Sophia is talking about the dairy-free chocolate chip bars and rainbow window star she made she made for her two projects outside of Home Ec class.

 

(All of the girls in the class are homeschooled.)

 

I had each of the girls in the Home Ec class I teach make a short presentation about the two special projects they made outside of class.

The students are working on research titled “Design and Evaluation of Naval Vessels for Arctic Operations” and is for the Naval Engineering Education Consortium under Associate Professor Kevin Maki. Professor Maki is the director of the MHL.

 

The research involves using 7,200 wiffle balls to simulate sea ice conditions. In the background is Grace Gargiulo, a sophomore undergraduate in naval architecture and marine engineering.

Students were challenged to think of themselves as members of a marketing team, charged with identifying this book’s most compelling concepts and choosing one to develop into a promotional poster. Their primary audience? Students just like them.

So that students can bond with each other and become familiar with Canberra in a supported way, students live on-campus in well-appointed hotel-style rooms.

 

Our modern facilities include lecture and seminar rooms, a computer lab, library, and of course the Hotel Kurrajong, where students gain hands-on experience in all aspects of hotel service and management.

 

There is also a student gymnasium and recreation room, including a pool table and tabletop football, and an outdoor courtyard with a basketball hoop and a barbecue area with picnic tables for students to socialise outdoors.

Earlier in the week, Olivia watched SCUBA divers at the aquarium in Duluth feed the fish. We talked about the difference in SCUBA gear - from this old suit to what divers wear now. She thought this suit would be "heavy" to wear compared to what the divers wear now.

The Advanced Lab is home to MSE 360, a course about structural materials used for building everything from vehicles to buildings and beyond. In the first half of the course, students learn standard alloys before moving into design. MSE 360 is an opportunity to gain experience in both theory and application.

The demolding process took hours keeping students at the Wilson until after 10 p.m. The Winter term is always one of the busiest times of year at the Wilson Center as student teams move from theoretical design into production in preparation for competition season.

As part of the unit study on France, the girls and I made Rosemary Cashews (from a French cookbook). These turned out really good. There is some kick to these (they are spicy), and the fresh rosemary is a nice complement to the spice.

The girls were eager to try the fried rice and other snacks. This was part of the multi-disciplinary lesson on China and the Chinese New Year (which was January 26, 2009 - The Year of the Ox).

Sophia made this during her American Girl class at the homeschool co-op she's involved with. They are studying Josephina right now (U.S. History/crafts/culture during the early 1800s in the southwest United States and Mexico).
