Hodka village - Harijan or Meghwal tribal people.
The name Harijan was given by Mahatma Gandhi to the Meghwal people. Hari means God and Jan means People. Meghwals are originally from Marwar in Rajasthan. They are experts in weaving wool and cotton and make attractive leather embroidery and wood carving.
Meghwals live all over Kutch. They always live in groups outside the village. Their houses are very clean and decorated by cowdung mud and mirrors. The men do leather work, wood carving and women do embroidery and patchwork. They live close to the Muslim families. They often borrow embroidery patterns and techniques from Muslim neighbours. They worship Ramdevpir.

Rogan painting by Khatri people.
ROGAN painting, a traditional form of painting, could well be on its last leg. There is only one family in Nirona, a village 20 km from Bhuj in Gujarat, that is involved in the craft. Rogan involves painting with a thin metal rod, which is dipped into paint made by boiling castor oil over three days with earth colours from stones. Most of the designs are geometrical in shape in varying colours. "We usually do this work only on cotton or silk because these fabrics are appreciated," says Khatri. A one-foot square piece of cloth takes at least two-three days of work, and the time spent could vary depending on the intricacy of the design. The art, according to him, must be at least 450-500 years old, though there is no historical evidence. "It came from Persia. There were artisans in Pakistan, too, but today only our family members continue to practise it," says Khatri.
Khatri believes that rogan painting has undergone several changes over the years. "Earlier, we worked on black or red cloth, primarily for tablecloth. Now we have extended our work to other colours and diversified to other uses — cushion cover, wall pieces, scarves, stoles and sarees," says Khatri. The last seven generations of Khatri's family have been involved in this artwork.

Firoze used to sell his stuff on a charpoy outside a closed shop on Fridays..Friday is the weekly off for the Chor Bazar shops when guys like Firoze display their stuff and sell.. they buy too , mostly from the Kamatipura Vanjaris .
The money is good as everything that seems like useless junk also sells , the stuff in great demand is old Leica cameras , Rolex watches old paintings , old photographs and miniature works of art .
Most of the stuff comes from old Parsi homes , and in brand new condition.. old gramophones , speakers music systems , you name it they have it ,, a lot of people in this market have become millionaires travel to Europe Italy Belgium to meet international buyers .
The main Muslim community in this trade are Gujrati origin Mansuri Muslims .. a close knit community of businessmen entrepreneurs traders .
The Friday Chor Bazar flea market starts very early before 5 am with a break for Friday namaz and the roadside vendors leave when it turns dark during Maghrib.
You can get old coins old money medallions , even stuff that is banned , a lot of stolen stuff like designer shoes stolen from wedding halls mosques mandirs comes to another flea market of Shoes at Kamatipura called Dedh Gully .
I have stopped going to both Chor Bazar and Kamatipura flea market since almost 5 to 6 years now.
But if you get hooked to this market it is addictive , habit forming , I collected old cameras and shot street mugs so it was pretty good till it lasted ,, my used to call me a Junkie as she thought I simply collected junk adding to the junk at home ..
So these are old memories , some idyllic nostalgia ,,, I had some great times here I was well known infamously because of my attire and my barefeet ..and the jewelry I wore on my person.

