The waterfalls over at Grizzly River Run is a bit of a hidden treasure. Unless you venture out into the area, you'll miss them. Great place to cool off or take a photo!
Brave the churning, white water rapids as you make your way down Grizzly River.

This little corner of Grizzly Peak in DCA for taking photos of people on the ride is pretty photogenic by itself!

A view from the other side of Grizzly Peak Waterfall I posted last week.
Would love to hear what you think. Thanks for looking!
The rubber rafts of the Grizzly River Run ride go up and then under this timber structure by a mock river mill in Frontier Land in Disneyland’s California Adventure Park.
At least thats what it felt like when I ran up to this scene after taking my previous shot in Paradise Pier. This was like the final 20 seconds or so of color in the sky, there was no time to set up my tripod and as a result this was handheld.
As for the shot, this is a handheld 2 shot HDR, processed with Camera Raw, CS6, and some Nik software.
Please don't hesitate to tell me what you think, comments and constructive criticism are welcome and appreciated! :)
As they say, looks can kill. This dame wasn't your average beauty. No, she knew how to wield her slender frame, full lips, and brown eyes as well as the .35 in the bottom of her purse. She was the type to lure some unsuspecting dope into her entanglements and take what she decided was hers.
When I passed through this scene, the tops of the trees were aglow with some rays of sunlight streaking through, the water looked cool and the grass looked so soft under the late afternoon light. I wanted to do an HDR but I was confined to a single exposure because I didn't have my tripod with me. I'm still a bit unhappy with how this one turned out but I'm really not sure what else I can do to salvage it.

I awoke lost and alone in the forest, dark and quiet except for a light shimmering in the distance. I followed a path that seemed to lead me towards it, stepping gently in my bare feet across the dirt and gravel ground. As I approached a clearing in the path, I noticed the light did not eminate from one source, but all and everything around me glowed with a warm embrace. Happy and content, I found a rock to sit upon by the flowing river. My eyes gazed across the land where I sat and joy filled my heart. I began whistling a tune in hopes it would help my love find me. I know one day the time will come and we will be together once more but till then, I will sit on my rock by the flowing stream in the warm forest and whistle a tune for my love

A little ghost story for all my Sunday Slider friends. HSS!
I wanted to practice some panning shots and I thought what a better place than Grizzly River Run where the rafts come down the waterfall and make a big splash. There is a short path that leads down and around and ends near the water. I put on a long lens to help with the motion and stood up a level from the water where I knew I would not get wet.
Apparently the ride was stopped as nothing came down for about 10 minutes. A mom and her son rushed by me and got to the last bend in the path before coming out near the water. She stopped as her kid went on. She didn't want to get wet. With a totally straight face, her son yelled back to here, You won't get wet, I promise. So the mom headed down.
In the meantime I could here some riders around the top and got my camera ready. The raft came down, I pushed the shutter botton, saw the splash, heard the scream and one really wet mom ran past me yelling, You said I wouldn't get wet! Her son yelled back, You didn't get wet, you got SOAKED!

Grizzly River Run in DIsney's California Adventure Park is not the longest runaway raft ride, nor the wettest...Short but sweet, this ride is is really fun though and never fails to refresh on a hot sunny day! This stretch of the river is approaching the end where your raft enters a boiling geyser patch that threatens to drench you one final time before disembarking from your journey...
Grizzly River Run is also one of the most photogenic parts of all the Disneyland Resort, having a Sierra Mountain landscape that does a very good job of elevating your reality to a higher altitude.
This photo was taken early in the day during a recent mini meetup. Being a HDR image, multiple exposures are required to get the image right. When moving subjects are involved, shenanigans are often required...In this case, I chose the "best" images from my bracket that represented the raft, water, and people, using them as layers to be masked into the HDR tonemap created by Photomatix...There is a lady in black on the bridge doing a double fist-pump...
HDR Image from 3 exposures
Finally! A Brenizer panorama that actually stitched in the computer! Except, one of the panels on the bottom left corner wouldn't match up (it's all redwood bokeh) so this has been reduced from a rectangle to a square. But it's still better than I could have done with the lenses at my disposal. I took 28 frames in three horizontal layers with my 30mm set to 7.1. The calculation on this page says that this image is the equivalent of a 12mm focal length with an effective aperture of 2.9. The Sigma does give me chromatic aberrations, but this file size is so huge that it's not very noticeable.

