Installation of Spring 2013 Midterm Work.

Over the break and over the last couple of weeks I have been experimenting with how to represent these ideas. My recent experiments explore this aging cycle by repeatedly printing images with a basic consumer-grade inkjet printer until the ink from the printer has completely been depleted. Artistic Approach

HEY. HORNY. GRRRR. explores the frailty of human connection and sexual encounter by unpacking the semiotics of queer hook-up culture in online and social media platforms such as Scruff, Grindr, and GROWLr. The work consists of thousands of letters individually cast in concrete; their size mimicking the form of alphabetized magnets found on refrigerator doors to reference play and recreation.The letters spill, cascade, and swell to form accumulations, piles, and stacks that reveal the most common of greetings, flirtations, and intentions when communicating online. In this in-situ installation, the digital word becomes a tangible visual language that reveals the experience of the artist, yet evokes the commonalities and the resonate fragments of online interactions shared by most.

 

Biography

Christos Pantieras is an Ottawa-based multi-disciplinary artist who works in sculpture, installation, drawing, and mixed-media. He holds a Bachelors of Fine Arts from the University of Ottawa and a Masters of Fine Arts in Sculpture from York University. His work has been acknowledged through grants from the Ontario Arts Council and the City of Ottawa.

16. Quinn — Quinn is a very sassy street performer. He's been performing for the last 10 or so years at circuses, theaters and cruise lines. He's from Vancouver, Canada— the better part as he put it. Quinn was quite apt to point me out in the crowd and began doing glamour posing for me during his routine— calling out that they could be used for his Grindr, Facebook and Instagram.
