Long's Theater opened in the mid 1940s and only lasted until the early 1950s. It's been the home of the Pasadena Gun Center for 20 plus years I think. It was apparently the centerpiece of a wonderful art deco shopping area in old downtown Pasadena on Shaw Street. The old Rita Theater was directly behind it and the Capitan Theater was several blocks east of Long's. Pasadena, Texas. 7.7.2012.
The Pasadena Gun Center set up shop in the old Long's Theater (mid 1940s - early 1950s) at some point after the theater closed. Pasadena had a vibrant trendy art deco shopping district at one time. The gun center is now closed and the surrounding buildings are in various states of decay.

A gun range just out of town (on the Vandenberg Space Force Base) I've never seen used, altho Google tells me the local Service Personnel and Gun Club has regular meets there.
Flickr map calls it Jesus Maria -- think the missionaries had any influence around here ?
Was this shot hard to get? Yeah!
Am I proud of this shot? Um, let me think.
That's the real fire coming out of the pistol ... NO Photoshopping. Just selective color...that's it.

Guns are very present in my novel, Martha's Vine, and my main character uses a pistol like the one showing.
This is my Browning Challenger. It's a sweet little gun that jams only once in awhile. It hates the top bullet in the magazine, so I baby it, and don't fill the mag to the top.
It's usually not good to write from an ivory tower, and it's especially true when writing about something as unique as gun usage.
For instance, my heroine simply cannot shove this gun down the back of her pants...the barrel is way too long. LOL Makes her look like she has a tail. And she'd never be able to sit down.
But...she can shove it down the front of her pants, so long as she doesn't mind her skin being ravaged by the sight, or tearing up her underwear. (Oh boy, the things you learn in research.)
My heroine will have to file her gun's sight down, and sew a pouch inside her jeans if she expects to carry a concealed weapon. And a concealed weapon in Martha's world is a must.

I took off the afternoon for a few reasons. My range pass expires until I take the RSO course so this was one of the last days I could go and not expect a lot of people there, as well as it is my birthday. So I'm going bowling tonight, doing something out of the ordinary that I haven't done for a birthday in Mt. Airy since I was a kid and doing some D&B action tomorrow to celebrate with my buddy Clint.
The range was completely empty, no one had been in a couple days, it was quite peaceful. I laid fresh tracks. Froze my ass off, and nailed some nice groupings.

Most narrow gauge lines in Ireland tended to be 3ft but this one at The Curragh is 2ft gauge. It was operated by the Irish Army No.1 Maintenance Company and its purpose was to carry plywood targets from the army base out onto the firing ranges. The line was thought to have opened some time around 1909 and for much of its early existance was either horse on man worked. In 1950 things came a bit more up to date with the arrival of the sole locomotive to date. The engine is a standard Simplex 'Motor Rail' (wks no.8970/1945) and was moved here from nearby Baldonnel Army base when it shut in 1950.
After negotiations with the Irish Army a small group of us were allowed to visit and travel on the line from the base out onto the ranges. All slightly un-nerving visit I recall on the day as we drew closer to the ranges with live firing but our driver assured us it was fine. (Thoughts of a one way trip on the premiss now you have seen it we will have to shoot you, LOL). Alas infomation on this line is hard to come by because of it's military location but I gather it is now out of use although the loco remains on site.
I found all this live ammo and broken plate mirror scattered around a dry lake bed in California and decided to make something pretty. Funny what seven days in the middle of the Mojave Desert does to you.

A 35 man (plus guides) trip to the Ukraine exploring Chernobyl, the village, Duga 3, Pripyat and Kiev including Maidan (Independence Square) and observing the peaceful protests underway.
Some new faces, some old, made new friends and generally we were in our elements.
Rhetorical question but did we have a blast? You bet!
Amazing group, top guys. Till the next time!

During the 2nd World War the Germans built a "gunrange" for their heavy artillery. These walls served as a silencer and as a means of stopping shots gone a stray. The walls are riddled with holes of reflecting the calibre hitting them. 8 of them standing up to 10 metres tall, and spaced evenly apart. They end inside a small sandfilled cave inside a small hill. via 500px bit.ly/1RG1d7O