As I was exiting Disney California Adventure last night, I couldn't help but notice how the rafts were getting lined up for tomorrow's day of river rafting. They were bobbing up and down with the current, fighting to move forward but to no prevail. Don't worry, tomorrow will present them the opportunity to once again navigate the white waters of the Grizzly River Run!
This photo is the first attempt at something new. If many of you pay attention to the same photographers I do (or, for that matter, are) you may have noticed that there's been a lot of conversations on Flickr this year about both Photoshop and "after effects" - telling a true story vs an idealized one.
It's obvious I've always been in the idealized camp - whether it's clone stamping out Tinkerbell's lifeline or adding my signature color to a shot - I change the image. But my edits have always been very very simple. And yet, I have the tools to do so much more. I've invested the money to buy Lightroom, Photoshop, and Nik over the years - and while I've gotten pretty good with Lightroom, Nik, and basic photo-wide edits - I've never been one to add any stunning surreal effects into my shots.
So for 2014, I have a goal. I want to learn Photoshop so that I can add simple, special effects that enhance my photos slightly and tastefully. This photo is my first attempt at doing something special and new. Can you spot it? Is it tasteful? Let me know! Oh, and a special thanks to everyone who has offered to help me out - or has pointed in me in the right direction!
FYI this is a handheld nighttime shot - those aren't going anywhere - I'm still too lazy to frequent the tripod (aka I need a smaller and lighter one).
If you'd like to see the original, it's available here.
That's right, Never. That awesome sky shocked the crud out of me when I pulled it up on my computer. That would be because I didn't take a photo of the sky that day. Instead, I took a photo of some leaves with a man made river and man made rocks in the background at sunset. There wasn't a cloud insight. And that is how I got the best cloudy fall sunset sky never!

I am a monring person all the way through. Nothing in the world beats waking up before the sun. As my arms stretch to brush off any remaining animals laying on me, I yawn, blink the remaining sleep from eyes and roll out of bed. After picking myself up off the floor, I stumble across the room to the hall, roll down the stairs and land at the bottom face down. Mumbling "I'm ok", I get up and head to the kitchen to make coffee. I head outside and watch the sun come up. It's a beautiful, quite, serene moment when nothing else matters in the world. I am a morning person and summer mornings will never be beat. I will melt away to nothing in the summer morning sun and I will be happy

Cleaning out some old photos and stumbled upon some builds from 2012 and 2013 that I had once posted on MOCPages but never here on Flickr. Figured I might as well share some of them here since it seems MOCPages is long gone.
This was a 2012 attempt at forced perspective, using the iconography of Grizzly Peak at Disney's California Adventure Park.

Grizzly State is always the calmest part of DCA, at least, this is how it's always been for me. Is it because of the general atmosphere, or because it's kind of in the back of the park? Maybe both.
But as of recent, it's even quieter since Condor Flats has been shut down. Grizzly State has gone from tranquil to eerily quiet, something that seems foreign in a Disney Park.
Regardless, I found this composition one night as I was walking over to Disneyland. Something about the trees, the bear, and the water worked for me, and hopefully it does for you too!
This is my first HDR photo of 2015, and hopefully there will be many more to come.
Thanks for your views, comments, and favorites!
It’s not often I get to post something old at Disney that I’ve never posted before but here we are. I’ve sat on this shot for a while because it always annoyed me that the trees had grown so much by the time I visited that Grizzly Peak is obscured. I’ve gotten over it now and other than that minor issue I really do like the shot. The sky especially turned out really nice and I love the contrast against the warmth of the mill.
Grizzly River Run is a river rafting ride at Disney California Adventure very similar to Kali River Rapids in Disney's Animal Kingdom. It's name comes from Grizzly Peak, the bear shaped mountain that the rapids flow around.
The trip around Grizzly Peak begins with the rafts being lifted up a wooden conveyor that runs under leaking pipes that spray water on the riders. Upon reaching the top of the conveyor, the rafts are dropped into the water to descend the peak, passing through a cave and bumping against a log jam. The climax of the ride drops the rafts down into a geyser field. The final drop has a unique element in that the rafts are spun as they begin their descent.