I knew Nasir Bhai Rafaee as I met him doing Ratib at Sandal of Haji Malang in 2010 I shot pictures of his boys from Dongri doing Zarb.
Ratib Zarb self infliction without bleeding is an integral part of Ahmed Kabeers Rafaee Silsila founded by him and patronzd by Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani Ghaus Pak.
Jointly this widespread Sufi Order is also known as Qadri Rafaee Silsila.
In Gujrat it has the ultimate patronage blessings of Kamaluddin Baba Jamaluddin Baba and Nayar Baba.. And most of the Gujrati Muslims that adhere to Sufism follow the Qadri Rafaee Silsila.
After meeting Nasirbhai Rafaee Dongri in December 2017 I began documenting the Qadri Rafaee Silsila as a separate set on my Sufism 2 set at Flickr. Com.
Nasir Bhai is assisted by Chote Nasir both of them with their group perform Ratib at various Qadri dargahs.
The main Qadri Rafaee Dargah is over 230 years old opposite the Ismail Khoja Kabrastan Dargah Hisamuddin Baba Aminullah Al Rafaee this is the citadel of the citadel of this Sufi Order.
I as a child remember this Sufi Dargah though I entered it first time in 2017 my Mother and I would pass this Dargah when she took me to Pala Gully to the only Dargah she visited in her life Dargah of Hazrat Abbas.
I come from a Shia background and the first Sufi Dargah I visited was Bahuddin Shah baba as my childhood friend was a Pathan Fazal Khan.
Later I moved to Muscat for 2 years and on my return was totally cut off from this Dargah at Marine Lines.
But about 20 years back it was a friend Fahad Pathan I met at ChorBazar his father was the Imam of Makhdhoom Shah Baba Mahim.
He invited me to his house at the Dargah his father was a holistic healer too with a large following liked me and I was close to him till his untimely death.
Fahad introduced me to the Chand Shah Wali Rafaees who had their Dhuni behind the Dargah only during Urus time.
I was curious about them and decided to shoot this order as a photpgraphy feature it was never a spirituality decision I was happy following the faith I had been born into..
Fahad introduced me to another guy Shakib Ahmed Siddiqi Mahimi and it was Shakib who really introduced me to Sufism I had never been to Ajmer in my life I met Peersab Fakhru Miya Hujra no 6 in 2004 in Mumbai and he invited me to Ajmer Urus.
So now I was documenting Rafaee Bawas Chishtiya Silsila.
I shot Ajmer Chishtiya Silsila for 12 years and this year I did not go for the Urus due to film work comittments.
I missed most of all walking with the malangs Chadiyan I had documented this walk last year with Mustakim Baba Masumi Madari thanks to Rafiq Ali Rafiq Ali.
I met the Dam Madar Malangs in 2005 got introduced to Syed Masoom Ali Baba Asqan Madari began documenting the MadarriyaSilsila.
I accidentally more as a documentarist became the Murid of Masoom Ali Baba drank the Pyala in 2011 and visited Makanpur Shrine of Zinda Shah Madar in 2013 and in 2017 Syed Masoom Ali Baba made me his Khalifa.
So this brief history is for those who added me recently.. With Nasir Bhai Rafaee I have got the opportunity of documenting the Qadri Rafaee Silsila.
And my trip to Ratnapore Urus of Baba Gor made me seriously shoot the Siddi Ethos of Gujrat showcase their life struggle as a human story without any commercial angle or without seeking fame.
I am a hobbyist photographer.. I hope the few Siddis on my Facebook timeline help me shoot their Race..
I shoot my own faith Shiasm mostly during Moharam Ashura Chehlum or Athvi.
I shoot Hinduism but mostly Kumbh Melas NagaSadhus .My late Guru was a NagaSadhu .
My other documentary is on Aghoris and Khamakhya is the place I go to shoot it last two years.
I am documenting Tantrics too.
My oldest documentary is on Hijras Transgender and it is disabled from public view.
And it was Maha Mandleshwar Guru Laxmi Narayan Tripathi who blessed and inspired me to take up this daunting documentary of Hijra life struggle.

