(Chapter 3: Tommy ChillFigure '77)
Even though it took Tommy some time to overcome his grief for the loss of Poppy, whom we never saw again, he continued to be his handsome dashing adventurous self for many more years. Quite frankly, he was the original Tommy ChillFigure, eight years before Tommy Hilfiger was established as a brand.
During my first trip home from my first days living in a hostel, at Aitchison College, Lahore, I took this photo of Tommy, as he confidently sat on the rooftop of the Jeep Wrangler. This was at the Executive Engineer Irrigation's residence in Canal Colony, Gujrat, in Punjab, Pakistan. Aging gracefully as my siblings and I were becoming youths. Thanks to my sister for finding this stuck in an old photos album, so it cannot be removed and scanned.
Tommy was getting old but still active, if not hyperactive with the zooming around energy of a puppy when the family would return even from a day trip somewhere. He would literally run so fast that his white fur, flying like the mane of an Arabian horse, would look like a white flame whizzing around in a Marvel movie. Unfortunately, all beautiful stories of a dog's life must come to an end. Sadly, history repeated itself, this time in a different town.
My parents were posted to a different city by then. Tommy, about 15 years old by then, got attacked by a stray dog who literally opened a gash in his throat. Veterinary care to deal with something that severe was not available and it was clear that Tommy would not make it. He was still so stoic, so calm, that our late beloved father, despite an iron will, who had always been a gun owner, could not bring himself to put Tommy down.
I was living in Lahore by that time but I am sure I would not have been able to do it either. My brother, a doctor, who also happens to now be in law enforcement, had to do the painful duty. Everyone comforted Tommy, he drank some water, not complaining, but it was clear it had to be done quickly. A single bullet to the back of the head ended Tommy's beautiful journey and his temporary pain. But it also brought an incredible loss so severe that none of us, even decades later, can talk about it, or type about it, as I am typing now, and not have tears well up, as are rolling down my cheeks now.
Dogs connect with us in such a way that even within three months of having Kennedy the thought of losing him was tough for me. Imagine having a dog for 15 years, as Tommy and we siblings grew from children into youth, and in his case to old age. That long a time makes it still feel like a loss of a family member, even now. By the time we said Good Bye, Tommy had been with us so long that he was our first and perhaps only dog that each and every one of the family considered a member of the family.
Ride on, atop the roof of your cloud-mobiles, TOMMY!

Sabarmati Ashram, Ahmedabad, Gujrat
Sabarmati Ashram, formerly known as 'Satyagraha Ashram", situated in Ahmedabad at the Kocharab Bungalow of Jivanlal Desai, a barrister. Later on it was shifted to the banks of Sabarmati river and then it came to be known as 'Sabarmati Ashram'. Gandhi stayed at the Ashram from 1915 to 1933 later on the Ashram was disbanded. The Ashram is a witness to many important historical events.
"This is the right place for our activities to carry on the search for Truth and develop Fearlessness- for on one side, are the iron bolts of the foreigners, and on the other, thunderbolts of Mother Nature".- This is how Gandhiji described the site of Sabarmati
Ashram when he first visited the place for assessing if it was suitable for carrying out his work.
The site of 36 acres was a waste land full of snakes, but the order was not to kill them.
The Satyagraha Ashram, later renamed as Harijan Ashram, was started in all earnest with a two-fold purpose- one was to carry on the search for Truth, and the other was to create a non-violent group of workers, who would organize and help to secure freedom for the country.