I realized that I never had any shots of the Grizzly River Run mill after it's "Project Sparkle" redo, so I went back and found one in my library. Things like this make me so excited for the new DCA debut in less than 2 weeks!
As for the shot, this is a single shot, processed with Camera Raw, CS5, and Nik Color Efex.
Please don't hesitate to tell me what you think, comments and constructive criticism are welcome and appreciated! :) I'm in the midst of finals here but I'll do my best to comment back!
It's amazing to even see a few stars in Anaheim. On a clear dark night you can see many. This night proved to be one of the few that offered a pleasant view of the heavens. It's sometimes overwhelming to think about how large the universe actually is.

Eureka Gold & Timber Co. mining operation on the back side of Grizzly River Run in Grizzly Peak Recreation Area
This Park Ranger has quite the office. Nice wooden structures, a canoe for a bookshelf (a really cool idea I plan on stealing someday) and an "open" floor plan... okay maybe it's a little too open... especially with all the guests walking around!!
I'd like to thank you for your comments and well-wishes while I was sick. I was out of work for a week and I'm just now getting back into the swing of things and, of course, digging through my photos for something to work on since I haven't been shooting. I hope you all had a fun filled New Year's Eve and that you enjoyed your time off today. I'd also like to congratulate those of you who've finished a 365! How many of you are going to be starting one this year?
Eureka Gold & Timber Company along the Grizzly River Run
Grizzly River Run is the longest, tallest and fastest river rapids ride in the world, located at Disney California Adventure at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California. It is similar to Kali River Rapids in Disney's Animal Kingdom but distinctive as the rafts are engineered to spin as they descend chutes. The attraction's name comes from Grizzly Peak, the bear shaped mountain that the rapids flow around. It was designed by Walt Disney Imagineering and constructed by Intamin.
As for the history of Grizzly Peak Recreation Area, a Disney created backstory tells of how German emigrant Jakob Probst discovered gold at Grizzly Peak in the mid-1800s. But far from being a genius, Probst and his discovery was by pure chance. Frustrated at failing to get his mule across Grizzly River, Probst threw his hat into the river and trampled it. Picking it up and putting it back on his head, he discovered a one-pound gold nugget had fallen inside. Probst immediately staked a claim he later sold for millions to the Eureka Gold & Timber Company.
Nicknamed "The Pride of the Sierra", the Company was a successful business throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Gold was extracted from the mountain and shipped to San Francisco. A company office and adjoining store were built right next door as well. But by the early 1950s the mine was tapped and Eureka Gold & Timber closed down. The structures stood empty for years - only the office and company store remained in use - converted to an outdoor supply store.
The land itself was sold to the government to create the Grizzly Peak Recreation Area. Over the next few decades the land was reborn with trees growing back and rivers clearing up. Eventually, California's rafting enthusiasts discovered the whitewater thrills of Grizzly River and the word got out about the crystal-clear waters and Class V rapids there. By the 1980s, that hobby had grown into a business with several companies offering guided raft trips to customers. One of those companies was run by a savvy young group of entrepreneurs. They purchased the old mining structures to use as their base of operations. The Grizzly River Rafting Company was born.
Grizzly Peak is designed as an early 20th-century California state park. As part of the park's major 2007–2012 refurbishment, the old queue that had been themed around extreme sports was replaced with an homage to California state parks, specifically after Redwood Creek and the Sacramento River. Elements that evoke the "golden age" of national parks are placed around the entrance, alluding to the wave of turn-of-the-century wildlife conservation.
The raft trip around Grizzly Peak begins with the rafts being lifted up a wooden conveyor that runs under leaking pipes that spray water on the riders. Upon reaching the top of the conveyor, the rafts are dropped into the water to descend the peak, passing through a cave and bumping against a log jam. The climax of the ride drops the rafts down into a geyser field. The final drop has a unique element in that the rafts are spun as they begin their descent.
As with all flume-type rides, there must be a location to store or drain the water in the upper sections of the flumes when the pumps are shut down. The original plan was to create a large, underground basin beneath Grizzly Peak to hold water. This would have required costly excavation and construction. Upon looking at the final layout of California Adventure, it was noticed that the Pacific Wharf area of the park had a water element meant to simulate a tidal basin. The tidal basin is located across a walkway from Grizzly River Run and became the catch basin for water from the raft ride. The rise and fall of water in the tidal basin serves the dual purpose of providing a location to store water and being a scenic element that simulates a rising and falling tide.
