Ha Ha Tonka is a favorite destination in the Lake of the Ozarks. It's now a state park. Sitting on top of the bluffs are the castle ruins. What's left of a grand estate built in the early 20th century. The castle's life was short, burning in 1942.
As the years go by, less and less of the castle is available to view. There is now fencing and signs keeping visitors on the perimeter. The sky was a bland gray the day we visited. I decided it looked a bit better with a different sky.
From our recent trip to Vietnam. We went on a three day cruise in Ha Long and took in the great sights and Vietnamese culture.
Chove. Há silêncio, porque a mesma chuva
Não faz ruído senão com sossego.
Chove.
Chove. Nada em mim sente...
Fernando Pessoa, in "Cancioneiro"
In the early 1900s, the wealthy Kansas City businessman Robert Snyder purchased 5,000 acres that included a spring-fed lake.
He selected a site on the rocky summit above for his retirement home, saying, “I will fish and loaf and explore the caves of these hills, with no fear of intrusion.”
But just as imported Scottish stone masons began work on his dream, Snyder died in 1906 in one of the state’s first automobile fatalities. His sons finished the home, but it was gutted by fire in 1942. The carriage house burned the same day and, in 1976, the water tower was burned by vandals.

This was taken from the small island where we stopped to do a hour or so of kayaking. There was a short climb to a cave where on the multi day cruises dinner is served inside. Our cruise was just an overnight one so it was a quick visit to the island, a quick sea kayak, then back on the boat for a short trip to our anchor point and dinner. The views were constantly spectacular and many pixels were used up as we cruised through this UNNESCO World Heritage area. Our cruise was actually in the smaller bay above Ha Long Bay so there was far fewer other boats on the water. The company we used was Indochina Junk, who were fantastic and we all enjoyed a memorable cruise with spectacular meals to go along with the scenery.
