655 Stockton Street is a notable building located in San Francisco's Nob Hill neighborhood, an area renowned for its historical and architectural significance. This address is home to the Ritz-Carlton San Francisco, a luxurious hotel that blends classic elegance with modern amenities. Originally built in 1909 as the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company headquarters, the building's Beaux-Arts architecture reflects the opulence of early 20th-century design.
Politically, 655 Stockton Street holds significance due to its location in a district known for hosting influential figures and events. The Nob Hill area has historically been a residential and social hub for San Francisco's elite, including politicians and business magnates. The Ritz-Carlton has frequently served as a venue for high-profile political fundraisers, meetings, and events, drawing national and international attention.
Additionally, the building's preservation and adaptive reuse as a luxury hotel reflect broader political and civic efforts in San Francisco to maintain the city's historical heritage while promoting tourism and economic development. These efforts highlight the ongoing dialogue between development and conservation in urban planning policies.
My wife and I celebrated our 50th anniversary with a wonderful Rocky Mountaineer train trip from Vancouver to Lake Louise and back the week of May 5-11, 2019. We flew from Phoenix to Seattle, bused to the Pacific Central Station and Fairmont Waterfront hotel in Vancouver and then boarded the Rocky mountaineer train early the next morning. The mountains, sights, food and luxurious service all made for the most wonderful trip we ever made. The Lake Louise Chateau was especially elegant. We enjoyed the resort for a full day mid-week. We returned from Vancouver to Seattle on the Amtrak costal route train.
The natural areas around the hotel were incorporated into Banff National Park, which has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Trail head path to the Tea House The Chateau Bell Captain assigned a Bell Man to take me t a beautiful room on the top 8th floor. It was a two story room with the bedroom on the second floor with an outside balcony. I had my Nikon P1000 DLSR camera with me. The bell man pointed out three buildings that were very difficult to see with the naked eye.
The Tea room pictured here was on the right side of the lake about 1 ½ miles up a snowy trail. You can enjoy spectacular views of Lake Louise and the Victoria Glacier while sip[ping on tea The Afternoon Tea menu includes gluten, meat products, eggs & dairy.

I am glad we opted to spend a full day in the Lake Louise Chateau. It gave us an opportunity to enjoy their restaurants and to photograph the surroundings. The Chateau has many beautiful chandeliers, sculptures, paintings, stained glass, taxidermy, bannisters and elaborate woodwork.
Photos were taken with a Nikon P1000 and an IPhone 8. It is tricky trying to get a good shot on a moving train contending with rapid changes in scenery, telegraph lines and a lot of reflections and a shaded glass roof. Most images are simple snapshots. I composed it for memories sake rather than trying to achieve high quality photography. Nevertheless I did learn a few tricks such as holding the IPhone flush with the glass windows, something you would never dare to do with a DSLR lens.

The Chateau Lake Louise holds seven dining options within the hotel. This includes Fairview, Lakeview Lounge, The Wallister Stube, The Chateau Deli, Poppy Brasserie, the Alpine Social (formerly the Glacier Saloon), and the seasonal Italian cuisine kitchen Lago (usually opened regularly during summer).

Obviously this photo was not taken by me. It was taken by Geoff Reed, an affiliate professional photographer of the Harley Bonham agency that owns the copyright. Harvey granted me written permission to make copies and I did all the Photoshop work on all the raw files of the event. My wife and I were very pleased with Geoff’s and Harley’s work and also Harley’s wife who handled all administrative matters. We posed for our 50th anniversary photos at the Hilton Squaw Pointe Resort in Phoenix on the weekend of April 5-8. Our anniversary is on April 7. Our son and 2 young grandsons were able to join us and enjoy all the water sports at the resort. I am very lucky to have a wonderful wife like Terry this past 50 years.

Ski Trails in site ot he Chateau. Originally built to function only in summer, the hotel was winterized in 1982 and now offers all the regular ski resort fare during the winter months. In addition to the usual skiing, ice skating and snowboarding, there are sleigh rides, ice sculpture contests and snowshoe excursions.

