Comics Legend Hal Foster

His impact on comic strips and books is immeasurable. Every adventure strip with reality-based art owes a debt to the influence of comics genius, Hal Foster.
Foster was born in Nova Scotia in 1892. The young artist bicycled to Chicago to attend the Art Institute, National Academy of Design, and Chicago Academy of Fine Arts in 1921.
He became a successful advertising illustrator, then beginning a “Tarzan” comic strip early in 1929. He added Tarzan’s Sunday episodes in 1931 until he began his own masterpiece.
“Prince Valiant” began publication in 1937 as a meticulously researched and illustrated Sunday epic set in the imaginary age of King Arthur.
His attention to historical and physical detail was an innovation in the art form, although his heavy use of captions instead of dialog balloons was a return to the early history of comic strips.
Because comic strips and books are a visual art form, Foster’s reality-based art may have had the strongest and most enduring influence.
Before “Tarzan” and “Prince Valiant” entered the already crowded pages of newspaper comic sections, a much more simple and abstract style now called “cartoonish” or “big-foot” cartooning dominated the field.
His art had been influenced by early magazine illustrators. But it was Foster’s accurate anatomy, perspective, and lighting, staging and faithfulness to reality that would inspire awe and imitation in future comic strips and books.
Foster discontinued drawing “Prince Valiant” in 1971, but continued to plot the strip almost until his death.
Foster’s “Prince Valiant” comic book appearances include: “Ace Comics” #26 (’39, McKay), “Comics Reading Libraries” R-08 (King), “Feature Books” #26 (McKay), “Four Color” # 567, 650, 699, 849, 900, and others (Dell), and “King Comics” #146, 147 (King). His “Tarzan” will be reviewed in another column.
Hal Foster’s Prince Valiant” and “Tarzan” work earns the highest recommendation.
Some older titles are expensive and difficult to locate. Price guides or comics dealers help. Comic shops, conventions, mail order companies, and trade journals are best sources. Prices vary; shop around for the best values.

HISTORISCH NIEUW IN CENTRAAL NEDERLAND
Op dit moment wordt in het westen van Utrecht een compleet nieuw stadsdeel gebouwd: Leidsche Rijn. De grootste nieuwbouwlocatie van Nederland… Het is het gebied waar oud en nieuw samenkomen. Centraal gelegen, dichtbij de snelwegen en de stad Utrecht. Een gebied waar groen afgewisseld wordt met monumentale boerderijen, oude lintbebouwing en gevarieerde koop- en huurwoningen. Elke wijk heeft een eigen karakter.
In Parkwijk is recent een bijzondere, gelijkvloerse woning beschikbaar gekomen waar je als toekomstige bewoner volop van je privacy kunt genieten! In de nieuwe wijken blijven historische elementen als water, dijken, bomenrijen en bijzondere boerderijen, bewaard. Ze vormen een verrassende combinatie met nieuwe gebouwen en nieuwe ontwerpen. De contrasten en verschillen maken Leidsche Rijn Utrecht tot een levendige en kleurrijke wijk. Niet anoniem, maar inspirerend voor de bewoners; voor jou wellicht?
