At the very tip rises a hillock with a mighty linden tree on it. The chronicle states: "At the halfway point of the path, we are surprised by a rise created by nature and art. Here, the former landowners exercised their right to hang. Here was the gallows, affording the hanged men a beautiful view across the Lechfeld." Whether the hanged men still had much interest in enjoying the beautiful view remains to be seen. But it is not surprising that the gallows hill has since been firmly intertwined with the legends of the place. There is a story of an underground passage leading from the Goggelhof next to the parish church, beneath the present-day castle, to the gallows hill, where a castle once stood. This castle was inhabited by robber barons. When these rough, violent, and unruly men got too carried away, one day they and their castle sank into the ground. The bulging indentations on the hilltop still bear impressive witness to the former castle hill. From then on, silence fell on Gallows Hill. However, the old linden tree guards the enormous treasure of gold and precious stones hidden within its tangle of roots. Legend has it that if someone manages to walk around Gallows Hill seven times without taking a breath, it will release the treasure.

Are you, are you, coming to the tree?
Artwork containing the supermoon for my Red Bubble page. I always wanted to see a tree that has branches like hands or fingers that grasp for the moon. The image of the moon and field were photographes, and the tree is a blend of several shots of trees and branches i have collected over the time (i never throw away ANY picture because you´ll never know what you can use it for in a future project).

I love going out walking with my camera. I feel a oneness with my surroundings that is just not possible while driving. I love the freedom that walking brings; of being able to stop anywhere at any moment without worry of having to pull over and park. I find that while driving, it's often difficult to overcome the inertia of movement, of deciding something is even worth stopping to photograph. But when I'm out walking, I act on even the slightest whim. I find myself stopping frequently to study my surroundings, absorbing detail and appreciating the light, shadow, and most of all, the atmosphere. There's often a feeling of exhilaration associated with these forays. Something to do with knowing I've walked myself a mile or more away from any form of shelter. And that I'll have to walk that same distance to get back home. There's a tremendous energy flow to all of this as dusk settles in and visibility decreases. I think some of that energy was somehow channeled into this photo. I'd been up on the ridge shooting the evening sunset. I felt that usual eerie excitement as the sun slipped out of view as it set behind the distant horizon. I lingered for a bit in the reflected sunlight that lingers, the true twilight period. It's a strange time, especially in winter because of the short window between sunset and total darkness. It's really still too light for time exposure, but too dark for conventional photography. As darkness began to overtake the light, I decided it was time to head back down the hill. My senses seem even keener as it gets darker. Much easier to become complacent driving home rather than walking, especially through this environment. I kept glancing over my shoulder as I walked and finally stopped and impulsively shot this photo. Just enough light left in the sky to capture the film noir atmosphere that was enveloping me.

Quaker Cemetery

"The Quaker Cemetery is a privately owned cemetery in Leicester, Massachusetts. It lies on land donated to the local Quakers that is positioned between the Worcester Regional Airport and Worcester Reservoir. The actual name is the Friends Cemetery but it is more commonly known as the Spider Gates Cemetery.
The cemetery was founded in 1740. The first Quakers in Leicester were the Ralph Earle family and the John Potter family. The first burial was in 1740. The first Southwick, Amasa, didn't arrive in Leicester until 1800 and had nothing to do with the founding of the cemetery in 1740. The Southwick family probably joined in 1810 or thereabouts and became one of the largest groups to be buried in the cemetery. The Leicester Quakers closed the meeting around 1850 and transferred it to the Worcester meeting. The granite posts and iron gates were installed in 1895 under the terms of a bequest made by Dr. Pliny Earle. Their design was originally meant to represent the rays of the sun but have since taken on their more popular name of Spider Gates. The Southwick family has since had to replace one of the gates as it was stolen but an exact replica of the remaining gate was made so it is nearly impossible to tell the difference. The cemetery is currently maintained and in use by the Worcester Friends Meeting with the most recent burial being near 2013."
The hanging tree is in front of the court house in Goliad, Texas. It's the huge Oak tree on the left. I took this on the way back from the coast. Here's some history on it.
An official Texas Historic Landmark, the Goliad Hanging Tree is a symbol of justice, Texas-style. For 24 years the court trials of Goliad County were held under this big oak tree. Death sentences were carried out promptly, usually within a few minutes, courtesy of the tree's many handy noose-worthy branches. The tree also served as a gallows for a number of impromptu lynchings during the 1857 "Cart War" between Texans and Mexicans.
No tally was kept for how many men died in The Hanging Tree, but some estimates range into the low hundreds.
When Albuquerque was first settled, maintaining the law was difficult. A circuit judge would appear once or twice a year to hear legal cases. If a crime was committed after he left, it was expensive for the community to feed and house a prisoner for many months until the judge returned. Solution-the hanging tree where a criminal was hung by the neck until dead. Urban planning took place early in Albuquerque-the undertaker's house was built right next to the Hanging Tree.
It pays to learn about a city through a historical tour. I had walked past this tree many times over my two visits to Albuquerque and was oblivious to the tree's significance in the community's history.
Here's a shot of an old western movie town I shot in NM. It almost looks like a pencil or pen/ink drawing.

