A new classroom, laboratory, and studio facility designed by Thom Mayne of Morphosis Architecture with associate architect Gruzen Samton completed construction in Summer 2009, replacing the aging Hewitt Academic Building at 41 Cooper Square. In contrast to the Foundation Building, 41 Cooper Square is of modern, environmentally "green" design, housing nine above-ground floors and two basements. The structure features unconventional architectural features, including a full-height Grand Atrium, prevalent interior windows, a four-story linear central staircase, and upper-level skyways, which reflect the design intention of inspiring, socially interactive space for students and faculty. In addition, the building's design allows for up to 75% natural lighting, further reducing energy costs. Other "green" features in the design include servo-controlled external wall panels, which can be swiveled open or closed individually in order to regulate interior light and temperature, as well as motorized drapes on all exterior windows. In 2010, 41 Cooper Square became the first academic and laboratory structure in New York City to meet Platinum-level LEED standards for energy efficiency.[70] The building was funded in part by alumni donations, materialized in nameplates and other textual recognition throughout the building.

Luke Ramsey is awesome. He creates beautiful, intricate pieces of artwork that include zines, murals, paintings and prints. He also runs Islands Fold, an independent publisher and artist residency in B.C., Canada.

We ran into Luke last summer at the Portland Zine Symposium, and saw him sketching in a Scout Book! Quickly gave him another, and within weeks he had filled it up and sent us images. At long last, here is what the fantastic Luke Ramsey did with the 32 grid pages of a Scout Book.

Awesome! Thanks, Luke.

isn't this supposed to be the place where the magic happens?

so, not for me, as the bed points directly @ the library, but still there are books stashed. i think i might have an addiction! quick, help!

in actuality, this bed is nearly 100% recycled (linens purchased @ a sample sale). those are pallets i lugged in, cleaned, &tc. to give my bed a well deserved lift. and of course, there's the storage factor. seems i can never have enough books, or interesting places in which to store them!

"Krea" is the new program for the living area of Mazzali.

Very high quality content technical characterize the program: a sandwich compound of plywood by 6 cm makes "Krea" a product of absolute value.

A lot of colours, suggesting a freedom in the design that should not be only space but also visual, almost sensory.

And then freedom to create, compose, play with the elements. Krea is solution and innovation, is the new concept of living that Mazzali has been able to interpret with refinement, content and search.

And finally Krea is sustainability: all woods used are from well managed forests for a furniture that increasingly puts sustainable development as a key evolutionary.

Concealed Storage - harvesting unused space

Photo Inside of home office 2 under the floating Mondrian desk are concealed trap doors in the floor are open by a food pedal revealing a hidden storage room. The doors opens up in sections using the same pneumatic arms that hold open car hoods. The doors swing clear under the desk which hangs from the ceiling n threaded rods. Stairs descend 5 feet below to the storage area, wich doubles as a nucear fall out shelter. Okay, now I'm just making things up.

In my career field of graphic design, I seriously think of 'green' issues in my work. When I look at the waste around me from the publishing/printing industry, I feel very disheartened in my choice of profession. I am trying to educate myself in these areas in order to be a better designer; to protect and renew this beautiful planet we live on.

The title for this image is from "e²: a critically acclaimed, multipart PBS series about the innovators and pioneers who envision a better quality of life on earth: socially, culturally, economically and ecologically."

I heard about a little land crab on our property, that uses a baby jar for a home. By sheer coincidence I found him hanging around the discarded coconuts last night. Funny huh?

This is an umang or hermit crab. Usually they occupy discarded snail shells to protect their soft lower bodies, but looks like this one decided to modernize. Very resourceful!

Tucked into a quiet corner beneath the towering rotunda, this image captures one of the more intimate and overlooked elements of the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco—the stepped stone planters and ornamental urn embedded in the curved garden wall. The monumental Beaux-Arts grandeur that defines the site gives way here to a moment of softness and human scale.

Architect Bernard Maybeck’s vision of a romantic ruin, inspired by Greco-Roman forms, extended even to the landscaping details. The giant carved urn echoes classical motifs with its fluted sides and Greek key border, while the staircase of inlaid planter boxes is both decorative and whimsical. Lush plantings spill over their edges, softening the geometry of the structure with seasonal growth.

Despite being located in the bustling Marina District, this area often offers a sense of peace and seclusion. The curved wall acts as a sound buffer, cocooning the visitor in stillness. The greenery flourishes even on a cloudy day, offering a muted palette of dusty greens, spotted yellow leaves, and the gentle burst of blooming magnolias.

The juxtaposition of lush vegetation against weathered stone conveys a timeless quality—nature reclaiming artifice, or perhaps the two existing in perfect balance. Every element reinforces the Palace’s original purpose: to celebrate the interplay of architecture, beauty, and the natural world.

Though millions visit the Palace of Fine Arts each year, few pause to notice this sculptural vignette—a garden moment that bridges ancient inspiration and early 20th-century romanticism.
