They are American Beech tree leaves, I believe, and were photographed on a cold, but snowless winter day about three years ago. The Beech is a tree that exhibits marcescence, by which leaves turn brown and remain attached to the tree through winter and into spring.
Scientists hypothesize that retaining leaves helps protect developing buds from being eaten by herbivores. Retention of the leaves may also help trees start flowing sap earlier in the spring.

This location has changed so much in the years I have visited but at the same time I always enjoy visiting this location.
These are beginning to become an increasingly familiar sight as more LTNs (low traffic neighbourhoods) are introduced.

The Blue Morpho butterfly, found in Mexico, Central America, northern South America, Paraguay and Trinidad, features brilliant blue color on the top side of its wings. But as you can see here, the underside is totally different The huge eyespots on the wings of this species resemble owl's eyes that are thought to scare away small birds and other insect eaters.
