Iyashino-sato preserved village, with Mount Fuji in the background.

Iyashi no Sato (いやしの里) stands on the site of a former farming village on the western shores of Lake Saiko. The village was destroyed by a landslide during a typhoon in 1966. Forty years later the village's traditional thatched roofed houses were reconstructed and reopened as an open air museum and traditional craft village where people can learn about the culture and try out and purchase different local handicrafts.

The village is now made up of more than twenty houses that have been converted into shops, restaurants, museums and galleries. Each of the shops specializes in a traditional craft such as pottery, incense or weaving. Some of the handicraft shops, provide hands on workshops for visitors to try making traditional products, including washi paper, charcoal and soba noodles.

A few of the houses contain museums, such as the Watanabe House which has exhibits on the daily life of the farmers who used to live in the region. There is also an Erosion and Sediment Control Museum explaining the causes of the landslide that destroyed the village, and techniques used to prevent such disasters.

The remaining houses include an art gallery that displays local artworks, a produce shop and a portrait studio where visitors can try on kimono or samurai armor for a small fee and take photos. Restaurants and rest houses can also be found around the village.

A Médina is a walled section of a city, usually defining the old city. In Fes there are twisting, turning narrow streets of cobblestones and clay. Watch out for donkeys loaded high with goods on their backs. Also watch out for the mopeds, motorcycles, bicycles and handcarts that comes charging towards you demanding right of way: not a place for the intrepid.

In a Médina you can purchase anything in leather, clothing, jewelry and handicrafts, not to forget the sweets with 100s of bees on them. Haggling is the name of the game, just remember to keep a firm hand on your phone and wallet.

Italy, Venice, Murano, a glass blowing factory & channel at Fondamenta dei Vetrai.

Murano was settled as early as the 6th century & made the place an important trading port.

Over the time, glass handicrafts dominated the region. Especially in the 13th century, when processing techniques from the Orient became known, this Venetian glass experienced gained enormous reputation & popularity, the products where exported as far as to China.

In the 19th century most of the craft rooms in were in the city centre in Venice. Due to the close proximity of houses, there were more & more fire accidents. The glassblowers saw their existence threatened, also they were also afraid that the techniques could be copied & wanted to protect them from espionage.

In 1291 this industry was forcibly relocated to Murano. The techniques are guarded like an eyeball & only passed on in the manufacturing families. Venice kept protecting the secret of the production of glass & of crystal but, notwithstanding it, the Republic partially lost its monopoly at the end of the sixteenth century, because of some glass makers who, even under threat of the death penalty, let the secret be known in many European countries

Today, there are still around 45 manufacturing companies on the island today, which are engaged in glass blowing. the artisans of Murano still employ these centuries-old techniques, crafting everything from contemporary art glass, glass jewellery to Murano glass chandeliers, the manufacture of mirrors & valuable engravings, among other things.

Some of the oldest companies still active today are that of

Pauly & C.–Compagnia Venezia Murano, founded in 1866 & the Salviati company, which is internationally known primarily for its glass mosaics. Their decorations adorned Aachen Cathedral as early as 1880. You can also find their glass mosaics in the Paris Opera, Westminster Abbey in London & the Windsor Castle Chapel.