The Ahir are descendants of Lord Krishna. They lived as shepherds at Gokul Mathura about a thousand years ago. After leaving Gokul Mathura they spread throughout northern and northwestern India. There are four types of Ahir tribals namely Prantharia, Machhoya, Boureecha and Sorathia.
These communities are mainly of farmers who once sold milk and ghee but who now have changed their business to transport or salt because of the irregularity of rain. Their mother tongue is Gujarati. They worship Ramdevpir.
The engagement of an Ahir girl is formalized when the groom`s parents present a gift to the bride`s family. The Prantharia Ahirs give money. Machhoya and Boureecha give sets of clothes decorated with mirror work embroidery. The bride`s relatives also contribute at least one silver necklace, one or two gold necklaces, earrings, nose pins, anklets and bracelets.
The costume of an Ahir woman indicates her Jati and her age. Young women have the most elaborate costumes. Their gathered skirts of red, green, blue, orange or brown tied and dyed cotton are richly embroidered. Older married women must be content with plain black cotton tube shirts and simple decorated cotton or plain mashru blouses in subdued colours. Young and middle aged women wear Odhanis of red and block striped mashru with embroidered border.
The Ahir are a caste of cowherds, milkers, and cattle breeders widely dispersed across the Gangetic Plain, especially in the more easternly part (Bihar, Bengal, and eastern Madhya Pradesh). The Ahir must number well over a million today: they numbered 750,000 in the Central Provinces and Berar in 1911, ranking as the sixth-largest caste in terms of numbers. In many castes there is a separate division of Ahirs, such as the Ahir Sunars, Sutars, Lohars, Shimpis, Salic, Guraos, and Kolis. The name "Ahir" is derived from "Abhira," a tribe mentioned several times in inscriptions and the Hindu sacred books. "Goala," meaning a cowherd or "a protector of cows," is the Bengali name for the caste, and the term "Gaoli" is now used in Madhya Pradesh State to signify a dairy worker.
Some dialects named after the Abhira or Ahirs are still spoken. One, known as Ahirwati, is spoken in the Rohtals and Gurgaon districts, the Punjab, and near Delhi. The Malwi dialect of Rajasthani is also known as Ahiri; there is a dialect of Gujarati called Khandeshi, also known as Ahirani. These linguistic survivals are an indication that the Ahirs were early settlers in the Delhi country of the Punjab, and in Malwa and Khandesh.
The Ahir were apparently one of the immigrant tribes from central Asia who entered India during the early Christian era. The Ahir have been for centuries a purely occupational caste, mainly recruited from the indigenous tribes. As cattle must graze in the forest during hot weather, there is a close relationship between Ahirs and many of the forest tribes. Many Ahir in Mandla, for example, are barely considered Hindus, because they live in Gond villages (a forest tribe).
Only about 30 percent of the Ahirs are still occupied in breeding cattle and dealing in milk and butter. About 4 percent are domestic servants, and nearly all the remainder were cultivators and laborers in 1931. Formerly the Ahirs had the exclusive right to milk cows, so that on all occasions an Ahir had to be hired for this purpose even by the lowest caste.
The caste has exogamous sections, which are of the usual low-caste type, with titular or totemistic names. The marriage of persons belonging to the same section and of first cousins is prohibited. A man may marry his wife's younger sister while his wife is living. The practice of exchanging girls between families is permissible.
The Ahir have a special relation to the Hindu religion, owing to their association with the sacred cow, which is itself revered as a goddess. Among the special deities of the Ahirs is Kharsk Deo, who is always located at the place of assembly of the cattle. Mater Deo is the god of the pen. A favorite saint is Haridas Baba. The main festival is the Diwali, falling about the beginning of November. All people observe this feast by illuminating their houses with many small saucer-lamps and with fireworks

The Sodha Rajputs are said to be descended from Paramara Sodha, are supposed to have come into this part of Sindh from Ujjain about 1226, when they quickly displaced the rulers of the country. Other authorities, however, state that they did not conquer the country from the Sumras, the dominant race, before the beginning of the sixteenth century. The Sodhas, in their turn, succumbed to the Kalhoras about 1750.
Rana Prasad, a Hindu Sodha Rajput ruler of Amarkot, gave refuge to the Mughal Emperor Humayun. The Sodha controlled Umarkot Fort was where the great Mughal Emperor, Akbar was born in Umerkot, when his father Humayun fled from military defeat at the hands of Sher Shah Suri.
Rana Chandra Singh belonged to the Sodha Rajput clan, and was the Rana (chieftain) of the Amarkot (Umerkot) jagir, a Rajput state in Pakistan, and Pakistani Hindu Sodha Thakur Rajput. His father was Rana Arjun Singh and his mother was Dev Kumari. Arjun Singh was Rana of Umarkot in 1947 when the state became part of Pakistan

