Meet the young Sunrise activists who marched 260 miles from Paradise to San Francisco, to ask our leaders for bold climate action.
We caught up with them at the Marin Civic Center in San Rafael, where local climate activists led by our partner Kevin Morrison greeted them with a fine vegan lunch and tributes.
Young activists featured in this photo set include Ema Govea, June Guthrie, Lola Guthrie, Vianni Ledesma, and many more. They came to join this two-week march from San Diego, Santa Rosa, Sebastopol and beyond.
In their talks and video interviews with me, they spoke about their fight for a more just and sustainable world. We told us why they promote a new Civilian Climate Corps, as the first step towards a Green New Deal.
I was impressed by their their passion and clear thinking, and am grateful to this “Generation on Fire” for leading the charge!

Young activists and their allies led a climate strike in San Rafael, California, to demand action on climate change. This community protest took place on Dec. 6th, 2019 and was hosted by the Sunrise Movement, 350Marin, Sierra Club Marin and Sustainable San Rafael.
The event started with the creation of a beautiful street mural in the city plaza, to remind passers-by that “the earth is watching.” Participants then marched to four major banks that are financing fossil-fuel development: Bank of America, Wells Fargo, JPMorgan Chase and Citi Bank. At each stop, activists chanted, listed each bank’s gas and oil investments and asked them to stop spending tens of billions every year on new fossil fuel projects that are harming our lives.
The rally ended with music and speeches at the city plaza, featuring the lovely harmonies of `Til Dawn, a youth ‘a cappella’ ensemble, and sing-alongs by the Freedom Singers. Speakers from Sunrise Marin and other local environmentalists took turns to protest corporate greed and government inertia and demand a Green New Deal.
GreenChange.net director Fabrice Florin took photos and videos of this climate strike, featuring young activists Naomi Bridges, Katrina Osborn, Sylvia Potovsky, Niklas Ugalde, as well as their allies Greg Brockbank, Bill Carney, Patrick Costello, Marilyn Price and Silke Valentine, to name but a few. These images are freely licensed for worldwide distribution, with attribution (CC-BY-SA 3.0).
This event was part of a global climate strike inspired by young activist Greta Thunberg, with millions of people around the world joining this protest. Together, these climate activists are forming a growing political movement that is committed to changing the world and solving the climate crisis. Stay tuned for more photos and videos from GreenChange.net !

Hundreds of people of all ages and backgrounds came to Tiburon for a peaceful protest against racism and police brutality on June 23rd, 2020.
The rally started at 4pm at the Tiburon Dog Park, at the intersection of Lyford Drive and Tiburon Blvd. Protesters then marched half a mile towards the fountain in downtown Tiburon, where speakers talked about racism in our area and how we can help change the culture that promotes inequity in our communities.
Everyone was welcome. A majority of participants where white, reflecting Marin County’s demographics. Many were young activists, which is music to my ears. Most people wore masks and tried to stay at a safe distance from each other.
I was inspired by this well-organized community gathering, which brought together diverse cultures to stand up for justice. By connecting with others who are different from us, we all learn how to play a productive role in bridging the gaps and enabling democracy.
I have pledged to do my part to support this social justice movement and fight with them in coming years. Black Lives Matter!

Hundreds of young activists joined an inspiring Youth Climate Strike in Santa Rosa, to demand action on climate change.
This North Bay strike was organized by young climate activists Lucy London and Kelley Tillman, along with their peers at the Novato High Earth Club. They gave speeches, sang together, made posters, marched on City Hall and created a beautiful mosaic to honor mother earth.
Over a million students around the world skipped school this Friday to protest government inaction on climate change, with thousands of rallies in 125 countries, making it the largest youth climate action in history.
Their peaceful demonstration in Santa Rosa was very moving: these young people are sweet, smart, articulate, dedicated and they share an amazing creative energy and love for the earth. I want to be like them when I grow up!
Our Green Change team supported their youth action by providing a sound system, a large earth globe, and shooting videos and photos of their uprising. Thanks to our crew members Sarah Acker and Marilyn Price for their invaluable support of this important cause. :)
In coming weeks, I will create a special video story featuring Lucy, Kelley and their friends for Climate Heroes, our new series on the new leaders of the green revolution.
Even though this was a youth-led event, they welcomed the help of adult allies like us. It was a pleasure to join forces with these young leaders to fight for climate action together, across generations!

