"The thallus form is both highly variable within species and broadly overlapping between most species. Within L. atrobrunnea s.str., for example, the areoles can be thin, flat, and dull; thick, convex and shiny; dark brown or pale brown; closely appressed or squamulose with raised edges. These differences are partly genetic, as shown by adjacent individuals of the same species being different in form. And they are partly environmental, as shown by individual thalli changing in form as they wrap from one facet of a rock to another."

The next group keys not only to Lecidea but to several other genera as well, e.g. Miriquidica, which can resemble L. atrobrunnea.

During the summit, youth filmmakers were divided into seven issue groups. Each group is also a filmmaking team that will produce a 60 second public service message about one of the issues: poverty, racism, war, health, environment, women's issues and youth empowerment.

Modules on the Practical Sustainability Course are taught as a mix of classroom and outdoor practical learning and field visits. Classroom teaching are a mix of lectures, participatory workshops, film, slides, discussions and activities. During the winter months we spend more time in the classroom and in the warmer months we spend more time out and about on field trips, growing and working on the green build module.
Here the students are studying the Transition movement. They are split into groups tackling different areas of community life; growing food, transport, health care etc and are working from their vision of the solutions back to where we are now. Identifying the stepping stones and fill in the gaps of how we get there. Much easier said than done, hence the concentration!
