Yes, another one. Sorry for those of you getting bored of them. The blue van is some kind of Leyland, a pre-cursor to the Sherpa I think. I see this a lot but the Escort was a new addition the other day, so time for a shot. Had to clamber up on the railings to get the best angle.

The Hackney Empire is a theatre on Mare Street, in the London Borough of Hackney, built in 1901 as a music hall. Hackney Empire is a grade II* listed building. The theatre was built as a music hall in 1901, designed by the architect Frank Matcham.

Charlie Chaplin, WC Fields, Stanley Holloway, Stan Laurel and Marie Lloyd all performed there, when the Hackney Empire was a music hall.

This shot was taken on a cold December evening shortly after leaving work.

I love hackney.

Hackney Council in London have banned traffic from the northern end of Mare Street, commonly known as the Narroway for obvious reasons! This means that buses now have to go both ways via Amhurst Road, instead of northbound only as they did. So this picture of an Arriva London VLW on route 254 is now history.

ATV bought the theatre to use as studios in the 1950s, and shows such as Take Your Pick and Oh, Boy! were broadcast live. Certain episodes of Opportunity Knocks were also filmed at the theatre. Some scenes from Emergency - Ward 10 were also filmed there. From 1963 to 1984 the theatre was used by the Mecca Organisation as a bingo hall.

In 1984, Mecca found the building too expensive to maintain as a bingo hall, and it was offered to C.A.S.T, a satirical touring theatre group, headed by Claire and Roland Muldoon, as a London base. They also mounted successful variety nights headlined by a new breed of alternative comedy acts, such as Ben Elton, Dawn French, and Jennifer Saunders.

The theatre was threatened with demolition, and in 1986, actor-manager Roland Muldoon mounted a campaign to acquire the freehold and to re-open the Hackney Empire as a permanent performance space; allowing the theatre to return to theatrical use for its 85th anniversary.

EartH (ex Savoy / ABC Cinema), Stoke Newington. Designed by W R Glen for ABC, and opened as the Savoy in October 1936. It became the Konak Cinema in 1977 and the ACE in 1982 before closing in 1984. The stalls area was subsequently divided off as a snooker hall, and the balcony area was abandonded. In 2014 the snooker hall was transformed into a function area and in 2018 the cleaned and stabilised (rather than restored) balcony re-opened - both known as EartH (Evolutionary Arts Hackney) with a mixed programming including stand-up, music and films. The balcony area is now known as EartH Theatre and the stalls EartH Concert Hall, the former cafe and circle foyer is EartH Kitchen - cafe bar open during the day.

Boris Johnson, when elected as Mayor of London, promised he would get rid of articulated buses in London. Despite the economic recession Boris Johnson is determined to carry through this spectacularly expensive and wasteful crusade against what are effective people movers.

On Saturday 14th November, bendybuses were removed from route 38 after a mere 4 years service. Redundant buses are seen at Ash Grove Garage, Hackney, awaiting their fate. In the meantime, because the replacement double deckers have lower capacity, the peak vehicle requirement for route 38 has increased from 50 to 68. In the face of a recession, a £5billion cut to Transport for London's budget, and swingeing bus fare increases in 2010, how does this make sense?

I wanted to attempt this shot to include the Hackney Central sign on the bridge but it is a veritable minefield with a constant procession of double decker buses, vans and lorries. As can be seen here a Boris bus almost did for this and as a result is far too dominant in the picture.

Type treatment for the HACKNEY ROCKS event coming soon.

Spent my weekend back at home and had a wonder around Hackney Wick before meeting up with some friends for a drink. This little street had a cafe, the chairs and tables of which had spilled out onto the road accompanying a rather large Christmas tree.
