Among the most common birds in the woodpecker family, flickers have a range that covers most of the United States. This one was taking a brief break to stretch and ruffle its plumage on an old solitary tree in the Little Missouri National Grassland a couple of evenings ago (4-14-2024).
I don't consider myself a "birder" by any stretch of the imagination and this is a relatively large crop of the best frame I had of this little bird. Now I understand why bird images can become so addictive, though! One is always striving to get just the right pose, light and focus, all at one time, hoping the subject will do something that is a bit unique... The bird tracking/focus on my E-M1X is one of the features I love, for even with my slower telephoto it usually does quite well so long as there's sufficient light and contrast. I've hesitated obtaining a teleconverter. My 100-400mm is nice (this is handheld and I love the image stabilization, I must admit), even stretched this far, but still "slow" thanks to the variable aperature. I'll be studying and contemplating, to be sure, while admiring the excellent images some of my experienced contacts obtain. :)

One of the delights of shooting at the headlands was to be at all three eye-levels of the birds (above,eye-level and below). A pair of ospreys that scanned the headlands were quite used to tourists, fisherman, and odd-looking photographers, and often came close enough for full-frame views.

Perched on Creosote, fhis Warbling Vireo (Vireo gilvus) is described as drab, but his song is anything but that! Take a listen - www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Warbling_Vireo/sounds.

Now we move into that half of the year where we give a chance to photos previously overlooked. All will be previously unseen and newly processed.
Swallowtail
Papilio machaon britannicus
Yes i had him on my hand again yesterday. This time he stayed for several minutes allowing me to single handedly get a few close-ups lol. Proper hand job adjusting settings a few times with the one hand.
This specimen "Old Nick" has been around a few weeks now, I believe he was the first one to emerge which was first seen middle of May. He does seem to favour one particular area where i can almost guarantee finding him on sunny days. Been watching the milk parsley areas hoping to catch one laying eggs. Always another picture of these in mind while they are around living their short lives
