Devetashka - the Bulgarian Cave with 70,000 Years of Human Habitation
Devetashka cave is an enormous cave in Bulgaria, which has provided shelter for groups of humans since the late Paleolithic era, and continuously for tens of thousands of years since then. Now abandoned by humans, it remains a site of national and international significance and is home to some 30,000 bats.
Devetashka cave, which is known as Devetàshka peshterà in Bulgaria, is located roughly 18 kilometres north of Lovech, near the village of Devetaki. It is a karst cave formed from the dissolution of soluble rocks and characterized by sinkholes, caves, and underground drainage systems.
The cave itself is immense, measuring approximately 2 kilometres in length and with a huge entrance ‘hall’ measuring 60 metres in height. In places the ceiling is 100 metres above the ground and there are seven huge holes through which daylight illuminates the vast interior. It is these holes that earned the cave the name Maarata or Oknata ("the eyes").
About 200 meters from the entrance, the cave separates into two branches. On the left side, a small river runs along it, forming miniature lakes and waterfalls, passing through the main hall and eventually flowing into the Osam River. The right side is warm and dry and contains several chambers, ending with a round hall, known as the Altar. Beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, rivulets, majestic natural domes and arches can be found within the enormous cave and one can see why various human populations would have chosen Devetashka as their home.
Devetashka Cave was rediscovered by a Bulgarian scientist in 1921 but was not fully excavated until the 1950s when the intention was to transform the cave into a giant warehouse. Studies revealed that it has been inhabited almost continuously since the late Paleolithic era. The earliest traces of human presence date back to the middle of the Early Stone Age around 70,000 years ago. The Devetashka cave also contained one of the richest sources of cultural artifacts from the Neolithic (6th millennium - 4th millennium B C).
In June, 1996, Devetashka Cave was declared a natural landmark. The cave is probably best known for its part in the action movie ‘The Expendables 2’, filmed in 2011, in which Sylvester Stallone crash lands a plane into Jean Claude Van Damme’s subterranean lair.

A FAMILIAR species, in part of its affinity for human habitation. Stiil is Britians most numerus bird just, but you cannot hide the fact it also is in fast decline. I think they are beautiful, and wish more people would post them. Seen from home today (Tues)

Autrefois habitations de pêcheurs, ces cabanes ont été réhabilitées en 1993, le Village de Pêcheurs est également un paradis pour les amateurs d'ornithologie.
Formerly fishermen's dwellings, these huts were renovated in 1993. The Fishing Village is also a paradise for birdwatchers.
Taken at Masirah Island, Oman.
Thank you so much for dropping by my photostream and leaving all the kind comments. They are very much appreciated.
FACTS:
Distinctive sandy-brown songbird with a long rufous tail tipped black and white, often held cocked. The head has a strong white eyebrow and dark eyeline. The song is melodic and thrushlike and the call is a harsh “tek.” Usually seen foraging on the ground in open areas with dense bushes, sometimes in gardens and orchards close to human habitation.

Great White Egret - Ardea Alba
The great egret is generally a very successful species with a large and expanding range, occurring worldwide in temperate and tropical habitats. It is ubiquitous across the Sun Belt of the United States and in the Neotropics. In North America, large numbers of great egrets were killed around the end of the 19th century so that their plumes could be used to decorate hats. Numbers have since recovered as a result of conservation measures. Its range has expanded as far north as southern Canada. However, in some parts of the southern United States, its numbers have declined due to habitat loss, particularly wetland degradation through drainage, grazing, clearing, burning, increased salinity, groundwater extraction and invasion by exotic plants. Nevertheless, the species adapts well to human habitation and can be readily seen near wetlands and bodies of water in urban and suburban areas.
The great egret is partially migratory, with northern hemisphere birds moving south from areas with colder winters. It is one of the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) applies.
In 1953, the great egret in flight was chosen as the symbol of the National Audubon Society, which was formed in part to prevent the killing of birds for their feathers.
On 22 May 2012, a pair of great egrets was announced to be nesting in the UK for the first time at the Shapwick Heath nature reserve in Somerset. The species is a rare visitor to the UK and Ben Aviss of the BBC stated that the news could mean the UK's first great egret colony is established. The following week, Kevin Anderson of Natural England confirmed a great egret chick had hatched, making it a new breeding bird record for the UK. In 2017, seven nests in Somerset fledged 17 young, and a second breeding site was announced at Holkham National Nature Reserve in Norfolk where a pair fledged three young.
In 2018, a pair of great egrets nested in Finland for the first time, raising four young in a grey heron colony in Porvoo.