Right before sunset, I took my new electric bike up the hill to the glorious Coyote Ridge in the Marin headlands. I love riding during that golden hour, which makes the whole landscape glow like embers, while cool tendrils of fog settle on the mountain, and the night’s dark shadows creep in from the valley below.
I started down by Tennessee Valley Beach, climbed straight up the hill to the Coastal Trail, overlooking Muir Beach. Then I trekked inland to rejoin the legendary Miwok Trail, up to Coyote Ridge’s majestic overlook, where I stopped to take a few pix and panoramas. From there, it was a smooth joyride down County View and the darkening Tam Valley below.
My Benno Boost handled that steep ride well, rolling smoothly over the rocky paths, giving me just the extra lift I needed to get a vigorous exercise without running out of breath. Even though it’s designed to casual everyday use, that is one rugged bike and I now ride it every chance I get. I still had a 20% charge left on my battery, and it only took a couple hours to recharge.
As we now have to stay isolated from each other to prevent the coronavirus from spreading, I feel incredibly lucky that I live in a place where I can find my bliss outdoors in such a magnificent natural setting. And I still got a chance to connect with a few bikers and hikers on the trail, but with enough distance than none of us were at risk.
I love that biking helps us connect with our neighbors, scaling back our transportation to a more human scale -- and inviting us to live more lightly on the earth. Vive le velo électrique!

A life-sized, 82-foot blue whale art installation sculpture was on display in winter 2018 in Crissy Field, San Francisco. Made from discarded plastic collected in California, the sculpture raises awareness about plastic pollution threatening our oceans. Every nine minutes, 300,000 pounds of plastic and trash end up in the ocean -- the approximate weight of a full-grown blue whale. The blue whale art installation helps visualize this impact.
This art art installation is presented by Monterey Bay Aquarium in partnership with the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA), the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, Hub Strategy & Communication, Building 180, and lead artists Joel Dean Stockdill and Yustina Salnikova as a part of the Art in the Parks program.

Green Change and friends organized a special Climate Art Exhibit for the 2019 Mill Valley Fall Arts Festiva, to engage more people to go green and fight climate change. We collaborated with these talented artists and dozens of volunteers to create this year’s featured presentation: Ann Dodge, Tess Felix, Fabrice Florin, Janey Fritsche, Al Grumet, Aurora Mahassine and Randy Rosenberg.
Together, we aimed to transform the redwood grove at Old Mill Park into a creative space for climate action. To that end, we prepared these artworks and activities for this special presentation:
• Ocean Plastic Portraits - stunning portraits made from recycled materials found on beaches
• Seeds of Change - a multi-dimensional living art installation rising 20 feet up in the redwood trees
• Keeping Score - a fun corn hole game about our food choices
• Hitting Home - an origami house activity to address our energy choices
• Alchemy of Fire - mixed-media paintings about the threat of wildfires
• This Island Earth - paintings celebrating the beauty and spiritual power of the nature
• Earth Bike - a unique art float created to inspire people to go green
• Green Change - an information table for learning about climate action
Special thanks to our gracious hosts Erma Murphy and Sylvia Barsky at MVFAF -- and to all the volunteers who so generously helped us present our work!

Tens of thousands of young people joined the global Climate Strike and marched down the streets of San Francisco to demand action on climate change. Our Green Change crew took photos and videos of young activists from Sunrise Marin as they protested corporate greed and government inertia. Featured in these photos are Ryan Brewer, Sylvia Potovsky, Marcos Gulati and Katherine Lam, from Drake, Marin Academy and San Rafael High Schools, to name but a few.
According to organizers, this was the largest environmental march in history, with an estimated 4 million people around the world joining the protest on September. 20, 2019 -- with as many as 40,000 participating in San Francisco.
We were struck by their passion and commitment to climate action. Together, we are forming a huge political movement that is already changing the world. Stay tuned for more photos and videos from GreenChange.net !

A dozen young climate activists gathered at the Novato High School to prepare posters, songs and speeches for their Youth Climate Strike in Santa Rosa the next day, where they planned to demand action on climate change.
This North Bay strike was organized by young activists Lucy London and Kelley Tillman, along with their peers at the Novato High Earth Club. The next day, they gave speeches, sang together, made posters, marched on City Hall and created a beautiful mosaic to honor mother earth.
Over a million students around the world skipped school this Friday to protest government inaction on climate change, with thousands of rallies in 125 countries, making it the largest youth climate action in history.
Their peaceful demonstration was very moving: these young people are sweet, smart, articulate, dedicated and they share an amazing creative energy and love for the earth. I want to be like them when I grow up!
Our Green Change team supported their youth movement by providing a sound system, a large earth globe, and recording videos and photos of their uprising.

