Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, the Sikh temple. New Delhi, India
The Sikh religion began at the end of the 15th century. The Muslims clashed with Hinduism and Guru Nanak (1469-1539) saw the brutality of the Mughals. His teachings centered around equality and reconciliation between Hindus and Muslims. After making a pilgrimage to both Hindu and Muslim holy sites, he founded a new monotheistic religious community. As a mark of their devotion to Guru Nanak, his followers called themselves Sikhs, a name which means disciple.
Sikh Langar is based on Sikh religious principals of Seva (Voluntary Service to Community) and Wand Ke Chakna (Share one’s food around). The principal dictums of Sikh living are "To earn one's living by honest labour"; "Remember Almighty Lord or Supreme Being - Akal Purukh" all the time and "share with others what you can - afford to give". Thus for Sikhs to serve in Langar for cooking, cleaning, distributing or donating, are fulfillment of their religious obligation. Sikhs believe in existence of "One Supreme Being" for the whole universe and also that all humans are children of the same One Supreme Being, which is formless, not subject to life and death, Omnipresent. Thus serving all humans without any inhibition on account of cast, colour, religious or financial status, is compliance of Sikh religious code.

Gurudwara Bangla Sahib is one of the most sacrosanct Sikh houses of worship in Delhi.

Gurudwara Bangla Sahib in Central Delhi. The corridor, the pilgrims and people taking rest from the sun.
Sikhs Of Nanak ! That is what Sikhs were known as. Nanak realized that too much potential and human energy is getting wasted in inter religious feud and cast system. He took Muslims , Hindu, Lower cast untouchable Hindus as his follower ; whoever believed that God is one and human are equal in his court was welcome to his faith. Mughals beheaded few Sikh gurus and their children but failed to stop the juggernaut of Sikhism.
Islamic Invaders came to India from the North-Western direction ; obviously on their way to Delhi they used to plunder Punjab the land of Sikhs, first. Pujabis ( including Muslim, Hindu & Sikh )used to desert villages and took to jungle ; Islamic invaders beheaded and raped more Muslims than Hindu or sikh ; when the invading army used to retreat from Delhi with loads of Loot , slaves and captives ; willy Sikhs used to follow them and pounce upon them at night to make their load much lighter. Gradually they started being respected through out India as the savior of Indians.
Every Sikh is addressed as Sardar ( means Chief / Headman ) which means every one is guided by himself , apart from Guru they do not follow any one. Give him his horse, Kirpan or Machine Gun and leave him on his own to fight ; each one will take an army, head on. The willy wolves of East India Company knew it well and used them against the last Mughal to take over Delhi.
Today , you can find a Sikh at every corner of the globe. Hard nose businessmen, valiant fighter, superb sportsmen above all a fun loving race. Present PM of India is a Sikh. When you come closer to this community you have to wonder Wah Guru ! What a race you have created !

Volunteers prepare tens of thousands of meals each day at the Sikh temple Gurudwara Bangla Sahib in New Delhi, India
The takhalmmlolt is an elevated throne upon which Sikhs place the Guru Granth Sahib, their holy scripture. SIkhism arose in the 15th century, in part, as a response to perceived inequality found in Hinduism. Sikhs see all people and both genders as equal. Castes are not recognized. It is monotheistic, recognizing only one god, yet it does not claim a monopoly on absolute truth arguing that no religion can. It stresses right living and selfless public service over a monastic contemplation of god. In a little less than 500 years, Sikhism has become one of the world's largest religions.
Most Sikhs live in the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent which was partitioned between India and Pakistan in 1947. After partition, Sikhs were systematically driven out of Pakistan; few remain. They represent the majority population in the Indian state of Punjab.
Sikh men can be identified by their turbans, which cover their uncut hair and a wooden comb, their long beards, distinctive pants, a steel bracelet, and a small dagger-like sword.

Gurudwara Bangla Sahib - Sikh temple in Delhi
Shabad Kirtan: which is the singing of hymns from the Guru Granth Sahib. Strictly speaking only Shabads from Guru Granth Sahib, Dasam Granth and the compositions of Bhai Gurdas and Bhai Nand Lal, can be performed within a gurdwara. It is improper to sing hymns to rhythmic folk tunes or popular film tunes.
Paath: which is religious discourse and reading of Gurbani from the Guru Granth Sahib, with its explanations. Broadly here are two types of Paath : Akhand Paath and Sadharan Paath.
Sangat and Pangat: which is a free community kitchen as a langar for all visitors, regardless of religious, regional, cultural, racial, caste or class affiliations.
Gurdwara Bangla Sahib is an important historical and religious place in India. Dedicated to the eighth Sikh Guru, Sri Harkishen Sahib, it is situated near Connaught Place Market in New Delhi. Before entering the shrine, the devotees take a holy dip in the holy pond, known as 'sarovar'. Out here, a father is giving holy dip to his two sons.

As part of their belief in selfless public service, Sikhs offer free meals 365 days a year to anyone who shows up at their temple. The temple in Delhi serves 10,000 meals each day. The temple in Amritsar, Punjab, serves 100,000 each day. All of the food is donated. The meals are cooked and served by volunteers.

Gurudwara Bangla Sahib is one of the most prominent Sikh gurdwara, in Delhi, and known for its association with the eighth Sikh Guru, Guru Har Krishan, as well as the pool inside its complex, known as the "Sarovar." It was first built as a small shrine by Sikh General Sardar Bhagel Singh in 1783
The 8th Sikh Guru, Guru Har Krishan resided here during his stay in Delhi in 1664. During that time, there was a smallpox and cholera epidemic, and Guru Har Krishan helped the suffering by giving aid and fresh water from the well at this house. Soon he too contracted the illness and eventually died on March 30, 1664. A small tank was later constructed by Raja Jai Singh over the well, its water is now revered as having healing properties and is taken by Sikhs throughout the world back to their homes.
The grounds include the Gurudwara, a kitchen, a large (holy) pond, a school and an art gallery. As with all Sikh Gurdwaras, the concept of langar is practiced, and all people, regardless of race or religion may eat in the Gurdwara kitchen (langar hall). The Langar (food) is prepared by gursikhs who work there and also by volunteers.
