At work I saw a fox run across the lawn and disappear behind a log cabin. When I walked around to the front of the cabin the fox was nowhere to be seen. Out of curiosity, I wondered if the fox had darted UNDER the cabin. I put the flash on my camera, and held my camera at ground level and took a photo of the crawl space. Guess what was looking back at me! There were actually four foxes under there. The other two are out of sight.

At the cemetery of the long-gone community of Harmony Ridge, I spotted a Common Gray Fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) - quite common throughout the United States, but this is the first one I had clearly spotted in two years of hiking and exploring around the state. As I was walking through the tombstones, the fox suddenly jumped out of a low-hanging tree less than ten feet in front of me and bounded away -- remarkably within a couple of seconds I was still able to bring the camera up, zoom in and snap the picture. Hopefully in the future I will be have the opportunity to take a better shot. Harmony Ridge was originally established on high ground near where the San Saba River meets with the Colorado River; the community center recently burned down, now all that remains is a rebuilt open-air enclosure and the old cemetery.

Mount Rainier, Washington

I had one heck of an adventure this weekend, with a great story as well. It first starts getting up at midnight and meeting up with Lisa, Christina, and Walt. Google Maps on my iPhone locks up, so I have to call Christina and have them come find me somewhere in Washington. After they all pile into my itty bitty car, we head off for Mount Rainier.

We managed to be on the trail by 4am, hiking our way with Christina in the lead. Lisa is walking behind her, and Walt and I are in the rear. About 30 minutes into the hike, the incident happens. Walt and I heard a loud scream ahead of us. We shine our flashlights ahead to see Christina running back our way screaming. As part of a chain reaction, Lisa starts screaming and starts running behind Christina. They both pass me and hide behind Walt.

Now I'm thinking either Cougar or Bear with their reaction, so I shine my flashlight ahead to see what all the fuss is about. I see two glowing eyes, but can't make out what it is. So I begin walking towards it, when in comes into view a gargantuan Werewolf. (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) I mean this thing was huge, and standing it's ground on the trail before me. I mean this thing had to be twice the size of a Chihuahua, if not bigger. I look back at the screaming girls hiding behind Walt and have to stand there scratching my head. I then start walking towards the Werewolf, and it scampers off the trail when I get within ten feet of it. The Werewolf and I stand our ground having a staring contest while Walt walks the girls past me.

We get up further up the trail and start looking for our own comps with wildflowers. Everybody finds there own spot, and we all enjoy the view as the sunlight starts to hit the mountain. It was a good time being up there in the elements, despite the hummingbird sized mosquitoes that kept attacking me. That was worse then the Werewolf.

The rest of the group leaves to head back down, while I remain to get a couple of last shots off. I finally head back down and run into them while Christina is shooting a waterfall. I stop to get some waterfall shots off while they scamper back down the trail. I eventually see Walt on the trail ahead of me, so we wave to each other. Walt disappears from my sight, and I continue on the trail. I noticed it seemed to be taking longer to get to the car then I realized, and I was no longer heading downward. Eventually I get to an opening where I can see my car off in the distance, and three dots sitting next to it. It was here that I figured out I was going in the wrong direction.

I make my way back and eventually find the trail split. It was in the same spot that Walt had been standing when we waved to each other. I smacked my forehead pretty hard then. I eventually made my way back down to the car, and they all were asking me where I had been.

The moral of the story:

Don't leave behind the guy with the car keys,

especially after he saves your lives from a Werewolf.