I now bike as often as I can, to clear my head and stay healthy during the Coronavirus crisis. In between rainstorms, I have come across some amazing reflections of light against water. Here are a few dramatic scenes on the gorgeous Bay Trail and Tennessee Valley Road.
Silvery puddles mirror the blue skies and dark clouds ahead, revealing what looks like parallel universes, shining bright on the wet ground. I love riding my new electric bike through these glorious landscapes before sunset. During that golden hour, the land unveils magical scenes at each turn of the road, as the night gets ready to curl up inside our deserted valleys.
We are very lucky to live in such a beautiful place, where we can immerse ourselves in nature, right in our own backyard. And I’m glad that our local government has allowed exercise outdoors in our neighborhoods -- as long as we stay at least 6 feet away from other hikers or bikers we pass on the trails.
Walking and biking with our neighbors helps connect us to each other, while scaling back our transportation to a more human scale -- and inviting us to live more lightly on the earth. Vive les paysages féeriques!

Every chance I get, I ride my electric bike up and down some of the beautiful trails off Tennessee Valley, from Oakwood Valley to Haypress Camp and Chapparal, in the peaceful Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
In the spring, the valley is lush and green, blooming with colorful lupine, checker-bloom, blue-eyed grass, California buttercup, and California poppy. I often cross paths with other hikers and bikers, and it feels good to share this experience with them, even while we keep at a safe distance from each other, due to the Coronavirus.
I try to go biking every day, to clear my head and stay healthy during the pandemic. We are incredibly lucky to have so many beautiful trails right in our own backyard. And I am grateful that our health crisis is nudging us all to exercise in nature, connect with our neighbors and live more sustainably.

Behold the Earth Bike, a unique parade float created by artist and activist Fabrice Florin, to engage more people to go green and fight climate change. The Earth Bike features a 6-foot inflatable globe pulled by an electric bike, with signs inviting people to use clean energy, ride clean transportation, eat sustainably and take more climate actions featured on GreenChange.net.
Fabrice and the Green Change team presented this fun climate art project to thousands of people at the Fourth of July Parade in Corte Madera and Larkspur, Marin County. Throughout the parade, we sang environmental songs with our friends the Freedom Singers. We encouraged participants to take care of Mother Earth and go green in their own lives. Many people responded enthusiastically to our call to action and some walked over to pet the Earth and/or have their photos taken in front of it.
Green Change led a cohort of environmental groups at the parade, including these partners:
• Cool the Earth drove different models of electric cars
• The New Wheel rode with us and loaned some of their ebikes
• Marin County Bicycle Coalition showed their cool Alto Tunnel float
• Climate Now marched with a group of young activists
We’re grateful to all our friends, neighbors, partners and community members for joining forces with us to help more people go green. Thanks to our Green Change event crew, led by Fabrice Florin, Tom Flynn, Geo Monley and Marilyn Price, with Chris Brown, Diana Connolly, Kelly Horner and Paul Marmaro. Thanks as well to the Freedom Singers: Greg Brockbank, Deirdre Fennessy, Luisiana Gale, Angela Giacomini, Laura Giacomini, Joe Hiney, Rena Kay, Lillie Kocher, Gailya Morrison. And kudos to our partners in this environmental parade: Carleen Cullen, Robin Moller and Annika Osborn at Cool the Earth; Karen Wiener at New Wheel; Dwayne Price at the Marin Bicycle Coalition; and Sarah Goody at Climate Now.
This Earth Bike float was a great way to connect with people who were not yet engaged in climate action: through this fun outreach, we think we made an impression, raising people’s awareness about how we can help fight climate change, and getting a few of them to commit to taking action. Just as importantly, we started relationships with some great partners and team members. We look forward to collaborating on more community engagement projects with Green Change.

We celebrated Earth Day at the Green Living Festival in Novato, where our Green Change team hosted a booth, took photos of people’s green pledges and gave a workshop on climate action.
Green Change director Fabrice Florin hosted our climate action workshop with young activist Lucy London and a dozen participants. We first talked about what led each of us to make a green change in our lives, then invited participants to take the climate challenge with us. We presented our top 10 recommended actions for going green, including using renewable energy, eating sustainably, driving clean vehicles and more.
We also talked about the Green Change Network and the various ways in which we help each other go green. People seemed to appreciate this fun, convivial conversation and this chance to connect with other like minds. We ended the workshop with a lovely song by Lucy and her friend Kelley Tillman. They both lead the Novato High Earth Club, where they combine art, music and activism -- and they have been wonderful partners for us.
It was inspiring to hear all the diverse actions that participants plan to take this year. It gave us hope that if everyone does their part, we can solve the global climate crisis together.
Many thanks to Gretchen Schubeck, Robert Gould and the City of Novato for hosting this event, as well as to our amazing Green Change team: Tom Flynn, Al Grumet, his son Gus and wife Sonia, Ilse Gonzalez, Kelly Horner, Marilyn Price and Silke Valentine. This was our team's first public event this season, and we were energized to meet so many people who were ready to go green with us. Change is coming.