An outdoor lookout featured here was on the left side of Lake Louise a good distance from the balcony. It takes a hardy hiker to master the trail, especially in the winter months. The Fairview Lookout trail does have a few areas of grade to climb along the way, but it’s an easier option than the popular Lake Agnes Tea-house trail. Some people can find the tea house trail a bit strenuous due to the large amount of elevation gain over a such a short distance. From the Fairview Lookout you get a fantastic view overlooking the lake and back towards the Chateau Lake Louise hotel. You don’t actually get this view when climbing the tea house trail because there are too many trees in the way

This structure is a roofed open outdoor shelter very high on the Chateau view right side dome overlooking Lake Louise. It was the greatest distance from the balcony but I managed to get a hand held shot with the Nikon P1000. It would have been difficult carrying a tripod up the spiral staircase in the room and I was not able to bring on due to train luggage restrictions.

The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is a Fairmont hotel on the eastern shore of Lake Louise, near Banff, Alberta. The original hotel was gradually developed at the turn of the 20th century by the Canadian Pacific Railway and was thus "kin" to its predecessors, the Banff Springs Hotel and the Château Frontenac. The hotel's wooden Rattenbury Wing was destroyed by fire on 3 July 1924, and was replaced by the current Barrot Wing one year later. The Painter Wing, built in 1913, is the oldest existing portion of the hotel. The Mount Temple Wing, opened in 2004, is the most recent wing and features modern function facilities; these include the Mount Temple Ballroom

The Canadian Rockies or Canadian Rocky Mountains comprise the Canadian segment of the North American Rocky Mountains. They are the eastern part of the Canadian Cordillera, which is a system of multiple ranges of mountains which runs from the Canadian Prairies to the Pacific Coast. The Canadian Rockies mountain system comprises the southeastern part of this system, lying between the Interior Plains of Alberta and northeastern British Columbia on the east to the Rocky Mountain Trench of BC on the west. The southern end borders Idaho and Montana of the United States. In geographic terms, the boundary is at the Canada–United States border, but in geological terms it might be considered to be at Marias Pass in northern Montana. The northern end is at the Liard River in northern British Columbia.
The Canadian Rockies have numerous high peaks and ranges, such as Mount Robson (3,954 m, 12,972 ft) and Mount Columbia (3,747 m, 12,293 ft). The Canadian Rockies are composed of shale and limestone. Much of the range is protected by national and provincial parks, several of which collectively comprise a World Heritage Site.

We had to wait a few times to give priority to freight trains that were sharing the tracks. Nobody seemed to mind. We were in no hurry and he wine, food and storytelling never really stopped. The Freight Train Riders of America (FTRA) is a supposed group of Americans who move about by freight hopping ("catching out") in railroad cars, particularly in the northwestern United States and southwestern Canada, and have sometimes been linked to crimes and train derailments.

My surname is Thompson. I was rather amazed and pleased to see how Canadians used the Thompson name frequently to identify locations, businesses, geographical features and on and on.
David Thompson (30 April 1770 – 10 February 1857) was a British-Canadian fur trader, surveyor, and map-maker, known to some native peoples as Koo-Koo-Sint or "the Stargazer." Over Thompson's career, he travelled some 90,000 kilometers (56,000 mi) across North America, mapping 4.9 million square kilometers (1.9 million square miles) of North America along the way. For this historic feat, Thompson has been described as the "greatest land geographer who ever lived
On 10 June 1799 at Île-à-la-Crosse, Thompson married Charlotte Small, a thirteen-year-old Métis daughter of Scottish fur trader Patrick Small and a Cree mother. Their marriage was formalized thirteen years later at the Scotch Presbyterian Church in Montreal on 30 October 1812. He and Charlotte had 13 (to maybe 16) children together; five of them were born before he left the fur trade. By the time of Thompson's death, the couple had been married 57 years, the longest marriage known in Canada pre-Confederation

We returned from Vancouver to Seattle on the Amtrak costal route train.

This Scottish gentleman was one of the most interesting people we met aboard the train. He is a prominent member of the Scottish National Archers Association and he had a wonderful tale to tell about his hat. Archers shoot at a mockup of a pigeon with an old fashioned longbow. He called the target a papingo aka popinjay, pigeon or also parrot. Apparently it is very difficult to hit the mark, but the practice has been going on for hundreds of years. If you do connect, you get to wear an archery target symbol on your beret. I videotaped his story which is also available in my Flickr photo stream.
