“Ahnung“ („Hunch“) is the title of this installation work by Antje Scholz as part of the German artist group “Endmoräne“. I took the photo at the group'ss exhibition “Verlandet" in the Lenné-Park of Castle Dahlwitz, Berlin-Hoppegarten in June 2013.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the anual exhibition could only take place virtually online this year.

"A Wordless Text, Light on Water"
by Louise LeBourgeois and Steven Carrelli
@louiselebourgeois
@stevencarrellipittore
This drawing was made collaboratively by a remarkable Chicago based artist couple. The drawing brings together their respective practices in a whimsical image that speak (for me) of the tenuous existence of someone like Temma (the indirect subject of all of the works in this project).
This is one of the 23 works in the upcoming enigmatic group exhibition titled "Deposition: Drawn" at North Park University. Opening reception on February 14 (Valentine's Day!) 4:30 - 6:30 and running through March 9.
This exhibition is an unusual mash-up of my work as curator (primarily as gallery director at @npuchicago ) and my work as an artist (particularly work that is related to my most frequent subject, my daughter Temma). I sent each of the participating artists a unique prompt which was for me somehow related to Temma. The participating artists then made a drawing related to their prompt. They also developed an accompanying text / title for the drawing. And then they sent that text to me along with a high resolution scan of their drawing.

Photo from the outdoor part of the Eastreet 2 exhibition - we've presented 25 photos as large prints (1,5x1m) at the center square of Lublin's beautiful Old Town district. The full version of the exhibition including 57 photos by authors from 18 countries, was presented in the Workshop of Culture gallery nearby, and accompanied by a slideshow of additional 50 photos. After the opening show in Poland, the exhibition went to France and Belgium, we have plans to show it in Ukraine this coming Spring. We are currently working on the third edition of Eastreet, which will take place in July 2015 in Lublin, Poland. Stay tuned!

I will be showing 3 photographs from series: To Be Unwanted.
You are all invited to 'Fleeting Essence', a group exhibition in which for the first time I'll be showing my new work, using satellite imagery. In these works I express my fascination with transitional landscapes and different landscape typologies.
The large scale pictures were made by stitching together many many screen shots from publicly accessible satellite imaging software and reworking them extensively, enhancing textures and 'mining' for colours.

"To break with the past"
by Leyli Rashidi Rauf
@leylirashidi_rauf
The Iranian artist Leyli Rashidi Rauf was one of the first people I thought of for this project. I specifically asked her to make a drawing of a woman's long hair because 1) we generally wait to cut Temma's (my daughter and the implicit subject of this project) hair until it is long enough to be donated for wigs for kids with medical hair loss and 2) I've been thinking a lot about – and trying to support – the current revolution in Iran where women have been cutting their hair as a protest against tyrannically oppressive regime.

"Be my riverside"
by Katie Cooper
This drawing by long time friend and music collaborator Katie Cooper. The title of Katie's drawing is a line from a song that we have played together. I wrote the song thinking of my daughter Temma and how she is metaphorically like the river and we who care for her like the riverside. You can hear the song here: soundcloud.com/lowly-00/03-riverside-8-3-14-final. (Katie and Karima Walker are singing the song.)

"At Presen (Temma Lowly)"
graphite and gesso on paper
8.5 x 11 inches
2023
Here is Nik Burkhart's contribution to the "Deposition: Drawn" project and upcoming exhibition opening on Valentine's Day, February 14, 4-6 pm in the Carlson Tower Gallery of North Park University, Chicago.
With Nik's piece there is more than meets the eye. Here's Nik's text:
I've attached my contribution to the project in response to your prompt. The title for this is "At Present (Temma Lowly)". I made this piece using Graphite and Gesso on Rives BFK Paper. I'm exploring the idea of additive and subtractive methods of image production over the course of the making of the piece. I was thinking about the growth of a tree and how each subsequent year it adds a growth ring as evidence of its persistence. At any given moment, all layers of its growth are present, even though you can only see the exterior layer.
For this drawing, I have projected and drawn multiple layers of the same image onto this paper to equal Temma's age (37) at the outset of this exhibition. I drew with graphite and subsequently covered it with a layer of gesso, then allowed it to dry and started again. There are 19 layers of graphite drawings and 18 layers of gesso built up on the paper. This process was fairly mundane in its repetition, but each layer (particularly the drawing phases) caused me to attend to different details in the overall image. Because of the way graphite interacts with gesso, applying the gesso layer wasn't a process of erasure, but rather a means of unifying the layers of drawings over the course of time as the graphite mixed with the paint and changed the tonal range of the image.
While the metaphor of tree and stump as relates to Temma are not exactly a perfect match, I felt a resonance that was worth exploring for this project. I feel unqualified to talk about disability as relates to this image, but recognize from your writing and artwork that in coming to terms with Temma's condition, you have simultaneously encountered profound loss and a deeper beauty through her presence in your life.
I am uncomfortable with the connotations of death brought to mind by the image of a stump in this context, but it bears acknowledgement. We typically measure the life of a tree (particularly a cherry tree like this stump) in terms of its ability to produce fruit, or at least the amount of time that it is alive and photosynthesizing. Assessing value in these terms neglects the reality that the physical presence of the wood/stump/matter continues to exist and age past the expiration of its standard utility. Said another way, measuring value (of anything or anyone) in terms of usability is a narrow view and a path to objectification or exploitation. Other connections can be drawn, but I think this gives context for my thoughts.
In thinking about a writing to be included with my piece, I have wrote the following poem.
this present
is as much
what was
as what is here
now

"The Cat's Ajar"
carbon dust, pencil & white ink
by Megan (Bluhm) Foldenauer, PhD
@meganfoldenauercreative
This marvelous drawing by Megan Foldenauer is both humorous and disconcerting. For me it nods to a pink squeaky toy cat that Temma use to have. The constraint of the Mason jar is somewhat apt metaphor for the profound disabilities Temma has. This is one of the 24 works in the upcoming enigmatic group exhibition titled "Deposition: Drawn" at North Park University. Opening reception on February 14 (Valentine's Day!) 4:30 - 6:30 and running through March 9.