A beautiful mushroom. Maybe oak oyster mushroom.? If anyone knows this mushroom, I'm interested.
Work of Catherine Ikam and Louis Fleri located on the site of the habitation in the sculpture garden dedicated to the Caribbean culture. This bronze sculpture is a contemporary version of the Janus of antiquity. The features represented are indeed those of Yoona , an old person, first appeared in 1999 at the European House of Photography in Paris.
Perhaps the best preserved of all stone built sheepfold bields in the Yorkshire Dales and a very fine advertisement for Swaledale as it is either the first or last sign of human habitation to be seen on the road from upper Swaledale to Nateby in Cumbria
I think the factory where I work has a grunge spaceship sort of vibe. Like in the first Alien movie. I know, I am weird like that. I am a Sci fi freak.
Happy Slider Sunday
Like all crows worldwide the Pied Crow is very much an opportunist. This one and many others like it were more often than not seen around human habitation. In this case it was found around the back of a restaurant, no doubt looking for food left overs.
We only came across one other species of crow on this trip and that was the House Crow. A bird that had been introduced by there British to Zanzibar in 1897. The idea was that the house crows would clean up the waste left by humans. Alas they spread really easily throughout East Africa and are now regarded as an invasive species. In fact I believe that a they have also reached Holland as recently as 1998.

The Minster is tucked away in a deep valley besides the Hodge Beck in Kirkdale. Set off the main A170 road and away from habitation, the only sound is bird song. It is an enchanted place. The surrounding trees make photography difficult with shadows most of the day
St Gregory's Minster is an Anglo-Saxon church with a rare sundial, in Kirkdale near Kirkbymoorside, Vale of Pickering, North Yorkshire, England. It is a Grade I listed building. (Wiki)
The present building preserves a considerable amount of early Anglo-Saxon crosses and sculptural fragments built into the fabric of the church, which date to around AD 750 and it is likely that a church existed on this site in the sixth century. The church is most famous for the Saxon sundial, which has been preserved under the porch. The sundial dates from approximately 1055 to 1065

Abran is a little bigger village in Zanskar valley. It is the first permanent human habitation after Rangdum, which is on other side of Pensi La pass and around 70 kms away. This is the only spot where you can get a small eatery, where you can have food after a long journey from Rangdum side...I loved the wide green valley closely surrounded by mountains from all around...taken in Zanskar valley in Ladakh Himalayas, India
A sparrow's portrait. The bird reminds us of the psalm 104:
“By them shall the fowls of the heaven have their habitation, which sing…”
Looking across buttes in Valley of the Gods towards Monument Valley with the early morning light filtered by a light cloud cover. This region exudes a spiritual grace, not surprisingly as a place of habitation by indigenous peoples for at least the last 12,000 years as well as a popular destination for many seeking peace in the empty raw landscapes of the Colorado Plateau.
Valley of the Gods is likely to be formally reincorporated into the Bears Ears National Monument with recent actions by President Biden, reversing the previous administration's drastic shrinking of the monument established by President Obama.
Jeremiah 9:10 “For the mountains will I take up a weeping and wailing, and for the habitations of the wilderness a lamentation, because they are burned up, so that none can pass through them; neither can men hear the voice of the cattle; both the fowl of the heavens and the beast have fled; they are gone.”
Kompong Chhnang (Cambodia) - Very few portraits taken during my recent trip to Asia. It is the only portrait of the series on the floating village. And again, it was the boatman who took me to the heart of the lakeside village. This is partly explained by the absence of a long focal length in my equipment. To have tighter shots, the boat would have had to come close to the floating houses and I would have pointed my lens under the nose of the inhabitants.
When I do portraits, especially with short focal lengths, I am in direct contact with the people photographed. In the preamble, so as not to play the intrusive cowboys, I exchange a few words with them. A posed portrait often follows, which I show them on the back screen. Then, when they have forgotten my camera a bit, I take photos that I hope will be more natural where the gaze is no longer directed towards me. A bit like on this photo where, even if the boatman is facing, you can see that he is not looking at me.
