Planing the opposite (none-jointed) face of the lumber. This makes the second face FLAT, and PARALLEL to the first (jointed) face. Because the faces are now parallel to each other, the jointed EDGE is now exactly 90 degrees to BOTH faces (we've made three sides of a square - or rectangle in this case).
After both faces are flat and parallel, I keep feeding the lumber through the planer (alternating faces on each pass) until I reach the desired thickness (1 3/4" in this case).
Simple box made for 8x8 card, using 4 A4 sheets of vellum, edges punched with EK Success edger punch, and tied with ribbon.

The company logo is engraved directly into the box lid, and a carved maple leaf was inlaid into the front of the box.
Boxes were constructed of red cedar, inlay of eastern maple.

There are embossed wedding invitations and now embossed wedding presents. The bride and groom’s names and the big date are hidden in the steel leaves with a custom photo album hidden inside. “Oh, we’re registered at Riggo Design.”

Here's something I donated to a charity auction at my son's school: 50 personalized notecards, with printed envelopes, in a handmade gift box.
After the faces are jointed, I joint an edge - some folks wait until BOTH faces are planed and thicknessed - but I find that doing an edge immediately saves time (I use a combination machine, and switching back and forth between jointing mode and planing mode takes valuable time).
When you joint an edge, you are making it FLAT, and exactly 90 degrees to the jointed face that you did first.

This shows the bookmatching achieved by keeping the strips in the proper order, and alternating their orientation prior to glue up.
Because this box will be dove-tailed, I cut the box pieces to length PLUS 1/16". So, in this case, the front and back pieces will be 16 1/16", and the sides 11 1/16".
The extra 1/16" allow me to leave a slight protrusion when dove tailing, enabling the finished box to be sanded smooth.
This little guy is the epitome of a knick knack. It can be used almost anywhere: coffee table, mantle, shelf. It doesn't do much. It's small. It can't even hold a movie-on-Lifetime's worth of chocolate. But the brushed steel leaf and black ant handle can definitely hold your attention. And really, isn't that what knick knacks are all about?
