Devetashka - the Bulgarian Cave with 70,000 Years of Human Habitation

Devetashka cave is an enormous cave in Bulgaria, which has provided shelter for groups of humans since the late Paleolithic era, and continuously for tens of thousands of years since then. Now abandoned by humans, it remains a site of national and international significance and is home to some 30,000 bats.

Devetashka cave, which is known as Devetàshka peshterà in Bulgaria, is located roughly 18 kilometres north of Lovech, near the village of Devetaki. It is a karst cave formed from the dissolution of soluble rocks and characterized by sinkholes, caves, and underground drainage systems.

The cave itself is immense, measuring approximately 2 kilometres in length and with a huge entrance ‘hall’ measuring 60 metres in height. In places the ceiling is 100 metres above the ground and there are seven huge holes through which daylight illuminates the vast interior. It is these holes that earned the cave the name Maarata or Oknata ("the eyes").

About 200 meters from the entrance, the cave separates into two branches. On the left side, a small river runs along it, forming miniature lakes and waterfalls, passing through the main hall and eventually flowing into the Osam River. The right side is warm and dry and contains several chambers, ending with a round hall, known as the Altar. Beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, rivulets, majestic natural domes and arches can be found within the enormous cave and one can see why various human populations would have chosen Devetashka as their home.

Devetashka Cave was rediscovered by a Bulgarian scientist in 1921 but was not fully excavated until the 1950s when the intention was to transform the cave into a giant warehouse. Studies revealed that it has been inhabited almost continuously since the late Paleolithic era. The earliest traces of human presence date back to the middle of the Early Stone Age around 70,000 years ago. The Devetashka cave also contained one of the richest sources of cultural artifacts from the Neolithic (6th millennium - 4th millennium B C).

In June, 1996, Devetashka Cave was declared a natural landmark. The cave is probably best known for its part in the action movie ‘The Expendables 2’, filmed in 2011, in which Sylvester Stallone crash lands a plane into Jean Claude Van Damme’s subterranean lair.

Grey Shrike-thrush - it doesn't come in spectacular colours but it has a lovely song.

Scientific Name: Colluricincla harmonica

Description: The Grey Shrike-thrush is a rather drab coloured bird, although the plumage varies throughout its extensive range. Birds are mostly grey in the east, with an olive-grey back, and pale grey-white cheeks and underparts. In the north, the plumage is predominantly brown, and western birds are grey with buff underparts. Adult males are browner on the mantle than the female and young birds have varying amounts of rufous on the cheeks and wings.

Distribution: Grey Shrike-thrushes are found in all but the most arid regions of Australia and Tasmania, as well as on the larger offshore islands and in southern New Guinea.

Habitat: The Grey Shrike-thrush is found in forests and woodlands. It is a common and familiar bird, although some decrease in numbers has been noted around human habitation, particularly in the west of its range.

Feeding: The Grey Shrike-thrush searches for food on the ground, generally around fallen logs, and on the limbs and trunks of trees. It has a varied diet consisting of insects, spiders, small mammals, frogs and lizards, and birds' eggs and young, and some birds have been observed feeding on carrion. Fruits and seeds may also be eaten on occasion.

Breeding: Grey Shrike-thrush pairs generally remain together for life and inhabit the same areas throughout this time. Breeding territories of up to ten hectares are maintained. The nest is a cup-shaped structure of dried vegetation, and may be constructed in the same site year after year. Both birds share the nest-building and incubation duties, and both care for the young birds.

Calls: The Grey Shrike-thrush has a varied, rich and melodious voice. The call varies throughout its range and between individuals, but typical phrases include "pip-pip-pip--pip-hoee", "pur-pur-pur-kwee-yew", and a sharp "yorrick".

Built around 1688, the Notre-Dame-des-Victoires church is considered one of the oldest in North America.

It is on this strategic site, frequented by the Amerindians for approximately 3000 years, that Samuel de Champlain founded the trading post of Quebec on July 3, 1608. He erected a wooden dwelling there which was rebuilt in stone in 1624. From 1633 to 1682, this building served as a store before being destroyed by fire. The Notre-Dame-des-Victoires church was built on part of the remains of the dwelling, around 1688. From 1817 to 1854, the church was threatened with demolition on several occasions because of local rich merchants who made pressure to expand the market. The determination to demolish the church never materialized and the parishioners of the lower town finally found the funds for the restoration and renovation work. From 1854 to 1857, the church retained the services of my great-great-grandfather, Raphaël Giroux (1815-1869), architect and sculptor from Quebec, to replace the altarpiece and redo the interior decor.

