There was a zebra fight. We think it was for mating rights, as it was the three females fighting in front of the one male.

What is a Zebra? 26 sizes larger than an A bra. But seriously, you have seen the Masai Zebra or Mountain Zebra earlier in this album. (see previous pictures). Here is a Grevy's Zebra- this is another species of this animal. The Grévy's zebra, also known as the imperial zebra, is the largest living wild equid and the largest and most threatened of the three species of zebra, the other two being the plains zebra and the mountain zebra. Named after Jules Grévy, it is the sole extant member of the subgenus Dolichohippus. For those of you who are viewing these pictures at random, this is in the Bali Safari in Indonesia, and I am on the Safari Tram/ bus ride on my way back to the exit. (Bali, Indonesia, May 2018)

I went to Boise Idaho this weekend and visited Zoo Boise.

This is a Grevy's Zebra. One of my favorite animals. They are SO beautiful.

I stood for quite a while with these Grevy's, waiting for them to do something, anything, but they seemed content to just graze, as befits their species. However, with a foal around there's always a chance of something happening. Florence is getting older now but I don't know if she's fully weaned yet. She was pestering her mum for some lunch, nipping and poking at her until mum told her off in no uncertain terms.

I was lucky enough to witness the birth of a live Grevy's Zebra (Equus grevyi) foal in the wild in 2009. Grevy's zebra is endangered, with only abou 2500 individuals remaining in the wild. The birth is described and discussed in a scientific paper published in the journal Ethology. The paper is available at www.blaircostelloe.com/Research. To my knowledge, this is the only documented observation of a wild Grevy's zebra birth to date.

Physical Description:

Big heads, large and rounded ears, and thick, erect manes make the Grevy's zebra appear more mule-like than other zebras. In fact, many experts consider Grevy's zebras to be striped asses that are not closely related to other zebras. Their coats sport dazzling narrow stripes that wrap around each other in a concentric pattern and are bisected by a black stripe running down the spine.

they weigh up to 990 lbs.

The Grevy's zebra is an endangered species native to northern Kenya and southern and eastern Ethiopia and Somalia (Grevy's zebra is now extinct in Somalia). The total population in the wild is estimated to be from two to six thousand.

This particular zebra lives on a private ranch in Central Texas. Note the characteristic large erect ears, white belly and narrow black stripes overall which are bisected by a dark mane down the spine. It is the largest zebra of the three zebra species.
