Drain holes were added for top watering when the planters were first made. They now need to be plugged for conversion to become sub-irrigated planters (SIPs). The planters must become watertight.

Drain holes are now plugged with corks and sealed with caulking compound.

Simply pour water into the fill tube until a small amount exits the overflow drain hole (lower right). An auto-irrigation system will be installed during the 2011 growing season.

Just add on top of the ground cover fabric and the pipes, some clay pebbles. Make sure the soil mix is not going to be mixed with the under water tank

I used some corrugated conduits or gutter downspout in a huge (3.5 ft) old aluminum fish poacher

Last year Pelargonium saved in a green house for this example.

Make sure the overflow hole works well, nothing must block it.

Once made, just need to wait until Pelargonium grow more

Les billes bien enfoncées dans le fond, seront en contact permanent avec le liquide. Comme les billes sont poreuses, l'action de la remontée capillaire se fait en douceur. Seul le fond est 'mouillé' plus on remonte, moins l'humidité est présente.

 

Après l'installation de la gaine ou du drain qui fera office de réserve d'eau, placer un film perforé (film de paillage ou une moustiquaire). Remplir le trou central de billes d'argile.

Le trou du tuyau de trop plein, sera agrandi, pour y passer le doigt, cela permet de savoir si il y a encore de l'eau au fond.
