Since the first time I shot the Siddi performers on the street leading to the Shrine of Makhdhoom Shah Baba also known as Kutbe Konkan at Mahim..I was fascinated by them and this was a chance meeting with the Siddis 20 years back.
I would meet them dance with them with both my two left legs but to my bad luck the ones I met were insular distant and introverted ,,, they were not friendly at all ..I dont blame them as they did not know my intentions my overtly sartorial outlandishness .
I dont speak Gujrati or I could have connected with them..
Years passed and though living in Bandra for over 30 years I did not know that they had a dargah at Dongri a replica known as Chilla of their patron Siddi Saint Baba Gor or as they call him Bavagor ..
I discovered this dargah recently or rather last year when I began documenting the Qadri Rafae Silsila inspired by my mentor Nasir bhai Norein Rafaee exponent of Ratib.
I went to BavaGors chilla and met the mujawir Rauf Makwa who turned out to be an old friend I had shot him at Haji Malang Dargah Siddi Chowk.. he told me about the original dargah at Ratnapore near Bharuch.
And I asked almost all my malang friends qadri rafaee friends none were aware of the date of the Urus of BavaGor ,,
I decided I would go and shoot it within the ocean of my soul the waves were lashing out the chant of Gor Gor Bava Gor ..
I left Mumbai on 27 March thanks to Sakil Sidi Sakil Sidi I got a room in a hotel 10 km away and I began shooting the Black Sufis
I shot with the vision of a poet which is million light years ahead of the vision of a photographer ,,I shot their hope their dreams their aspirations ..
Time was short and on the actual day of the dhamal it was so crowded that I could not shoot their Goma ..but I shot a few videos images to grasp the mystique of the Siddis .
I made friend thy promised to stay in touch some did but on the whole Siddis are not very sacred about new relationships with outsiders this is my personal estimation ..
I found many did not respond to my calls and I could not understand this the only person who kept me informed of the Urus of Bava Gor Dongri was Altaf Pappu and a post by
Sidi Mohammed Saboo Siddique on Facebook ,
Nobody informed me about the Null Bazar event thought I shot the Gusul and the Sandal halfway ,, I was too tired and disappointed in the Sandal there were just a few Siddis the Goma performers and Rauf Makwa Mujawir his son Razzak .
So this is my humble request to my Siddi friends on my timeline do invite me if you can..not for money not for fame I want to build the largest library online of Sddi images Siddi videos Siddi culture and most of all do invite me to a Siddi wedding in Jamnagar or Junagadh .

The Mir clan originates from the Kashmir Valley. Its origin is from the Butt tribe. Its fellow tribesmen are the Butt, Dar, Lone, Khawaja and Malik clans.
The mosaic of ethnic groups in Kashmir is complex and the race structure cannot be explained without understanding the pre-historic movements of people. The racial composition of the province was also influenced by waves of immigrants from the Central Asia and Middle East.

En 1297, Alaudín, Sultán de Delhi, incorporó Gujarat al sultanato. A finales del siglo XIV, Gujarat se convirtió de nuevo en un reino independiente con capital en Ahmedabad. En 1576 el emperador mogol Akbar conquistó la región y la incorporó a su imperio. Siguió formando parte del imperio mogol hasta el siglo XVIII en que su gobierno quedó dividido en diversos jefes locales.
Portugal fue la primera potencia europea en llegar a Gujarat, adquiriendo diversos enclaves a lo largo de la costa; enclaves que incluían Damán y Diu así como Dadra y Nagar Haveli. La compañía Británica de las Indias Orientales estableció una fábrica en Surat en 1614 que se convirtió en su primera base en la India. Estuvo eclipsada por Bombay después de que los británicos la adquirieran en 1668.
Entre 1818 y 1947, Gujarat quedó dividido en numerosos estados principescos, gobernados por jefes locales bajo control británico. El 1 de mayo de 1960 Gujarat se convirtió en un estado de la India. La capital se estableció en Ahmedabad pero en 1970 se trasladó a la ciudad de Gandhinagar.
El 26 de enero de 2001 un devastador terremoto asoló la zona de Gujarat. El resultado fue de más de 20.000 muertos, otros 200.000 heridos y más de 40 millones de afectados. Las pérdidas económicas fueron así mismo muy cuantiosas.

Normally after I have finished playing tennis and walked a few rounds at the MET Grounds Bandra Reclamation I return home not via the Beef Market but through a tiny access lane near the Sunni Mosque Bandra Reclamation ,. that houses a few Miya caterers and just across their space is her house ,, I have shot her earlier from a distant she would be sulking silently grumbling and she looked very temperamental as I dont know her I thought shooting from far was the best way of shooting her street personality ,,
But yesterday that is when I shot this picture I said hello to her and before she could re act I shot her on my HTC Desire 826 and this took her by surprise she gave me her beatific smile surprising me completely ,,
She is a Kathiawari migrant , settler from Gujrat the oldest settlers here at Bandra Bazar Road when this entire place was part of the sea ,, dhobhi ghat ,,the dhobis the gujratis the koli fisherfolks the East Indians also fisherfolks lived cheek and jowl.. much before we came to Bandra in the 80 s ,,
This part of Bandra the backlanes arterial touch main Bandra Bazar Road a commune of the erstwhile East Indians original inhabitants of this part of Bandra .. their communes were called gaothan , very specific , culturally dominating the early simple skyline without tall ugly monstrous sky scrapers ..
There are a handful of old Kathiawari families and you will see them come together during Navratri ..playing dandia at Highland Court A and B in front of their old deity Goddess Ma Ambe ,, she is kept in a Kathiwari house made of metal she is a family heirloom never immersed like the other idols.
And so you shoot a picture and prolifically capture the thread of a story a thread that weaves a tapestry of cultures living peacefully side by side ,,with the Konkani Muslim migrants that came settled in Bandra Bazar ..the Karie community , one of them was a cook for the family of Bhuttos living in Old Mumbai ,, and they wanted him and his family to relocate to Pakistan but they loved Bandra far too much.. and the patron of this family died recently ,,I shot both him and his wife for a long time documenting their simplicity and humility and there is an old Chinese family too ,, all woven together in the ethos of Bandra Bazar Road ,, the area we decided to make our home ,,my wife liked this place to its proximity to the Shia Khoja Mosque , the ladies Shia mehfil the bazar and my daughters school Apostolic Carmel Convent ,,and for sometime my workspace too.
So one holy smile opens a can full of smiles ,,, lol