A home energy checkup is a great way to save money on energy costs while improving the comfort and efficiency of your home. This simple action can help you reduce your energy usage and recommend home improvements and routines that can enhance your home and put money in your pocket.
In this photo set, Peter Waring from Healthier Dwelling did a full home energy assessment, checking our house for leaks. It appears we have a lot leaks, which will require us to seal our home, to reduce our overall energy consumption and carbon emissions. Stay tuned for more developments on this front.
This is just one of the climate actions we are taking this year, to make a green change in our lives: switching to 100% renewable electricity, getting an electric vehicle, biking more often, canceling long flights, converting gas appliances to electric and eating a plant-rich diet.
In just six months, we have reduced our carbon footprint by half, and we hope to reach zero emissions by the end of next year. This is just one of the ways we are trying to help solve the climate crisis. Besides taking action in our own lives, I have also started Green Change, our new climate action network in Marin, to help others go green with us.

Hundreds of visitors came to get inspired and play with us at our Climate Art Exhibit on Sep. 14-15 at the Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival. Green Change and dozens of volunteers hosted this special exhibit to engage more people to go green and fight climate change. We collaborated with these talented artists to create this featured presentation: Ann Dodge, Tess Felix, Fabrice Florin, Janey Fritsche, Al Grumet, Aurora Mahassine and Randy Rosenberg.
Together, we transformed the redwood grove at Old Mill Park into a creative space for climate action. We inspired hundreds of conversations about climate change through vibrant artworks, visual storytelling, interactive installations and fun activities for all ages. Over a hundred people signed up as Green Change members, dozens pledged to take climate action and many more played our educational games and learned new information to help them go green.
Our climate art exhibit featured:
• Ocean Plastic Portraits - stunning portraits made from recycled materials found on beaches
• Seeds of Change - a multi-dimensional living art installation rising 20 feet up in the redwood trees
• Keeping Score - a fun corn hole game about our food choices
• Hitting Home - an origami house activity about our energy choices
• Alchemy of Fire - mixed-media paintings about the threat of wildfires
• This Island Earth - paintings celebrating the beauty and spiritual power of nature
• Earth Bike - a unique art float created to inspire people to go green
• Green Change - an information table for learning about climate action
This was a fun and rewarding experience for all participants, bringing together hundreds of people and inspiring them to make a green change in their lives. The majestic redwood grove at Old Mill offered an ideal setting for helping each other protect nature and our future.
Special thanks to our gracious hosts Erma Murphy and Sylvia Barsky at MVFAF -- and to all the volunteers who so generously helped us present our work for this transformative experience!

A group of young activists hosted an inspiring Town Hall for a Green New Deal in Fairfax, to demand immediate action on climate change. Students from six different schools in Marin spoke about the impact of global warming, the corrupt billionaires and politicians who enable it, and solutions that match the scale of this crisis, such as the Green New Deal proposal.
This free community event took place at the Women's Club in Fairfax on May 26, 2019. It was organized by members of the Sunrise Movement in Marin, led by Zoe Vavrek (Drake High School), with Charlie de Belloy (Gate Academy), Oona Clark, Marcos Gulati,
Lucy London (Novato High School) and Milo Wetherall (San Domenico School). They were supported by adult allies Charlotte Hamilton, Renee Goddard and many other local activists.
The Green Change team supported their youth movement by taking videos and photos of their event, as well as interviewing some of their members for upcoming video stories. Thanks to crew members Fabrice Florin, Charles Siler, Marilyn Price and Doug Brown for their invaluable support of this important cause. In coming weeks, we will release a special video story featuring these young activists for Climate Heroes, our new series on the new leaders of the green revolution.
These young activists gave thoughtful and heartfelt presentations, and engaged dozens of adult participants and youth to discuss this issue with each other, write postcards and sign up for upcoming rallies. It was a pleasure to join forces with these young leaders to fight for climate action together, across generations! Change is coming.
