When I was 5 years old
My mother always told me that
Happiness was the key of life...
When I went to school
they asked me what I wanted to be
When I grew up
I wrote down Happy
They told me I didn't Understand
The Assigment and I told them
They didn't understand
...
So early it’s still almost dark out.
I’m near the window with coffee,
and the usual early morning stuff
that passes for thought.
When I see the boy and his friend
walking up the road
to deliver the newspaper.
They wear caps and sweaters,
and one boy has a bag over his shoulder.
They are so happy
they aren’t saying anything, these boys.
I think if they could, they would take
each other’s arm.
It’s early in the morning,
and they are doing this thing together.
They come on, slowly.
The sky is taking on light,
though the moon still hangs pale over the water.
Such beauty that for a minute
death and ambition, even love,
doesn’t enter into this.
Happiness. It comes on
unexpectedly. And goes beyond, really,
any early morning talk about it.

LA DICHA
Tan temprano que fuera es aún casi de noche.
Estoy en la ventana, con un café
y la cabeza llena de esas cosas
que de mañana se hacen pasar por pensamientos.
Y ahora veo un chico con su amigo
subir por la calle repartiendo los periódicos.
Visten gorra y sudadera, y uno de ellos
lleva una bolsa en bandolera.
Son tan felices, los chavales,
que caminan sin decir palabra.
Si pudieran, me parece
que se enlazarían por el brazo.
Aquí están, muy de mañana,
haciendo juntos esto.
Se acercan, lentamente.
El cielo va alumbrándose,
aunque la luna, pálida,
aún flota en el agua.
Es tanta la belleza que por un instante
la muerte y la ambición, el amor incluso,
no tienen cabida en este cuadro.
La dicha. Sobreviene
de repente. Y trasciende, en realidad,
cualquier cosa que a estas horas
pueda decirse de ella.

What makes you happy? Hundreds of children helped artists Tracey VanDuinen and Todd Osbourne define happiness in this massive bricolage mural - the centerpiece of the lobby. The mural is 160 feet long and 19 feet high.
