April 19, 2017 was the day Sony signed a death warrant for the venerable DSLR, with the introduction of the A9.
The SLR survived the film to digital transition very nicely, but now, after some some 156 years after it was first reduced to practice for the first time, it has reached the end of its road. There is a nice history of the SLR at Wikipedia that is worth reading.
The first SLR patent was granted in 1861, and the first 35mm commercial SLR was from Exacta in 1936. The first DSLR was actually from Kodak in 1991, with a 1.3MP CCD sensor. The first professional DSLR was the Nikon D1 in 1999.
My first digital camera was a mirrorless, a Kodak DC260 in 1999, then the first Canon PowerShot later the same year. My first DSLR was a Nikon D100 in 2003. Through the years, I have gone through the Nikon D100, D200, D300, D700, D4, D800E, and D810, before switching to Canon with the 5DS R and the EOS-1D X Mark II, the most capable DSLR I ever owned.
My brief ownership of the 1DX II abruptly came to an end, less than two days after Sony announced the A9. I sold my 1DX II yesterday, and ordered my A9 within the first 40 seconds after B&H started accepting preorders.
As a Physics major and later, electronics engineer with a pretty good background in optics, semiconductor technology, image sensors and chip design, I can understand when there is a quantum step forward in technology vs. new gear that simply adds some bells and whistles for the sake of coming out with something new.
So when there is a new product that also represents a new generation of technology that can meaningfully elevate my abilities, I have no hesitation in selling my current gear and upgrading to the new. In this respect, I look at cameras more like leases than purchases.
Normally, two or three of the following improvements would have merited a serious consideration to switch from a Canon 1DX II or a Nikon D5 to the Sony A9. But the following list of EIGHT major breakthroughs, as well as a number of other capabilities the A9 has, have just obliterated the Canon 1DX II and the Nikon D5:
- 24MP resolution, which is a big improvement
- 20 frames per second
- 693 in-sensor PDAF points
- 60 times per second focus measurement
- Zero blackouts!
- Silent shooting
- Large buffer size
- Half the weight and bulk
Videos like this from Tony Northrup are unlikely to help used 1DX2 values, and I figured it's likely only going to get worse once the A9 starts shipping, and people started dumping their Canon and Nikon DSLRs on eBay. So I got out before that.
I don't know if Nikon and Canon will continue to flog a dead horse, as Leica has been doing with the rangefinder for the past 6-7 years. I doubt it. It is more likely that the DLR will plummet hard down a cliff and meet with sudden death, than gradually roll down a hill and decay over many years.
Se puede definir la Hora Azul como el intervalo de tiempo que transcurre al anochecer, empezando una media hora antes de que el sol se ponga, y finalizando treinta minutos desde que el sol se pone.

Just picked up the new H&Y Magnetic Filter Holder for the M.Zuiko 7-14mm F2.8 from PhotoSphere.Sg in Singapore. This product is so simple, you wondered why nobody has ever done this before.
The holder is all metallic and fit perfectly to the lens by using a clamp with foam gasket around and in the front, there are four teeth that will go into the petal lens hood of the lens.
If you already have a 100mm filter system, you can use your existing filters by just putting the magnetic frame around your filters.
To use the filter you just put it onto the holder. Technically, you can stack as many filters as you want, however, for the 7-14mm I was able to use it up to 3 filters without any vignette. Furthermore, when you are using a graduated filter you can turn the filter up to about 40º and still not get any vignette.

In the Great War industrial espionage was common. The Heliconian High Command managed to get hold of several blueprints including that of the P-23 Skywolf. The plans were studied and improved upon, notably, the nose-mounted rocket launcher was removed and replaced with four 30mm cannons. Other improvements were made to the streamlining and 2 stabilizer fins were fitted above the main wings. After the War many falcons were bought by local freelancers as well as for private air forces. The plane we see here is freelancer Yvette Gagnaire's plane the "Queen of Hearts", the trademark blue of the Heliconian Airforce being replaced with her own personal white and red livery.
