Through the first 28 minutes of Sunday's game, the Washington Redskins appeared to be sizing up the San Francisco 49ers for the knockout blow. They dominated their opponent in all phases in the first half, and they were just a few combinations away from putting the game out of reach.
But Washington eased up during the final two minutes before halftime and for much of the second half. The Redskins were still able to squeeze out a 26-24 victory at FedEx Field, but the potential technical knockout morphed into a narrow split decision.
The 49ers (0-6) scored 17 unanswered points to tie the game late in the third quarter. The shaky stretch for Washington started on a two-minute drill to end the half, when rookie quarterback C.J. Beathard came off the bench to lead San Francisco on an 11-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a one-yard touchdown run from Carlos Hyde as time expired in the first half.
San Francisco failed to convert on a third down earlier in the series, but Redskins safety D.J. Swearinger was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct to extend the drive. Former Redskins wide receiver Pierre Garcon trucked safety Montae Nicholson, knocking Nicholsonâs helmet off, and decided to flex on a reception that was two yards shy of a first down. Swearinger, a defensive captain, took offense to Garconâs actions. He said Garcon came over and tapped helmets with Swearinger, who then shoved Garconâs helmet to draw the penalty.
âI didnât react when I seen [Nicholson] go down. I reacted when I seen a guy flexing to the crowd. You ainât even get the first down. Iâm like why are you even celebrating, because you ran my man over? You ainât even get the first down, so why are you even talking? But in that situation, I canât react back. I just got to let him head butt me, but Iâm going to take up for my guy regardless of the situation.â
Garcon has displayed throughout his 10-year career, which includes five seasons in Washington, that he can get under an emotional playerâs skin. The penalty jolted the 49ers, who scored 10 points and missed a field goal in their three possessions during the third quarter.
Washingtonâs offense sputtered in that same quarter with its two possessions. The Redskins punted on their first drive in the second half, and then tight end Vernon Davis lost a fumble on the first play of the following drive.
The Redskins were able to remain composed against a desperate 49ers team seeking its first victory. They saw their nine-point fourth quarter lead dwindle down to just two as San Francisco approached midfield during the final minute. Unlike at the end of the first half, Washingtonâs defense was able to get the stop it needed as Kendall Fuller recorded his second interception of the season to seal the victory with three seconds left.
Redskins cornerback Quinton Dunbar replaced Josh Norman, who was out with a rib fracture, in the starting lineup and had an impressive performance. He tied for a team high two passes defended, including a critical deflection while defending Garcon on the final drive that was nearly intercepted.
The wide-receiver-turned-cornerback has made the transition appear seamless. Dunbar has been a backup throughout his three-year career, but he keeps rising to the occasion when the teamâs depth gets tested at the position. Redskins Coach Jay Gruden said Bashaud Breeland will receive an MRI exam on his knee Monday, which means Dunbar could be relied upon once again in a significant role against the Philadelphia Eagles next Monday night.
Wide receiver Ryan Grant made some big-time catches that looked eerily similar to Garconâs work in a Redskins uniform.
Grant finished with three catches, all resulting in first downs, for 39 yards. During a drive on which the Redskins regained the lead on Dustin Hopkinsâs 21-yard field goal in the fourth quarter, Grant hauled in an 18-yard reception on third and 11 and a 15-yard catch on second down to move the chains.
Gruden has believed in Grant because of how reliable he has been in practice. He has displayed his dependability at times this season when given the opportunity, and Grant did the same when Washington needed a play Sunday.
I had some pretty good hints to figure out the date on this one....the on the slide was October 1963....Iowa played a team with white & red uniforms, that let at halftime 3-0. Wisconsin visited Iowa on October 19, 1963, let at halftime 3-0, and won the game, 10-7.

If you've ever been to a college basketball game, you've likely seen the game they play during a timeout or at halftime. Two people have to run up the floor, stopping at various stations to don a pair of shorts, jersey and b-ball shoes, and then be the first one to dribble the full length of the court back and make a lay up. This poor girl never had a chance, as you can see, but she was an awfully good sport.
I had the pleasure of traveling up to Boone, North Carolina to watch my very talented cousin Caitlin Hollifield(#2) and her team of Western Carolina take on the tough Appalachian State in a conference game last night. The Appy State campus is beautiful, and they had a great facility. The first half was great, really close. Then ASU turned it on in the second half. I sat in a few locations and these aren't your "typical" sports shots, but I'm not your typical photographer either.
This is the fire-ravaged site of one of Paisley's most historic buildings, the former Halftime School in Maxwellton Street, it has lain derelict for 10 years. The building was hailed as one of Scotland's best designed schools when it opened in 1886 but only the main entrance remains intact. The Halftime School was commissioned by the Coats family to educate child mill workers. Female workers would attend the school and work in the mills on alternate days.

At halftime of the worst game in a crumbling Washington Redskins season, a crowd formed around FedEx Field’s west gate Sunday afternoon.
Their fans wanted to get out.
Who could blame them? By then the deficit was 34 points in what would become a 40-16 defeat to the New York Giants — a team Washington had beaten on the road just weeks earlier. But that was before quarterback Alex Smith’s leg was broken Nov. 18, before backup quarterback Colt McCoy’s leg was broken last Monday night and before emergency backup Mark Sanchez started Sunday and fell on his face as well as his back and even his side as the Giants’ defense swarmed through a broken Redskins offensive line.
So as what was announced as a crowd of 57,437 dwindled to something resembling half that number and Washington stumbled to its fourth loss in a row and fifth in six games, a reality seemed clear. At 6-7, the Redskins’ hopes of making the playoffs are slim at best. With two quarterbacks who weren’t in the NFL three weeks ago and an offensive line containing men who spent most of the fall sitting at home — along with star tight end Jordan Reed hobbling off early Sunday with a foot sprain — Washington is in jeopardy of losing all of its final three games.
And later Coach Jay Gruden bristled — for the first time this year — in his postgame news conference when someone asked what “the disconnect” was between what Gruden called a good week of practice and a nightmare of a game.
Gruden said he did not plan to make any changes to his coaching staff despite a defense that has allowed at least 400 yards in five of the past six games. A team spokesman said there were no planned announcements of firings.
But Snyder has a history of burning through coaches and executives, and the Redskins have gone into a complete collapse in recent weeks. While some of this can be attributed to the loss of Smith, who had been a strong locker room leader as well as a careful game manager, the team has be

Both are shot through Photoflex medium sized softboxes with louvers to prevent spill onto the rear diffusion screen. The third light is a gridded Einstein into a diffusion screen positioned over the black glass background to provide the gradient reflected in the glass and general backlighting to the subject. The Vivitar 283 has a homebrew grid made from stacked sheets of black coroplast (?) fitted into the Vivitar fliter adapter.

About 70 UPenn students and community activists organized by Fossil Free Penn ran onto the UPenn Yale football field at halftime and refused to leave as they held up three orange banners. On the banners in black lettering were their three demands to UPenn officials: Divest, Save UC Townhomes, and Pay PILOTS.
After 30 minutes under threat of arrests, 60 of the demonstrators walked off the field and were escorted out of the stadium. The rest of the protesters were handcuffed and led out to a police van, where their comrades who had earlier left the field chanted slogans until the police vehicle left.
The activists marched over to the Police Precinct at 40th & Chestnut where they blocked the street, rallied, chanted and sang until eventually all 19 people arrested were released. Each arrestee was charged with "Defiant Trespass."
