Seen playing on a visit to Dunham Massey Gardens on 14/7/25. Lovely music. Looked them up on YouTube:
Medieval Jukebox: Harp & Hammered Dulcimer Duo
“A unique and ethereal combination of celtic harp and hammered dulcimer with a play list spanning the centuries, from hauntingly beautiful medieval ballads to foot-tapping renditions of modern day chart toppers. Magical music from Bard to Beatles and Bach again.”
These young men seemed to be from three different countries but were acquainted on the Streets of Buenos Aires in 2008. Life on the streets can be difficult for street musicians.
Hammered dulcimer.
My son @Spielorjh plays Tuesday Tunes with an Irish group at one Irish tavern and sometimes elsewhere. This was a Sunday afternoon at Johnny's Irish Pub. Lanse played his banjo while one of his cohorts was on the hammered dulcimer. I could listen to them for hours.

I was strolling along the street of the Fori imperiali in Rome and I was beginning to think about going back Milan - back home, at last. It was then that I heard distant sounds of music some way ahead, like a glimmer in the gathering darkness - and peculiar sounds they were, indeed...
They were a group of three musicians playing a double bass, a clarinet, and a wonder of a musical instrument to be found along a street - an open soundbox full of strings: just to give a hint, it was something like an open harpsichord without a keyboard, or a hammered dulcimer - one will play the strings by directly hitting them with two drum sticks with their tips covered with felt.
Their music was quite striking, and their skill remarkable - especially the old man playing the unnamed instrument.
Sorry about the clarinettist: I have chosen to crop him to better the composition - as you may guess, the visual impact of a clarinet in the dark is not that great..
The dark comes earlier now and an autumn wind stirs outside, rustling through branches. Near midnight there will be one flash of light rapidly followed by a peal of thunder. Then rain. A flower gone to seed, plucked on one of the last summer days, rests on the strings of a hackbrett. In the dark, a photographer throws flashlight on the seeded flower, pressing a remote trigger, hoping to realise some vague idea. Taken with my analogue 70- 210 mm Tokina lens and a size three extension tube, quite a balancing act for my tripod. The flower is of a purple, thistle like kind that are beautiful, even long deflowered. A hackbrett is a German type of hammered dulcimer. This image is an "hdr" of two images, slightly differently lighted.

It was very hard not to see this young lady! The bright colours of her red hair and her blue fur collar demanded immediate attention, although her instrument - a hammered dulcimer - was equally interesting to me. I stopped, listened, and took photos.

At the mansion's open house, this man was setup in the music room playing the hammered dulcimer. He delighted guests with various Christmas songs.
With this brass lens, you have to put your subject in the very center as the sharpness has a quick drop-off as you move away. Plus, the bokeh tends to show a swirl around the center.
i took this from the edge of the stage and there was probably twice as much of the floor in the foreground. i really liked the empty space because it gave it a sense of distance, but there was a big spot on the floor and it was so distracting that i couldn't take my eyes off of it and i ended up cropping it out. i think i need to give my photos a quick look after i take them, just in case there are big spots in places that i don't want them to be :) also, i envisioned this in b&w, but the tones just didn't look right. anyway, not exactly what i had imagined in my head, but i still like it :)
Street performers in Scholars' Street; he's playing an amplified erhu (二胡) - a two-stringed type of violin, and she's playing the yangqin (扬琴), a hammered dulcimer.

Sulle note del salterio (versione "hammered dulcimer") : "Dizzi Jig" by Dizzi

. . . so says the jersey this girl is wearing as she plays a hammered dulcimer near Salzburg's cathedral.
San Fransisco is great place to go shooting if you are afraid to shoot strangers. There are so many street performers out there. For some reason if they are preforming it makes it easier to point your camera at them. I shot this one from the second level on pier 39.

His name is Tom Sanders and he plays his own works beautifully on the hammered dulcimer. Both he and his music are intense, intelligent, and uncommon. I enjoyed our conversation and I'm enjoying his CD. Thank you, Tom.

The look here from this group is more "authentic" -- that is, looking more like the way musicians in the Ozarks dressed on Sundays, or when performing for crowds at venues such as churches or fairs. Unfortunately, while trying to get a good shot of the man and woman, I was unable to get the hammered dulcimer that she was playing into the shot. Another reason photographing musicians in a gazebo isn't always the best thing to do.
This photo was taken with Eastman Kodak Motion Picture Stock 5247, ASA 100. I shot it with a Vivitar 400 S/L camera, using my Vivitar 200mm lens, with a Vivitar No. 85 filter to correct the tungsten balanced film to shoot in daylight.
27th September 2014 at Red Lion, Isleworth, Middlesex (Kara gig).
The Hamered Dulcimer has strings (between 40 and 120 with an average of about 60) stretched over a trapezoidal soundboard, and is played with wooden mallets or hammers. It originated in the Middle East, before reaching Europe by the middle ages. Hammered Dulcimers (like pianos and harps) differ from Plucked Dulcimers in not using fretting to change pitch.
Hammered Dulcimers are assigned the number 314.122-4 in the Hornbostel-Sachs classification of musical instruments ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hornbostel-Sachs ), indicating:
3 = Chordophone. Instruments where the sound is primarily produced by the vibration of a string or strings that are stretched between fixed points.
31 = Simple Chordophones. Instruments which are in essence simply a string or strings and a string bearer
314 = Board Zither. Instrument uses a string bearer that is shaped like a board, or is the ground.
314.1 = Instrument with strings parallel to the string bearer.
314.12 = Instrument has a resonator.
314.122 = Box Zither. Instrument has a resonator made from slats.
314.122-4 = Strings are caused to vibrate by hammers or beaters.
