People ask me why I take photos of LLVs. They're everywhere. While it is true that there are seemingly endless numbers of them still in use, they won't be around forever. They were produced from 1987 until 1994. The newest ones are 22 years old now. These won't be an everyday sight in years to come.
It's bad enough that the thermometer is hovering at 93, but now the 350 page John P's Great Outdoors catalogs have come out.
You think you could lug around all that weight in this heat?

The holiday season might be the shortest days of the year, but it's the most hectic for the unsung heroes of the USPS.

Tensions mount as the mailman makes the daily visit to the UPS hub.
Have you heard the joke about the company that delivers packages on time, to the correct address, without ever damaging the contents, or losing a shipment?
No?
I haven't either.

With his reputation for being protective, and less than friendly to visitors, you'd expect Pepper to go ballistic every time.
Turns out they get along famously, and the regular letter carrier is one of the few people that gets free reign around the compound.
When someone else has to fill in on his route... different story.

I wonder if FedEx would rather the snail mail came in an unmarked, non-de script van, with a plainclothes letter carrier?
I imagine they would go bonkers if someone shipped something to the hub with UPS...

These workhorses of the United States Post Office are known as the Grumman LLV's. There is a mixture of Grumman and GM parts in each one of these, and were originally built starting back in at least 1987. Yet they continue to chug along. I hear there are talks about replacing the entire fleet in phases since they are now nearing 30 years old. I'll miss seeing this link to the past if and when they are replaced someday.
Despite my love of duplicate diecast buying I rarely do the same when it comes to multi-sets. I'm not entirely sure why as often they contain some great models at good prices which I would buy more of if they were available as singles! Tesco have helped me slightly by offering some great new Matchbox five vehicle sets at prices which just can't be ignored.
They are currently selling these sets for just FOUR POUNDS EACH which equates to just over 66p each. Thats a bargain in anyones eyes hence a few of the MBX Countryside and indeed MBX Highway sets came home with me. That means a cheek few more plastic bodied Grumman LLV's added to my collection. Not technically a Grumman model but theres no doubt thats what its heavily based on. Nobody really likes to see a plastic body but this casting remains extremely crisp and well suited to its CarGo Couriers livery and chrome disc wheels. Mint and boxed.
This oddly proportioned but immensely charming little Matchbox van is technically a generic but is nothing more than a VERY thinly disguised Grumman LLV. The real vehicle has been out of production for a good few decades but I imagine there are still some parts of the U.S. where they are either still used or were until pretty recently.
Its been a while since I last saw this casting in the line up but it returns for very late 2019 in a new MBX Countryside five vehicle set. Sadly its body has succumbed to the dark plastic side though its baseplate is made of metal to balance things out. Its believable CarGo livery has already been seen before on other Matchbox castings and seems to suit this type of vehicle too. Found recently at Tesco. Mint and boxed.
Famine then feast really does sum up the Matchbox situation here in the UK due to the brand only being officially available through just one supermarket chain! After months of no stock all of a sudden we are now awash with brand new singles, UK Series, plus five and nine vehicle sets all of which are fresh assortments.
The City Adventure II set debuts at Tesco and includes the charming Grumman LLV based Postal Truck. Technically generic but clearly based on this most unusual looking vans and looking good in this new UMS livery. Plastic bodied with a metal baseplate. Mint and boxed.
A diminutive Canada Post mail van parked outside Dollar Blitz in the Merivale Market strip mall in the Ottawa suburb of Nepean.
I wasn't sure who made these vans. I thought it might have been Grumman like the larger vans, but then I had a close look at this photo and was rather surprised to see the Chevrolet logo on the hubcaps.
Doing a little research, I found this Adobe Acrobat pdf document from Transport Canada that calls this truck the "Canada Post Solectria-Grumman LLV Electric Postal Delivery Truck". So why does it have Chevy hubcaps, then?
Wikipedia has the answer. The body and final assembly is from Grumman, but General Motors builds the chassis.
Technically generic but there is no mistaking that this cute little van is very heavily based on a Grumman LLV. Originally built for American postal companies maybe any Americans on here can explain why in the land of the big everything, these vans were so tiny! Its not a Matchbox casting that I have many of at all and so was very happy to receive this Ghosts & Ghouls themed recolour which I believe originally dates back to 2006.

The engine compartment heater plug in cord is a very necessary feature in the winter months.
I'm not sure how much longer these will be around, I also spotted a new USPS M-B Metris van during my walk around the downtown area. However I was unable to get a photo.

The latest Matchbox MBX City Drivers five vehicle sets are now hitting Tesco stores and due to them still being excellent value and the fact this particular assortment has some real goodies contained within I did buy a few of them.
Technically this is the only "generic" in this pack but as many of us already know, this casting is really just a lightly disguised American Grumman LLV.
Mint and boxed.
STILL no new Matchbox singles in my nearest two Tesco stores yet one has actually restocked its new five vehicle sets in the space of a few weeks! I really shouldn't have but I couldn't resist grabbing another MBX City Drivers pack. Mainly for the Volvo V60 and Chrysler 300 of course but I do have a soft spot for this little plastic U.S. postal van which is a Grumman LLV in all but name. Mint and boxed.
