Mayor Kirk Caldwell and Acting Fire Chief Emmit A. Kane, Honolulu Fire Department held a grand opening ceremony on January 29, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the new Ewa Beach Fire Station, which is located at 91-995 Kaileolea Drive.
The new fire station is located in Haseko Development, Inc.’s Ocean Pointe community on one acre of land donated by Haseko to the City and County of Honolulu (City). It was designed by Kodama/Okamoto Architects Inc. and built by 57 Builders Ltd. at a cost of approximately $6.1 million. It replaces the existing fire station on Pohakupuna Road, which was built in 1954 at a cost of approximately $77,800.
This fire station is the first City project built to achieve the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The station is also the HFD’s first gender-neutral fire station, which makes it easier and more comfortable for female and male fire fighters assigned to the station. It has individual sleeping areas instead of a barracks-style dormitory and multiple individual bath and shower rooms to ensure privacy and equal access.
The new one-story fire station is approximately 12,300 square feet with two apparatus bays. It will house one engine company with an assigned crew of five fire fighters. Modern features include solar water heating; central air conditioning; a fire apparatus exhaust filtration system; an apparatus wash area to prevent pollutants from entering the storm water system; an equipment decontamination room; and a washer/ extractor to remove contaminants from fire fighters’ protective clothing. It also has a three-story training tower that will be used for fire fighting drills and training.
