When the water bowls freeze, the Cardinals and Finches wait for the woodpeckers to bring their mobile jackhammers into service. This little, female downy is hammerdrilling the ice into small pieces.
So I've been wanting to buy a hammer drill for quite some time now. Finally last week, Canadian Tire started running a 2-week-long tool sale, and I saw one I really wanted, on sale for $89.99 (regularly $119.99). Here is the item (you might have to enter your postal code to see this page. After that, if you can't see the item, just close the window and click on this link again):

Wonderful! So I buy the drill last week, haven't really used it yet, and I take a look at this week's flyer, and I see the same drill on sale again, same price, except now it comes with this bonus drill bit set, for free:
www.canadiantire.ca/browse/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT<... DeWALT+Hammer+Drill+with+Bonus
No way I'm missing out on this! So I take the drill+receipt back to Canadian Tire, and I tell them I want the bonus, and they thought it would be best for them to refund the drill and then have me repurchase it (this week's version of the drill comes shrink-wrapped together with the free drill bits, and the combination has a different SKU number, hence the refund/repurchase being easier for them). I notice at this point that the new box has a slightly different (darker) shade of yellow to it, and different text on the box. But the same DeWalt model number (DW508S) on the box. I figured this one was a different product revision, either slightly older or newer--no big deal. So I do the refund, repurchase, and head home.
When I'm at home, I open the box, and the first thing I notice that this drill is definitely different than the one I just returned! It is bigger, heavier (especially towards the front), and the inside packaging is different. Also, the drill/hammer switch on top is smaller and positioned differently than it was before. I guessed that this drill was older because it just didn't seem as sleek as the one I just returned. I thought about taking it back to the store once more, this time demanding I get the "sleeker" one, or at least ask to compare the 2 side-by-side.
So tonight I started doing a little research, doing things like browsing through DeWalt's website to see if I could discover any information on the drill's model history, looking through the drill's manual, etc. I finally just discovered what was going on.
To my amazement, the model listed on the side of the new drill says "DW511," not the "DW508S" that I originally intended to purchase. Did I just score a better drill? Maybe a worse one? I did some more research.
It turns out the DW511 inside this box is 6.7amps, versus the 5.5amps on the DW508S. The DW511 also has slightly better RPM and BPM ratings. So it would definitely seem I have scored a more expensive drill for the same price as a cheaper one, AND received the free drill bits promo!
And now for the crazy part, something I just noticed a few minutes ago, which is what persuaded me to post this to Facebook in the first place. I just noticed the model number on the box is actually a sticker. Guess what is underneath? Browse through the other photos to find out.
Does anyone know what might be going on here? The drill inside the box is a DW511, the manual is for a DW511, and the box is obviously for a DW511. Why would Canadian Tire (or DeWalt perhaps?) put stickers over every instance of the model number, declaring it a DW508S, a cheaper and less-powerful drill??
I think I am going to keep this one. I'm just very puzzled.

I've had this old B&D Hammer Drill for some 40-odd years(as you can tell by the colour scheme) and it packed up on me for the first time while doing a wee job last week. I opened it up, cleaned out some accumulated dust from around the field coils and armature, gave it a wee spray of 'magic skoosh' and hey presto - good as new again! Got my money's worth there!
Partway through the latest project: cutting through the double brick to create a storage space in the side of the house.
In the current climate I think I would think carefully about how I carried an item that could be easily confused with another item.
Last thing you want is start a security scare when you are only trying to create a hole in the wall to fit a downstairs loo.

I am very impressed with this Demolition Hammer. It drove the rod in 15 seconds. It is the 1-9/16 model.
