STERCHI BROS. STORES
to furnish your home.
From VanishingGeorgia.com.
This landmark, visible on Georgia Highway 22 between Gray and Haddock, is an amazing survivor from a time when the roofs of rural barns were used to advertise myriad businesses and attractions. The “See Rock City” barns have become icons, but many other businesses were promoted in this way. This example advertises Knoxville-based Sterchi* Brothers Furniture Company [It Costs Less at Sterchi’s], which was the largest furniture store chain in the nation in the early 20th century, with over 650 stores in the Southeast. There are only a few of these Sterchi barns documented, to my knowledge, and most are in Tennessee. It is believed that most are at least 80 years old.
Captain Archibald Haddock is a retired merchant sailor who likes Loch Lomond whiskey and hates mineral water. He is also one of Tintin's closest friends. Haddock is highly addicted to whiskey but he also likes other spirits like rum

Hergé gave him an immoderate taste for whisky, which leads to many setbacks for the sailor: depression, hallucinations... and when the last drop escapes him, it's a nightmare!
The head of the figurine measures 23mm, from the tip of the nose to the back of the skull, and 25mm from the bottom of the beard to the top of the hair.
I used a miniature, a small 5cl advertising bottle with a neck measuring 17mm in diameter.

Captain Haddock is probably the most colourful character TinTin (in Holland: Kuifje) author Hergé (the a.k.a. of Georges Remi) created. Haddock often caters for comic relief in the storylines and is an undisputed master of expletive. In Holland, 'Mille sabords' is known as 'Duizend bommen en granaten'. In the Brittish translation it became 'Billions of blistering blue barnacals'. It's his most popular expletive - he used it on 166 occasions. 22 times more then the second popular one, 'Tonnerre de Brest' which became 'Thundering typhoon'.
Ofcourse invectives like 'swine, jelly fish, troglodyte and toffee-nose', are integral to his vocabulary too ;-)

If you like comic books, or have loved them in the past, perhaps you know the ones from Tintin by Herge ?, Then you know Captain Haddock too.
This is one of his well-known curses.
The fishing boat souvenir from Zeeland and shells collected during our walks along the Zeeland coast, and yes we love the North Sea coast! - made me drift a bit back to Tintin and Captain Haddock's adventures in this setting.
Don't know these comic books? Then you may have missed something.....Regards Rens

Man I love this series. Except for the really questionable entries that we don't talk about. Sealnoon just informed me that lego now makes the Birthday Boy hair in that earth-orange color and goddamn do I know what I'm gonna scour the earth for now.
Anyways, here's some figs.
Thompson: With a P, as in Pterodactyl.
Thomson: To be precise, "P", as in Psychology.
Tintin: Great Snakes!
Snowy: Arf!
Captain Haddock: Blistering Blue Barnacles!
Professor Calculus: A GOAT? ME!
lemme know what you think!

