Bouwinspecteur controleert of de aangebrachte binnenisolatie goed werkt

This monument located on Mount Buzludzha is the biggest ideological building in Bulgaria. It was built as a tribute to the creation of the Bulgarian socialist movement in 1891.

The construction of Buzludzha was made possible thanks to government funds and supporters’ donations for an amount of around 14 186 000 leva (around 7 000 000 €). The site was built by civil engineering troops from the Bulgarian army and volunteers. The master builder was General Delcho Delchev who was in charge of the Stara Zagora civil engineering section. The author of this project was the architect Guéorguy Stoilov. Several famous painters and sculptors have participated to the decoration.

Ever since the superseding of Bulgarian president Todor Givkovand and the political changes that occurred in Bulgaria from 1989, the state of the monument has continued to decay. portraits of Ludmila and Todor Givkov have been destroyed. The copper adornments have been stolen. The building is slowly disintegrating; the monument is abandoned and no public institution seems to be concerned by the conservation of renovation of the building. The Bulgarian socialist party itself is not taking any action towards the maintenance of its most important symbol. The big star has been perforated by gunshots because it was thought to be made out of ruby!

On Bulgarian derps tour with Dursty, John, Andrew and Mike. Visited very little due to the harsh roads and long drives in two car convoy, busted by a pistol and axe wielding guard, picking up a hitchhiker, removing a hire car wing mirror with a bin, countless selfies, a stray dog and not forgetting an insect bite from hell that gave me a club hand.

But the main event was accessed twice and was the main objective for this trip so all was good.

This is the final image from my series of the anti-police protest and demonstration I shot last month. This was an unusual experience for me because I consciously inserted myself into a situation that I would never consider if not for the opportunity to practice photojournalistic style photography. While I concede that our law enforcement and justice system are not perfect, I believe that many of the protestors were severely misguided. There were groups represented at this demonstration that stand for the complete overthrow of the government and society in general (i.e. anarchists and revolutionary communists). I find this political approach to be repulsive and a non-starter for any constructive change dialogue.

Over the past several months there have been high-profile news events here in the US that have polarized the black community against police. Many leaders and groups have twisted the facts and exploited these events as a way to expand racial division, promote riotous activity, as well as to gain personal power and wealth. It truly saddens me that there seems to be more of an effort to divide one another rather than to develop constructive solutions and bring peoples together.

Despite the fact that I strongly disagree with the stance of the protestors, I defend their right of expression of free speech. I enjoyed this opportunity to experiment with photojournalistic photography, and I am sure that I will look for other opportunities (different scenarios) to continue this form of photography. I am aware that the content of these images have been controversial and potentially disdainful to some, but I think the images effectively convey the story from this cold December afternoon. I also hope that you have enjoyed this series from a photographic viewpoint.

Finally, I would like to conclude by stating a few numbers.

•Last year 126 US police officers were killed in the line of duty.

•93% of all African-American homicides are committed by other African Americans.

•I estimate that there were about 100 protestors present at this demonstration. One week later, a rally was held at the same location in support of law enforcement. Reportedly up to 5000 people showed up to show their support for police.
