GroundWork, Earthlife Africa JHB and Greenpeace confront Eskom over bad choices: Demand New Management.

Johannesburg, 23 October, 2012: Today, three campaigning organisations joined forces to put South Africa’s energy utility, Eskom, under New Management. Activists confronted the utility to publicly highlight that Eskom has failed to deliver clean, affordable, accessible electricity to the people of this country, and demand a shift away from coal. The organisations installed New Management members: Bobby Peek, as the new CEO, Makoma Lekalakala, as the new Eskom Stakeholder Engagement Director, and Melita Steele as the new Eskom spokesperson. Groundworks, the best coffee in Venice, is a couple blocks away from us. Beach + a real Seattle-style latte = spoiled.

We started working on the pool first but it is probably the last part of The Lime that will be finished. There are a lot of groundworks to be completed to bring water to that area of the site.

ELIZABETH, NJ – October 2, 2017 – Preschool students of George Washington Academy of Science and Engineering School No. 1 received a donation of 100 pumpkins from Groundworks Elizabeth at the school on Monday.

Groundwork Elizabeth is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to work with communities to make fundamental improvements in the quality of its environment in order to build healthy, sustainable and equitable communities. Their four priority areas are healthy communities, youth development, urban waters and trails, and green infrastructure.

The organization has already shown its support to the Elizabeth Public Schools community, participating with district schools in Kids Dig In Grant events established by the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders to educate students about gardening and fostering the growth and creation of community gardens at the schools. Among the participating schools are Winfield Scott School No. 2, Mabel G. Holmes School No. 5, Jerome Dunn Academy School No. 9, Abraham Lincoln School No. 14, John Marshall School No. 20, Victor Mravlag School No. 21, Juan Pablo Duarte – José Julián Martí School No. 28, Dr. Albert Einstein Academy School No. 29, Thomas A. Edison Career and Technical Academy, and Thomas Jefferson Arts Academy.

In addition, Groundworks Elizabeth also plans to donate a butterfly garden to Dr. Orlando Edreira School No. 26 and Nicholas S. LaCorte – Peterstown School No. 3 for which the dates have yet to be determined.

“The outstanding work that Groundworks Elizabeth does to improve the quality of life for this city is significant and its impact is far reaching. On behalf of the Elizabeth Board of Education, I thank Groundworks Elizabeth for enriching the lives of our students through this wonderful donation,” stated Elizabeth Board of Education President Stanley Neron.

Elizabeth Public Schools Superintendent Olga Hugelmeyer shared her appreciation for the donation and takes pride in partnering with fellow Elizabeth organizations seeking to make positive contributions to the community.

“Groundworks Elizabeth aligns well with our priority of creating a safe and caring environment for our students and team members to achieve excellence,” stated Hugelmeyer. “We welcome their valued contributions as we teach our students the importance of nurturing and preserving our community.”

Groundwork for Durga Puja 2013

This image was taken by Peter, a participant on a short ‘Introduction to Digital Photography’ course which we delivered as part of a wider community volunteering programme. The short photography course allows people to see their world in a different way and adds to the confidence volunteers gain whilst on the programme. It’s always interesting to see and discuss the images people take. Peter was attracted to the shattered mirror left in the local environment and was keen to capture the reflection of the grasses and surrounding habitat within the discarded object. An interesting shot and one that no one else captured.

Spray with wet water (water + washing up liquid) or for fine textures neat or dilute alcohol. Get it pretty wet.

Weekly Animation XXIII: Radiate and Oriedita Exploration

The radiate pattern is a pretty simple one, but can be used as the groundwork for more complex and interesting designs. Even still, by itself with the right lighting it looks neat; those shadows really pop!

I'm at the OrigamiUSA convention in Manhattan this weekend, and learned about a sweet origami design software called oriedita. In my playing with it I'm finding huge potential to decrease the time I take on my corrugation designs. To date, I've been using Inkscape - an incredible program - but my reflection-and-extend/retract method of designing is not really what Inkscape is meant for. Oriedita should help with that aspect significantly, as it's a CAD program that's for origami designs.

I've thrown in some explorations with the program and the Radiate pattern after the crease pattern. These were quick; I think I did all of the designs and photos exports in about fifteen minutes... crazy. There's a wide playground available, and I'm excited to explore it more!

Special shout-out to Bodo Haag (ko-fi.com/bodorigami, @bodo_ori on Instagram) - one of the invited guests at the OUSA convention - for introducing me to oriedita and walking me through some of the basics.