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
They strung up a man
They say who murdered three
Strange things have happened here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight in the hanging tree
Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
Where dead man called out
For his love to flee
Strange things have happened here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight in the hanging tree
Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
Where I told you to run
So we'd both be free
Strange things have happened here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight in the hanging tree
Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
Wear a necklace of hope
Side by side with me
Strange things have happened here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight in the hanging tree
Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
Where I told you to run
So we'd both be free

"The tree sits in the plush Olympic National Park, about an hour southwest of the Hoh Rainforest. Because the wondrous tree lacks a specific name, it’s also called The Tree of Life, The Runaway Tree, and simply, the Kalaloch Tree."
"The Kalaloch Tree is a Sitka spruce, the largest type of spruce. The Sitka spruce runs along the west coast, its name deriving from the expansive Sitka community located in Alaska. It’s noted for both its towering height and its wide trunk, two characteristics that contribute to this tree’s mystery. The Kalaloch Tree is literally hanging by a limb. As seen in the photos, the massive tree clings to its parting coastal bluff by winding thick roots."
"Underneath the webbed roots of the Kalaloch Tree is the Tree Root Cave. Inside, a stream falls into the cave and flows out into the ocean. It’s this stream that washes out the soil underneath the roots every year." theculturetrip.com
"Covering nearly one million acres, Olympic National Park provides three distinct ecosystems—glaciated mountains, rugged Pacific coastline, and lush temperate forests—and their distinct flora and fauna for nature-lovers to explore. Over 95% of the park is designated wilderness, protecting one of the largest wilderness areas in the lower 48, giving visitors the opportunity to experience remoteness and pristine nature in a way that few other places can."
"The 73-mile long coastline has rocky headlands, sandy beaches, thriving tidepools, erosion-formed offshore sea stacks, that provide habitats to marine and intertidal wildlife. The diverse forest communities making up the park provide homes to everythings from acid-loving wild cranberry bushes to giant spruce trees, hundreds of years old. The towering mountain ranges created by tectonic collision are topped with ancient glaciers." www.nationalparks.org

The inspiration for this image is from the 1925 ghost story - "A view from a hill" by M. R. James.
In this story the protagonist comes into possession of cursed binoculars. When he views a landscape through the lenses the view is disturbingly disrupted - a distant wooded hilltop becomes a treeless “grass field”, in which stands a gibbet, from which hangs a body....
Explored! - Thanks to all for your views, comments and favs - it is very much appreciated.

"Spider Gates Cemetery" (Quaker Cemetery)
Leicester, MA
October 8, 2021
Spider Gates Cemetery in Leicester is actually called the Friends Cemetery, or Quaker Cemetery. The cemetery was founded in 1740 and is privately owned. The nickname comes from the design on the cemetery's gates, and some call the place "The Eighth Gate to Hell." Local legend says the spot is a gate to another dimension, and many of the eerie stories surround a little boy who hanged himself in the trees. Ghostly reports include apparition sightings, strange sounds, and evidence of satanic rituals.

The house on McMahon Road first gained notoriety when a book, “Echoes of a Haunting,”
Clara and Phil Dandy lived in the house along with their children in the early 1970s. During their time there, they were visited by many spirits. A priest from St. Bonaventure University was at the house more than once to perform an exorcism which worked for awhile but as time went by the Dandy family lost the battle and ended up leaving the house for good.
As the years passed by a few families have lived in the home but didn’t stay for long. This is where Daniel Klaes chapter in this story starts.
