Designed and engineered by Danish firm Ove Arup & Partners, and opened by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1984, the Kylesku Bridge replaced the old but much loved ferry operating between Kylesku and Kylestrome. This curving, lifting, banking, five-span, pre-stressed hollow concrete bridge is 276m long and crosses the narrows where Loch a' Chairn Bhain joins Loch Glen Dubh at a height of 24m. It has been described as one of the most beautiful bridges in the world and has won several design and construction awards. You might think that such a modern structure would look out of place in this wild part of Scotland - but you'd be wrong...
