I brought this photo forward today, for the day that was in it, a sad day in music world, the death of S Club 7 star Paul Cattermole who died at the age of 46.

In a world of sugar pop of the 90's, its wasn't all glamour & riches.

Norman Rockwell illustrated eight covers for Top Value Stamps between 1966 and 1973, and this one from 1966 likely marked the beginning of that collaboration. Trading stamps were a wildly popular loyalty program in twentieth-century America. Retailers (grocery stores, gas stations, department stores) bought stamps from companies like S&H Green Stamps or Top Value Stamps. Customers received stamps based on how much they spent—typically 10 stamps (or one 10-point stamp) per dollar. Shoppers pasted the stamps into booklets, each holding around 1,200 points. Once filled, booklets could be redeemed for merchandise from catalogs or redemption centers.

You could get everything from toasters and towels to bicycles, furniture, and even pets. In 1966, Pennsylvania schoolchildren famously redeemed 5.4 million stamps for a pair of gorillas—one went to the Pittsburgh Zoo. By the 1960s, S&H Green Stamps printed more stamps than the U.S. Postal Service, and their catalogs were among the most widely distributed publications in the country. They were referenced in songs, movies, and even used by Andy Warhol in his art.

[Note: While S&H (Sperry & Hutchinson) did not manufacture the stamps themselves, the company did have its own printing facility and large distribution and redemption centers. Some of these facilities are still standing, though they are no longer in use by S&H.]
