La cascada del oro y el cañón formado por el .río Hvítá, que significa río blanco

La rivière Hvítá se précipite dans une gorge étroite. Une des plus belle chute d'eau d'Islande.

Looking down on the massive waterfall called Gullfoss in Iceland. It is really hard to express just how impressive this place is ( plus loud, wet & cold!)

The waterfall Gullfoss, the most famous waterfall in Iceland. Read about it here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gullfoss

Biskupstungur, Iceland. 20.07.2014.

Gullfoss is a huge waterfall in Iceland. A bit like Kimberly, really really tall and really really wide - plunging dramatically over the final dop into a deep rift - you can't see the bottom for continuous spray. Pretty much impossible to get a decent vantage point to show the whole fall as access is now restricted. This view is looking down into the rift from the closest point on the path.

Ciel nuageux au dessus de la double cascade de Gullfoss précipitant les eaux de la rivière Hvítá une trentaine de mètres plus bas.

Continuing my cross-section of Iceland, this time, it's a waterfall's turn.

Shown is the Gullfoss, or rather, the first of its two cascades, being 11 m high. See the people on the left side for a size reference. While being there, we were blessed with sunshine, and a great rainbow.

The second part of the cascades will be shown later, it's quite impressive as well, as you can see with numerous pictures on flickr.

Gullfoss is part of the Golden Circle (like Þingvellir and Geysir) and as such easily accessible even from Reykjavik.

This picture was taken with the Nikkor 16-85/3.5-5.6 on my D300, mounted on a tripod. This way, I could take medium times without shaking, while long exposure times in conjunction with powerful waterfalls often takes away the, well, power of it. :) So, what you see here is 1/15 s.

If you are interested, feel free to check out my whole Iceland set at my homepage, or rather the current state it is in. My favorites from there will get here onto flickr. Yes, I take proposals. :)

Gullfoss, Iceland -

The mighty Gulfoss Falls in Iceland. What a sight ( and sound) they are. The Sun tried to come out over them for us :) Our time here Iceland is racing past!

Gullfoss Nature Preserve

They call it the "Land of Fire and Ice," but it really is the land of waterfalls!

Windy ..... Could barely stand! and cold in the late afternoon light. Stunning scenery!

On the river Hvítá, Waterfall Gullfoss

Gullfoss (Golden Falls) is in the canyon of the Hvítá river in southwest Iceland.

"Gullfoss - literally 'Golden Falls', is ... Iceland's most famous waterfall. And for good reason as it is amazing - comparable to Niagara in terms of size and power. It is part of the popular Golden Circle route, so it tends to be crowded with tourists... Gullfoss is actually two waterfalls, with the upper falls being 11 m high and the lower falls 20 m. Past Gullfoss, the river Hvítá runs through Gullfoss Gorge, which is 2.5 km long and 70 m deep. Gullfoss is fairly easy to get to for a day trip from Reykjavík, and really a must-do for anyone visiting Iceland. It is located in a protected Nature Reserve right off Route 35, just a few km past the "one-and-only" Geysir, which has given name to all *geysers* in the world (that is if English is your language). There are two parking lots. The lower one is closest to the gorge and has a great viewing spot of both tiers of the falls from a distance. Since it's so big, it's impossible to see the whole thing close up. A trail from [the lower lot] runs along the gorge to the falls where the rock outcrop [see photo] sticking out in between the two tiers of the falls provides another viewing spot that allows visitors to get an up-close view of the power of the falls. Be warned that you will get wet. There is a lot of mist from the falls, but it's definitely worth it to get a good view. Also, be careful as the rocks on the outcrop will be wet and slippery. The upper parking lot has a gift shop, restaurant, and restrooms[/toilets] as well as an upper trail with two more viewing spots of the falls. If you visit on a sunny day, you may be lucky enough to see a rainbow."

Another image of the fantastic waterfall at Gullfoss in Iceland. A relatively quiet moment without any other visitors around.
