Hello!! You were really surprised, weren’t you, when you saw me sitting on your dock in the harbor! You were so curious and stood up tall in the water to get a better look. It’s so terribly cute how you do that – I just had to start giggling! And don’t think I don’t catch you peeking sometimes when Blanca and I are walking on the beach. You follow us along and like to keep a watchful eye on us.
Your round head is just the same size as a human’s. In fact, it can be hard to tell the difference between swimmers and seals. That’s why I think you’re the real mermaid of the ocean!
You have so many different spots all over, just like Blanca. When you lie on the sand or on the dock and the sun comes out, you glisten like gold – it is so beautiful! I never know where or when you're going to pop up out of the water, but when you do, it makes me happy and I love you!
Be my watery curious cousin!
Claudia
Another shot of the sweet little seal pup.
I've since been back to the same spot, just for my own peace of mind, to ascertain that the baby is no longer there, alive or otherwise ... and it wasn't there, so presumably all is well.

Tip: If you want to get this close you have to take the boat tour called "Zu den Seehundsbänken".

A Harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) resting on the rocks at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve south of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. We went down to the park yesterday with our neighbors. The wether was really cloudy but I managed to get a few good images.
Isn't this cutie adorable? A young harbor seal watching us very curious.

This heartmelting Harbor Seal Baby looks like it's changing its fur from baby fur to adult fur, and for some reason it started in the face. So this cutie reminds a bit on a mix of seal and racoon. I'm not sure if I've ever seen a cuter animal than this... 😁

There had to be a dozen or more of these Harbor Seal's.They were the last thing we shot for the day at Sandy Hook NJ.
I took my granddaughter out for the first time exploring tide pools. How lucky to come across about 60 Pacific Harbor Seals resting on the exposed rock shelves of a low tide. We kept our distance, respectful of their space, but each and every one of them was very aware of our presence.
Baby Harbor Seal.. Unforgettable! 😍

Heavy marine layer gave a green-grey tint to everything... sky, water, sand... perfectly matching the coloration of this Harbor Seal who seemed to be following me down the beach. Imagination, I know, but when you have the name Selkii...
I found this little harbour seal on the beach and monitored him. He was dehydrated and weak with no sign of mom. Some other people told me they saw him there for 48 hours so I called Marine Mammal Rescue and they came out to rescue him. Hope this little one recovers soon and gets fat and healthy so he can get released back into the ocean. The marine mammal rescue have updated me his new name is Floyd he has a small infection in his umbilicus, and is dehydrated and weak but hopefully will be on the mend and released back asap!
A little rescue seal.
Everybody a happy new year - may it become better than the last!

A Harbor Seal with a nice Striped Bass while the fisherman are not catching anything at Island Beach State Park, NJ.
This new sandbank has appeared lately at low tide and the resident harbor seals are taking full advantage of it for communal snooze time.
Harbor seal at Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon in southeastern Iceland. The glacier lagoon is impossibly gorgeous, but this friendly guy definitively stole the show. Just chilling on an iceberg, looking at us with complete indifference!
This seemingly friendly Sea Lion, popped up to say hello. He/she was truly interested and/or inquisitive to inspect the likes of me with camera in hand, and 'my little dog too'.
Judging by her mates size, who at the time, was sunning on the dock..... it might be a pretty fair assessment to guess their individual weights at approx. 350-400 lbs!

Sea lions are pinnipeds characterized by external ear flaps, long foreflippers, the ability to walk on all fours, short, thick hair, and a big chest and belly. Together with the fur seals, they make up the family Otariidae, eared seals. The sea lions have six extant and one extinct species (the Japanese sea lion) in five genera. Their range extends from the subarctic to tropical waters of the global ocean in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, with the notable exception of the northern Atlantic Ocean.[1] They have an average lifespan of 20–30 years. A male California sea lion weighs on average about 300 kg (660 lb) and is about 2.4 m (8 ft) long, while the female sea lion weighs 100 kg (220 lb) and is 1.8 m (6 ft) long. The largest sea lion is Steller's sea lion, which can weigh 1,000 kg (2,200 lb) and grow to a length of 3.0 m (10 ft). Sea lions consume large quantities of food at a time and are known to eat about 5–8% of their body weight (about 6.8–15.9 kg (15–35 lb)) at a single feeding. Sea lions can move around 16 knots (30 km/h; 18 mph) in water and at their fastest they can reach a speed of about 30 knots (56 km/h; 35 mph). Three species, the Australian sea lion, the Galápagos sea lion and the New Zealand sea lion, are listed as endangered

Fun way to end the day. There most have been at least a half dozen of these guys out playing around in the bay.
Some of the Local Harbor Seals at The Children's Pool, La Jolla.
These were on the unprotected side of the seawall. With temperatures at home at about 105 Degrees, I was tempted to join them.
Two sleeping seals on the beach. What a wonderful view at the north sea coast. I enjoyed this day with the seals so much..
We were always at least on a 30 meters distance to not stress them. They are used to the strange humans that wallk on that beach and watch them. So it is a real peaceful mood on that place. Unforgettable.

This particular gravel bar appeared recently in the Rogue River, and it was the first time I saw a group of seals using it as a haul-out. It allowed Blanca to get a pretty close view (and sniff) of them! The main channel of the river is on the far side of the gravel bar.
This is Shell Island as seen from the Simpson Reef Overlook in Cape Arago State Park. There are hundreds of California sea lions, Steller sea lions, harbor seals and occasional northern elephant seals (scientifically known as pinnipeds) lounging and mingling all together ... it is totally amazing to see!!! Definitely click on the picture to view in large!