The East Indians are close knit community and very peaceful they stay on their side of the fence most of my friends at Bandra Bazar are East Indians ..
I love their pickles bottle masalas dry masala bombils ..and I buy al this from my bum chum buddy Ollie .
Ollie is not yet married no luck he says we spread the word around I also paid a poor lady some money to light a candle every Sunday at Mount Mary so my friend does get a beautiful woman..and he goes wild when I tell him he should marry a nice Muslim woman in a hijab but than he gets annoyed he says people will calll him Ollie Miya lol ..I give him options a Parsi or even a Gujrati Kathiwari.. but Ollie my best East Indian friend is stuck without a woman.. he is a good man a great cook a fabulous dancer drinks only on feasts days but fuck no luck..
I thought of taking a tawiz from a bawa the next time I go to Dongri..but one of the reasons I am told Ollie is not getting a woman of his dreams because he wants a woman with a nice old time bunglow a vintage car and good music..

Ahir woman in Dhaneti town.
The Ahir are descendants of Lord Krishna. They lived as shepherds at Gokul Mathura about a thousand years ago. After leaving Gokul Mathura they spread throughout northern and northwestern India. There are four types of Ahir tribals namely Prantharia, Machhoya, Boureecha and Sorathia.
These communities are mainly of farmers who once sold milk and ghee but who now have changed their business to transport or salt because of the irregularity of rain. Their mother tongue is Gujarati. They worship Ramdevpir.
The engagement of an Ahir girl is formalized when the groom`s parents present a gift to the bride`s family. The Prantharia Ahirs give money. Machhoya and Boureecha give sets of clothes decorated with mirror work embroidery. The bride`s relatives also contribute at least one silver necklace, one or two gold necklaces, earrings, nose pins, anklets and bracelets.
The costume of an Ahir woman indicates her Jati and her age. Young women have the most elaborate costumes. Their gathered skirts of red, green, blue, orange or brown tied and dyed cotton are richly embroidered. Older married women must be content with plain black cotton tube shirts and simple decorated cotton or plain mashru blouses in subdued colours. Young and middle aged women wear Odhanis of red and block striped mashru with embroidered border.
The Koli community is found throughout India. Kolis are found in Maharashtra, Gujrat, AndhraPradesh and rest of India. In Maharashtra they are found in the coastal regions of Maharashtra. They are also one of the original inhabitants of Mumbai, then known as Bombay islands.
In Maharashtra the Kolis almost exclusively speak Marathi language, though some Koli communities speak a variant dialect of Marathi. The Kolis of Mumbai are dispersed all over the city, especially along the western coast of the city. The Kolis of Vasai are Hindu and Christian, though both belong to the Marathi ethnic group. The community has several subcastes , the prominent ones are Koli kolis, Mangela Kolis, Vaity kolis,Christian Kolis, Mahadeo kolis, Suryawanshi kolis.
The name is possibly derived from the Marathi word "Koli", which means a spider (one who spins a web - in Marathi that translates to 'one who weaves a net', and hence the fisherman, who weaves the net, is also called a Koli).
In 1901 the number of Kolis in all India was returned as nearly 3.75 million, but this total includes a distinct weaving caste of Kolis or Koris in northern India.
The estimate of Koli population in Gujarat is based on 1931 enumeration which is the last time caste based enumeration was taken in India.

