Taken shortly after the last shot, using a polariser which is permanently attached to the front of the 14-140 lens on the GX9. Twisting it round revealed the fine reeds in this small dark tarn on a col at the top of Combe Door on the way up to Glaramara.
Straight ahead in the distance are two of the Langdale Pikes: Harrison Stickle and Pike O'Stickle, seen from the back.

The Herdwick is a breed of domestic sheep native to the Lake District in North West England. The name "Herdwick" is derived from the Old Norse herdvyck, meaning sheep pasture. Though low in lambing capacity and perceived wool quality when compared to more common commercial breeds, Herdwicks are prized for their robust health, their ability to live solely on forage, and their tendency to be territorial and not to stray over the difficult upland terrain of the Lake District. It is considered that up to 99% of all Herdwick sheep are commercially farmed in the central and western Lake District.
The wool of a Herdwick has unique qualities relating to durability. Thick bristle type fibres will often protrude from garments made from the wool, forming a protective layer in blizzards—most likely the same qualities that protect the sheep in similar conditions. Herdwicks have been known to survive under a blanket of snow for three days while eating their own wool.
Severely threatened by the 2001 outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in England and Wales, the breed has survived due to the intent to preserve this unique animal as a crucial part of traditional Lakeland agriculture. Still far fewer in number than most commercial breeds, Herdwicks survive largely due to farming subsidies.
The majority of the land where Herdwicks are farmed is unfenced and the sheep are free to roam where they wish. However, Herdwicks have an in-built homing instinct that is passed from generation to generation about which part of the fell they are supposed to graze on. This ‘heafing’ behaviour is taught by ewes to their lambs, and the knowledge of their roaming land will stay with them throughout their life.
As Herdwick sheep are ‘heafed’ to their particular fell, it would be disastrous if a flock was sold along with a farm. Therefore farms are typically bought or rented with existing flocks in place, as these Herdwick sheep have lifelong knowledge of that particular fell which couldn’t be re-taught.
The legendary King Arthur has a direct association with the Castle Rocks of St John, courtesy of Sir Walter Scott’s epic poem of 1813, Bridal of Triermain. The poem tells the story of a young knight named Roland de Vaux who falls in love with a mysterious woman named Gyneth, who is revealed to be a fairy queen. The story takes place in the scenic Vale of St. John, near the town of Triermain. Gwyneth resides in the castle there (Castle Rock).
Synopsis of the poem:
The Bridal of Triermain interweaves three stories, all with a Lake District setting: the eighteenth-century courtship of Arthur and Lucy, the Arthurian Legend of 'Lyulph's Tale', and the twelfth-century romance of Sir Roland de Vaux.
In order to warn his aristocratic lover Lucy against excessive maidenly pride, the low-born poet Arthur recites 'Lyulph's Tale' in cantos I-II. He tells how how King Arthur is seduced by the enchantress Guendolen. When he abandons the pregnant Guendolen to resume his kingly duties, she swears revenge. Sixteen years later, the fruit of their union, Gyneth appears at Camelot to remind Arthur of his promise that should he and Guendolen produce a daughter, she would wed the bravest of the Knights of the Round Table. Arthur declares a tournament with Gyneth's hand as the prize but instructs her to halt the combat before lives are lost. As the instrument of her mother's wrath, however, she does nothing to end the ferocious fighting, until Merlin arises from a chasm in the ground to punish her. She is sentenced to slumber in Guendolen's enchanted castle until awakened by a knight as brave as any of the Round Table.
The poet Arthur's courtship of Lucy proves successful and, following their marriage, Lucy begs him to tell of Gyneth's fate. In the third and final canto, then, he recounts the quest of the twelfth-century knight Sir Roland de Vaux of Triermain. He has heard Gyneth's legend and sets out to find the enchanted castle. Having located it in the Valley of Saint John, he successfully passes through a series of allegorical dangers and temptations (Fear, Avarice, Sensuality, Ambition) to awaken Gyneth from her five hundred-year sleep and win her hand.

The GX9 has some tricks up it's sleeve that the S5 or S5mk2 don't, such as in-camera panorama. It's not a perfect implementation: the resolution could be higher and it doesn't cope well with exposure changes during the pan unless you remember to lock exposure before pressing the shutter button, but it's a great feature to have to capture memories quickly.

As I was taking this photo, a young man came out to greet me and explained that he had surprised his girlfriend on their date night by taking her up here to spend the night in this bothy. The hut has no facilities whatsoever, and she was apparently a little apprehensive at first but I'm sure she enjoyed it because there was a stunning sunset at the far end of the valley (more on that later).
