nachdem es die letzten Tage getaut hatte, schneit es seit ein paar Stunden wieder bei uns, der Winter hat uns also fest im Griff
In der Maschine der «Cap San Diego». Die «Cap San Diego» ist ein nach wie vor seetüchtiges Museumsschiff (Baujahr 1961) und hat seinen Liegeplatz an der Überseebrücke des Hamburger Hafens.
("Vorwärts immer, Rückwärts nimmer!" wurde von Erich Honecker (1976–1989 Generalsekretär des ZK der SED und Vorsitzender des Staatsrats der DDR) in seiner Festansprache zum 40. Jahrestag der DDR am 7. Oktober 1989 zitiert, aber schon früher geschöpft und ist auch Teil des Textes eines älteren Militärmarsches).

In the engine of the "Cap San Diego". The "Cap San Diego" is a still seaworthy museum ship (built in 1961) and is moored at the Overseas Bridge (in German: "Überseebrücke") at the Port of Hamburg.
(“Vorwärts immer, rückwärts nimmer” (“Forward always, backward never!”) was quoted by Erich Honecker (1976-1989 General Secretary of the Central Committee of the German Socialist Unity Party ("SED") and Chairman of the State Council of the GDR) in his ceremonial address on the 40th anniversary of the GDR on October 7, 1989, but was scooped up earlier and is also part of the text of an older military march. In German, "voraus" means "ahaed” and "zurück" means "back".)

Au retour d'une randonnée au col de Bavella, j'ai surpris cette petite mouche plate posée sur mon bras. Elle semblait ne pas vouloir me quitter, bien agrippée grâce à ses pattes munies de solides griffes.
J'en ai donc profité pour lui tirer le portrait, une fois remontée en voiture. Les conditions n'étaient pas les meilleures, entre le vent qui s'engouffrait pas la fenêtre et les cahots de la route, mais j'ai tout de même réussi à faire quelques clichés assez nets. Je l'ai ensuite relâchée par la fenêtre, ne voulant pas lui servir de repas.
Car cette mouche est hématophage et parasite les chevaux, on l'aura compris, mais également les bovidés, les chiens, ou les humains (donc moi). Elle a également été observée sur la Chouette chevêche et le Milan royal. Peut-être parasite t'elle d'autres oiseaux encore ?!
Il est intéressant de notre que la femelle est pupipare. C'est à dire que les petites larves grandissent dans son abdomen et sont nourries par des glandes produisant un liquide nutritif. Une fois arrivées au stade de pupe la femelle va les pondre directement sur le sol.

Die Nymphe vom Mendebrunnen vor dem Gewandhaus hat das sich drehende Doppel-M der Leipziger Messe auf dem Wintergartenhochhaus scheinbar fest im Griff.
This view of Griff Colliery formed part of the West Midlands Industry lecture set and was another Maurice Stedman slide rescue.
Griff Colliery was situated at Heath End near Nuneaton, it was formed from a number of pits which were rail served from the Griff Colliery Branch, the branch connected to the Coventry to Nuneaton railway line near to Chilvers Coton railway station, it also had an arm and basin from the Coventry canal. From a map I would suggest that this view was taken from Heath End Road which ran between Griff Colliery numbers 5 and 6 pits
Pits were sunk in the area from as early as 1716 but the Griff Colliery Company came into being on 12th September 1882 when a limited company was formed. The Griff Colliery Company Ltd ran the mines until 1947 when the National Coal Board was formed. The final closure took place when number 4 pit closed on 22nd July 1960. Between November 1963 and February 1964 all the remaining railway lines* were lifted by contactors. Some of the colliery buildings remain in use on part of the site which is an industrial estate.
*I think there are some Griff Colliery railway pictures in the Shoesmith archive...when I get time!