Kolis from around Mumbai worship the goddess Ekveera situated at the Karla caves, Malavli, Lonavla. This goddess is worshipped the most on Chaitra Purnima (15th day of first month in the Marathi calendar.
When Bombay was a dumbbell-shaped combination of 7 islands tapering, at the centre, to a narrow shining strand beyond which could be seen the finest and largest natural harbour in Asia. "Midnight's Children", Kolbhat, Palva Bunder, Dongri, Mazagaon, Naigaum and Worli were among the islands the Kolis gave their names to. Kolbhat was distorted to Colaba; Palva Bunder became Apollo Bunder. The temple to Mumbadevi in Dongri gave rise to the name of the city. One of the smaller islands near Colaba, variously called Old Man's Island and Old Woman's Island, was a distortion of the Arab name Al-Omani, given for the same fishermen who ranged as far away as the gulf of Oman.
The development of the modern city slowly marginalised these people of the sea. They were removed from Dongri already in 1770 by the East India Company. This historical process of elimination eventually pushed them to the strand near Cuffe Parade, from where they plied their ancient trade of deep water fishing. The Backbay reclamation of the 60's would have further marginalised them had they not approached the courts to stay the reclamation. Now their settlements are protected by law. The places where the koli communities places called Koliwada. You will find these koliwadas from mumbai city to its suburbs. There is also a railway station called Koliwada on central railway horbour line route, which name replaced with Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar for migratory population of sikhs from borders of India, though ther was a strong agitation made by this people but government overlooked it as the strong vote bank was seen by the existing Indira Gandhi Govt. Also the fishing mangroves named Ravali, Sheikh mestri are dumped now for migratory population in the city and the largest village Koliwada (Sheev) on border of city had become a property of Municipal corporation after BIT takeover there land. These Chawls known as NSP sheds are under SRA are broken for redevelopment of city, These are same people known for Bokshi business where women also does fishing with men whch is resembled in old folk song "Lay Lay Lay Lay Layenkarni, Bokshila Jaataan Sheevkarni" Sheevkarni means fisherwomen of Sheev or Sion Koliwada village. No support to these people only on paper conservation of these adivasi mulnivasi tribes are done but sky crappers are built from all sides of this chawls system.
Kolis are same who fought for joining Maharashtra when Gujrati population wanted it to be with Gujrat as a material gain and business prospects for which more than 160 peoples lost there life in for agitation against it.
In Marathi, Koli means the originally heterogeneous marginal tribe-castes that took late in history to agriculture and were often press-ganged for porterage in army service. The same word also means spider and fisherman, presumably because the fisherman makes and uses a net to catch his prey as a spider his web.

The koli community has its own distinct identity and lively dances. The dance incorporates elements that this community is most familiar with - sea and fishing. The dance is performed by both men and women divided into two groups, where fishermen stand in two rows holding oars in their hands. The dancers move in unison, portraying the movement of the rowing of a boat. Fisherwomen are in the opposite rows with their arms linked and advancing towards men folk. The separate formation then break up and they dance together with movements symbolizing the waves, the breakers and rowing from cliff to cliff and casting of nets to catch the fish.

Now a days Meghwal community live in big and small cities of Gujarat.Mostly in Saurashtra region of Gujarat State. Many people living in Mumbai also.Their main Profession was weaving fabrique specially KHADI.Now a days because of education Most of doing various Government jobs in cities and in villages they are doing labour work in agriculture.Most of Meghwal People living in Bhavnagar District of Gujarat.
They live mostly in small hamlets of round, mud-brick huts painted on the outside with colourful geometric designs and decorated with detailed mirror inlays. The women are famous for their embroidery work and are master wool and cotton weavers. The men are woodcarvers and leather workers. Meghwals are considered as most peaceful among all the tribes living in Gujarat, Sindh, Rajasthan, Punjab.
The Meghwal women are renowned for their exuberantly detailed costumes and jewellery. Married Meghwal women are often spotted wearing gold nose ring, earrings and neckpieces. They were given to the bride as a "bride wealth" dowry by her soon-to-be husband's mother. Nose rings and earrings are often decorated with precious stones of ruby, sapphire and emerald. meghwars are the follower of "pir pithoro" his shrine is near mirpur khas in pithoro village.
