every community we visited we saw the housing crisis standing out with as much urgency and need as any other place we know.