Trulli, in Apulia are small round dry-wall construction of stone with a conical roof.

The oldest trulli we know of today are at Alberobello, dating back to the 14th Century: the habitations gradually grew into villages, later called Aja Piccola and Monti.

The dry-wall construction, without mortar, could be dismantled in a hurry: an efficient means to evade taxes on new settlements under the Kingdom of Naples

There is something magical about Looe Island (aka St George's Island), which is about a quarter of a mile off Hannafore Beach at Looe in south-east Cornwall. The sea around the island, which is a nature sanctuary, contains a substantial amount of marine life and there are several glass-bottomed boats based in Looe which bring visitors out to enjoy the sights.

Some scholars, including Glyn Lewis, suggest the island could be Ictis, the location described by Diodorus Siculus as a centre for the tin trade in pre-Roman Britain. There is a local legend that Joseph of Arimathea, a rich merchant who traded in tin, brought the young Jesus of Nazareth here on one of his business trips. There are of course other legends linking Joseph of Arimathea with the West Country.

People have been living on Looe Island since the Iron Age. Evidence of early habitation includes pieces of Roman amphorae as well as stone boat anchors and Roman coins. In the Dark Ages, the island was used as a seat of early Christian settlement. Looe Island became a place of pilgrimage for Christians and a small thatched roofed chapel was built there.

Matata Caves are located in the town of Meschers-sur-Gironde, about ten kilometers from Royan, Charente-Maritime. Near the caves of Regulus, they share many characteristics, they are a leading attraction.

The caves of Matata is a set of cave dwellings furnished in natural cavities over the centuries. Carved into powerful limestone cliffs overlooking the Gironde estuary of almost thirty meters, they are emblematic of the department of Charente-Maritime. Arranged on two floors, they form a network of cells that are accessed by corridors and stairs.

In the eighth century, Saracens dug, according to tradition, silos in terraces, still visible and which later served to hide the salt smuggling in order not to pay tax to the salt tax.

Saintongeais of traditional habitats have been restored, illustrating, models, furniture and support vessels, and the lives of those who have lived in these caves for centuries. One room has been converted into a small museum where fossils are presented as well as aquariums, where evolving animal species typical of the Gironde estuary (including sturgeon, which has long given the Gironde caviar).

Legend

Jean Ancelin, Charlotte de la Trémoille steward, have found refuge in the caves of Meschers after poisoning the prince Henri de Bourbon-Condé, the husband of Charlotte. There would be lived as a hermit for many years. One day, someone, having discovered, asked him his name, caught by surprised, he would have answered "Matuta" construed as a quote from the Latin poem "Matuta, Matutina" extolling the beauties of the goddess Aurora. The name would have become, by deformation: "Matata". The story of "Matata", the mysterious recluse, ends in a drama became suspect in the eyes of the people who take him as a sorcerer, he was immured alive in his cave.

Black woodpecker.

A forest bird from the woodpecker family, common in the forests of Eurasia. Within the range, this species is quite easy to identify - with its large size and black plumage with a red cap, it is noticeably different from other woodpeckers. A sedentary bird, only during the non-breeding period sometimes makes small migrations outside the range. It lives separately, pairs are formed only for the breeding season. It nests in mature high-stemmed forests, where it chooses tall dead or diseased trees without branches, in which it knocks out a hollow. It feeds on woody insects and their larvae, including ants, bark beetles, sapwood, which brings undoubted benefits to forest plantations, as a "forest orderly". Avoids human habitation.

It's not a huge surprise that there are habitations at the bottom of the Black Sea.

Before the medieval period mermaids were seen by many cultures around the world as terrifying, scary beings. Sailors originally described them as a complete fish body with a human or monster heads until eventually they evolved into beautiful sirens luring men to their doom. Some people have linked the mysterious Oarfish to these legends which adds to the overall fascination with mermaids into the 21st century.

This is the centre of the small village of Hannington, which is a few miles north-west of Northampton. Hannington was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. Evidence exists of habitation in the Bronze Age and in the time of the Roman occupation. Bronze Age worked flints have been found at three different locations in the parish, and there are traces of a Roman settlement just north of the present day village where Roman pottery has been found.

There are just four listed buildings in the village and three of them are in this picture. They date from the 1700s or later. The fourth, the Grade I-listed 13th century church, is out of shot to the right. Domestic buildings from that medieval era would have been wooden framed and built from wattle and daub. They have long since disappeared from the scene though sometimes you will see bumps in the ground where they once were.