Front view of the Château de Cheverny, Cheverny, Loire Valley, France
Some background information:
The Château de Cheverny is a stately home located at Cheverny, in the département of Loir-et-Cher in the Loire Valley. It is one of the châteaux of the Loire valley and a prime example of early Baroque architecture. The commune of Cheverny has more than 1,000 residents and is situated about 10 km (6.2 miles) southeast of the town of Blois.
In 1315, Henry Le Mareschau was the owner of Cheverny. He was a member of the low nobility under the count of Blois. In the late 14th century, Cheverny was sold to Jean Hurault with its "houses, presses and vineyards". His grandson Jaques gained the title, Seigneur de Cheverny, having served under the kings Louis XI, Charles VIII and Louis XII and gained the governorship of the county of Blois under king Francis I.
The château was built at the beginning of the 16th century either by Jaques or his son Raoul. In 1510, Raoul applied for permission of the king to fortify the new house. Later the lands were purchased by Henri Hurault, Comte de Cheverny, a lieutenant-general and military treasurer of Louis XIII, whose descendant, the Marquis de Vibraye, is still the present owner. Only a portion of the original fortified castle possibly remains in existence today. It is somewhat of a mystery, because to the present day there is no reliable way to prove whether or not a certain section is part of the original building. The interiors were completed by the daughter of Henri Hurault and Marguerite, Marquise de Montglas, by 1650, employing several craftsmen from Blois.
Lost to the Crown because of fraud to the State, it was donated by King Henri II to his mistress Diane de Poitiers. However, she preferred Château de Chenonceau as her place of residence and hence, sold the property to the former owner's son, Philippe Hurault, who rebuilt the château completely between 1624 and 1630. The reconstruction was conducted according to plans of the sculptor-architect of Blois, Jacques Bougier. His design at Cheverny recalls features of the Palais du Luxembourg in the French capital of Paris.
During the next 150 years ownership passed through many hands, and in 1768 a major interior renovation was undertaken. Required to forfeit much of their wealth at the time of the French Revolution, the family Hurault sold the property in 1802,but bought it back again in 1824, during the Restoration under Charles X, when the aristocracy was once again in a very strong political and economic position.
In 1914, the owners opened the château to the public, being one of the first families who took this then unusual step. The de Vibraye family still operates the Château de Cheverny, which has remained a top tourist attraction till this day. It is renowned for its magnificent interiors as well as its collection of furniture, tapestries and objets of art.
It is also wortth mentioning that the popular Belgian comic book authorr Hergé has memorialized Château de Cheverny in his famous comic book series "The Adventures of Tintin". In this series Hergé used Château de Cheverny as a model for his fictional "Marlinspike Hall" (in French: "Château de Moulinsart"), which is the country house and family estate of Captain Haddock, a main character in the comic books. In these books the two outermost wings are not present, but the remaining central tower and two wings of "Marlinspike Hall" are almost identical with the central tower and the wings of its model Château de Cheverny. Today, there’s even a Tintin exhibition in one of Château de Cheverny’s outbuidlings.
Since 2000, the Château de Cheverny belongs to the UNESCO Word Heritage Site "The Loire Valley between Sully-sur-Loire and Chalonnes" with its many breathtaking châteaux. Altogether there are more than 400 of them in the Loire region.

My entry to Round 1 of the 2021 Bio-Cup, the theme being Media & Entertainment. My subtheme was Comics, and after a couple days of mulling I decided on building the good captain from one of my favorite comic series of all time. Of course, it took me until the last day to recognize my build was faulty and needed to be overhauled. Oh well.
Thanks to Luterem for the touch-up once again. Album not coming unless someone wants to see how this is constructed, because he only looks good from the one angle. :P

A small portion of haddock and chips. Today I was offered tar tare sauce and a wedge of lemon. The youth behind the counter suggested I would enjoy some gravy, too. He was right!
A YouGov survey found that 23% of Northerners regularly pour gravy over their chips, compared to 15% of Midlanders and 9% of Southerners. Greater Manchester is considered the spiritual home of gravy on chips, with 38% of residents indulging.
Afternote: I think, for clarity, that I should say the gravy is for dipping your chips in; not the fish! Also, you dip your chips; you don't pour the gravy over them - that's why you get the gravy on a pot.
I am learning a lot about fish and chips in England. In the North, the default fish is haddock while in the South it's cod. Personally, I prefer skate, but good luck finding any - it tends to go straight to France and Portugal.
Finally, "fish supper" is a Scottish or Irish term. But if you are in a fish and chip shop and ask for one, you tend to get it!
Fish and chips shops have remained open, with certain restrictions during each of our three periods of lockdowns here in the U.K. and have provided welcome take-away relief for many families seeking a respite from home cooked food.
We rarely used them before this pandemic and have only had one meal from them in this last year.
As a child, I always used to stare through the windows of these shops and marvel at the culinary delights and industry of the staff contained within!

A haddock boat, LK 96, Brothers. As luck would have it, it was built for three brothers in Trebs, Whalsay -- Lowrie, Tammy and WIllie Hutchison. The builder was Davy Leask of Lerwick, the date was 1896. It was a fishing boat, and a few other things, in the register of fishing boats until 1910, back in 1940, an Austin Seven engine ingeniously installed in 1945. It finally came out of use in the early 1990s. When it came to the Museum it was restored by Jack Duncan and Robbie Tait. Shetland Museum and Archives, Lerwick, Shetland.
