SOUDA BAY, (GREECE), Jun.15 2019. National representatives from Canada, Greece, Netherland, attend the Operational Handover ceremony of Standing NATO Maritime Group Two held aboard HNLMS Evertsen. During this ceremony, Dutch Navy Commodore B. Boots transfers command of SNMG2 to Royal Canadian Navy Commodore J. Kurtz .The change of command was presided over by Rear Admiral A. Lennon, NATO Submarine Commander, on behalf of Allied Maritime Command.

SNMG2 is one of four maritime task groups providing NATO presence, maritime situational awareness and an operational capability to respond contingencies in peacetime and crisis.

In what I thought was a nice bit of symbolism, and NGR pulls into Gailes station as the EMU farewell tour disappears into the distance. The arrival of the NGRs signalled the end for the EMUs with only around a quarter of the fleet surviving into 2025 and now all retired.

 

Another batch of new units are set to be delivered in the next few years as the region prepares for the 2032 Olympic Games.

On Friday, July 16, New Zealand Ambassador Roy Ferguson officially handed over the kiwi pair to the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in a ceremony at the facility in Front Royal, Va. Dave Wildt, head of SCBI’s Species Survival Center, first discussed the Zoo’s conservation objectives and the role of SCBI in brown kiwi conservation efforts. Following this, John Mataira (pictured above), consul general for the New Zealand Consulate in Los Angeles, blessed the birds in the Maori tradition. Kathleen Brader, senior bird keeper at the National Zoo and Species Survival Plan coordinator for kiwis outside of New Zealand; Geoff Reynolds, SCBI bird keeper; and Warren Lynch, SCBI bird unit manager, accepted the pair on behalf of the National Zoo.
